MartialWraith Posted February 27 Posted February 27 Hello, Homecoming keeps crashing at random times, usually after no more than about 5 min. of running the game, give or take. My PC is more than capable as I'm running with 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13900KF 3.00 GHz processor (liquid cooled), 64GB DDR5 RAM, and a GIGABYTE RTX 4090 Windforce V2. I have a fresh install of Windows, all drivers installed form manufacturer website, video driver is updated to current. Installation of Homecoming is a fresh install form the Homecoming launcher on a nearly empty SSD, which I've scanned and had no errors. I've run Windows Memory Diagnostic and found no issues, as well as ran a vid card stress test with Furmark for 30 minutes and found no issues. The most recent crash I experienced was with graphics reset using the launcher option. I did bump graphics up to "Quality" using the slider as the only change I made and experienced the crash a little while after that, but not sure if that would be related. I've submitted reports with memdumps every time the crash reporter has popped up. Any suggestions on how to narrow down what's causing the crashes?
Healix Posted February 27 Posted February 27 I will give you the same directions that I was given for correcting any corrupted things in your game, so try this first: Find your HC directory, which is probably under C:/Games/Homecoming; if not, you can open HC Launcher and click the "Screenshots" button. From there, you can navigate to the main folder. Once in the main folder, look for the folders labeled "Accounts", "Architect", "Costumes", "Demos", "Powercust", "Screenshots" and/or "Settings". Depending on what game features you've used or not used, not all of these folders may be present. These folders contain personal data (like costumes, screenshots, and settings, like the folders say) that would be lost if you just delete the directory wholesale, so back up those folders somewhere (like on your desktop or something). You can either copy them or move them, doesn't make a huge difference. Once you've done that, delete everything else. No need for an uninstall wizard or anything like that. Next, download and install a fresh version of HC launcher from here: https://manifest.cohhc.gg/launcher/hcinstall.exe Before you move anything back into your new HC directory, ensure that the game works as it's supposed to. You'll still be able to log in and access your characters. The only things you moved were client-side backups that don't impact the game. Do NOT restore the back ups yet at this point, just check to make sure the game works. If it does, you can move everything you backed up, into the new HC directory, allowing you to restore your binds, access costumes you've saved, etc. If you have also installed the CoH Modder, be sure and add this to the Extra Launch Parameters line: -assetpath assets\mods Hope this fixes it for you like it did for me! Forever grateful to be back in my city!
MartialWraith Posted Wednesday at 05:31 AM Author Posted Wednesday at 05:31 AM Hi Healix, I appreciate the suggestion, however I'm experience the issue (application hang between 30 seconds to a couple of minutes after logging completely into a character) with a completely fresh installation of the game from a fresh download of the Homecoming launcher. Is there any way someone can look at the mem dump file from one of the times the game crashed and the crash reporter launched to see if it will help me narrow down a cause?

You could load it in here to see if anyone can help. Are you having problems with other games crashing? If someone posts a reply quoting me and I don't reply, they may be on ignore. (It seems I'm involved with so much at this point that I may not be able to easily retrieve access to all the notifications) Some players know that I have them on ignore and are likely to make posts knowing that is the case. But the fact that I have them on ignore won't stop some of them from bullying and harassing people, because some of them love to do it. There is a group that have banded together to target forum posters they don't like. They think that this behavior is acceptable. Ignore (in the forums) and /ignore (in-game) are tools to improve your gaming experience. Don't feel bad about using them.
MartialWraith Posted Thursday at 06:15 AM Author Posted Thursday at 06:15 AM (edited) Hi UltraAlt, I just played Starfield for about an hour with no issues. I'll have to test a few other games since the PC format/clean reinstall. I've attached the latest anonymized crash report. The game just crashed while I was fly hovering a short distance away from Atlas/Miss Liberty. Same exact thing when the app hangs/freezes. I'm not actively doing anything in the game. And the time until it freezes/crashes seems to be random. cityofheroes-7z06apm3d55fwd806cybk5ajyg.report Edited Thursday at 06:17 AM by MartialWraith
Marine X Posted Thursday at 09:03 AM Posted Thursday at 09:03 AM (edited) You may want to check your connection to see if anything is going on there. While connected to game server, type in the Chat " /netgraph 1 " without quotes, " /netgraph 0 " turns it off. Even though you can play other games with no issues there may be an issue getting to the Homecoming server due to the path it uses to connect. While it is on ,in the lower right corner of the screen, you will see a series of bars, what these mean is as follows... Interpreting the netgraph: Spike shape: The height of the bar representing server ping time in milliseconds. Short is good, long is bad. Green bars represent received packets. Short = normal/good Long = low bandwidth. Yellow bars represent retransmitted packets. Short = ISP/Router issues Red bars represent dropped packets Short = ISP/Router issues Blocks of Red = Interrupted communications You can also try pinging the server, at a Command Prompt, ( search pc for cmd and it should be in the results ), type the following: " ping 51.161.76.201 -t " without quotes and hit enter. if the response time varies greatly or hangs there is a connection issue. MartialWraith Posted Friday at 12:40 AM Author Posted Friday at 12:40 AM Marine X, you helped me get to the solution!!! All I was seeing was the game freeze and stop working, or crashing but not being able to see anything in the crash logs I could understand to lead me to a conclusion. But when you suggested the netgraph, it made me think about connection stability. So, I started Googling/YouTubing ways to improve internet stability, followed a guide to edit my Ethernet adapter settings in Windows, and was just able to be in game for 25 minutes straight, flying around, using powers, and even changing zones with no freeze, crash, or other noticeable issues. I'll post here again if I have any more consistent issues after this, for the time being this seems to have done the trick! Thanks again to both you and Healix for reaching out to help! 1 1
