  1. The first time I read The Brothers Karamazov I wanted to learn Russian so I could read it in the original language.  Everything from Dostoevsky is amazing.  I dig Piers Anthony as well, but my favorite from him are the Apprentice Adept series.  Hmm, perhaps the Xanth series.  Definitely second Ender's Game.  Probably my favorite Sci-Fi book along with John Steakley's Armor, although Asimov's Foundation is my favorite Sci-Fi series.  I have too many favorite fantasy books to list.   Ok, not true.  One mention is Patrick Rothfuss's Name of the Wind.  Amazing book, but first in a series and I've been waiting a long time for book 3.  Same goes for Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight series.  Great books(all his books are good) but waiting for book four of the series is....frustrating.  I could go on and on.  I read a lot of books.

  2. One side effect of converters I haven't seen mentioned is how Serendipity prices are artificially high as people vie for them in order to make LotG IOs.  The price of those Luck of the Gambler's would definitely be higher with a depleted supply, but what would normally be a really cheap IO set for a newer player is quite expensive.  In fact all defense IO sets are quite expensive.  Obviously expensive is relative.

As for flippers, if you plan ahead and put your own variable lowball bids on most IO sets, they'll fill eventually.  Extra ones you pick up you can flip yourself at a modest profit or tuck away in your SG base.  Heck, I might even supply one of my own forgotten bids as I generally list converted IOs at low prices(every once in a while I'll buy a bunch of cheap recipes on my main, convert and list).

I spent a couple of weeks concentrating on making money, and I continually put in  bids for various IO sets at lowball prices in order to stock my base with attuned IOs.  The little converting I do now simply restocks my base.  And I still have a couple of billion influence between all of my characters.

    on yellow salvage.  I believe it is not trolls. Nearly zero evidence.  Here are the facts i “know”;

     1) a lot (this number has been researched extensively, someone said it and i believed them). Of players do not sell salvage on the market.  They dump it at a vendor to clear their bags.  Except for rare.  And some dump that - okay i hope not.

    2)  The drop rates for uncommon is not huge.

    3) people are crafting more, following my own trend which the good folks of the boards taught me and i encourage anyone to do when the topic of money/converters comes up in help.  My evidence for this is the steadily downward pressure on sales prices on globals and procs the last couple months

Rejoice!  It is the signs of a vibrant player base

I really think the evidence is the opposite of this assessment.  If supply was dwindling you'd expect a gradual decrease in stock with a gradual increase in price.  That hasn't happened with yellow salvage.  Almost over night there were 30k bids on ALL yellow salvage, and the price dramatically increase in a short period of time.  For months I was able to both sell and buy yellow salvage at 2k without issues.  This happened way too fast for a supply problem to crop up.

I was actually about to just post this. We also need to right click from our vault to move to our salvage window. It would be great as well if the max hold-able items per line was 99, instead of just 10, the digits are already there.

Do you mean left click and drag?  Am I missing something again?  Agreed on bigger stacks.  That would be groovy.

@VileTerror  I guess we're both confused then.  I didn't realize you could delete entire stacks(I've never tried) and posters above cleared that up.  I'm obviously confused about the context I quoted as well.  Sorry about that.

They need to let us cancel common salvage, and make it easier to sell off loads of salvage at once. micro-selling all the common/uncommon salvage is such a pain I just usually delete them.

Is it really faster to delete than to /AH, open salvage screen, and drag and list for one influence(or a hundred or whatever)?  Sincerely asking.

Current dark melee is the best at its role.

If you mean it has minor To-HIt Debuff, then yea, sure it's the best at its role.  Other than that, it's a misconception that Dark Melee was ever more than a good single target set at max level with high recharge.  Like any set, Shield helped, and Epics/Patrons could help cover its AOE deficiencies.  Overall, and especially during the leveling process, Dark Melee has always been near the bottom in performance.

Really cool to see Bombardment being added to the game! I am surprised to see that it has the exact same enhancements as Obliteration, though. In the thread where Bombardment was conceived, Leandro encouraged me to differentiate it from Obliteration, and I obliged, but this version is much closer than what I proposed. It still looks like it’ll be a great set though, I’m looking forward to trying it out!

I love the set bonuses, but wish it had a bit more end reduction.  Still, I like it.

Superman is a Invuln/SS tanker who builds a lot for psionic resistance, takes flight as his travel power pool, energy mastery for his ancillary, and cryonic judgement as his judgement. Easy enough.

Great write-up, agree with most of it.  However, Superman frequently had a weakness to mind control in the comics.  His major weaknesses apart from kryptonite and lack of a yellow sun are magic, ionic radiation, and mind control powers.

  10. Looking at the poll, I'm definitely in the minority.  I simply don't like playing evil characters.  The few times I've played Red Side were redemption characters who eventually became heroes.  This has been true for nearly 40 years of gaming beginning with pen and paper DnD.  The same goes for computer games like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and Mass Effect.   I don't have fun playing bad or evil characters.  That said, it HAS been a long time since I ran a redemption character Red Side...…..

Nope.  He's on my ignore list.  For every salient point he has five generalized insults, four acts of hyperbole, three doses of irony, two instances of obtuseness, and can't spell 'their'.   Also, it's escalate.  I'm too friggin' old for that crap.  This will be the last time I mention that fella.

This is probably going to get shouted down, based on the responses people are sharing here . . . but there is another element to the players who aren't "working the market."
They might find it morally repugnant.

Culturally-speaking, that kind of market mechanic has it's appeal for some people, and certainly seems like a large percentage based on responses here.  But some people avoid the market, not because they "don't get it," but because they view it as a microcosmic exemplar for real-world systems which -are- inherently unfair.  Whether that response has roots in accuracy or not doesn't necessarily change how people -feel.-

While I'm sure you can find a few players who fit this description, its far more likely some players simply don't have the time to both play and use the market.  They have jobs and families so they find it much easier to just vendor items to maximize playing time.

There is no origination for this idea. And it is an idea. Specifically, like all things that are related to communication, it will depend on context.

In the current context, the origin is generally attributed to Dungeons and Dragons.

For example, the word "dude" may have numerous meanings and any may be present at any time, depending on situational context. Interestingly, 2 or more contradictory meanings may be present simultaneously and only participants of the current communication channel and cultural medium may fully grasp the nuance. For instance, "dude? Dude! Dewd! Ah, dude," as proclaimed during a sporting event.

Dude!  What are you talking about?!

In order to ascertain a real communal understanding our base understanding should hold the current societal precept as the norm, adapting meaning thereof, situationally.

Being this is a question in a game forum, the current societal precept seems obvious in this situation.

    37 minutes ago, SwitchFade said:

Currently, this base or common understanding has no known origin, being the afore mentioned idea. That idea is one of simple maximization of benefit.

As you say, it depends on the context.

    39 minutes ago, SwitchFade said:

Hence, we find ourselves at a core concept of personal analysis of benefit. Humans make decisions when faced with options. These options have benefit or cost and may have interrelated compromises. We make decisions regarding this, considering self interest when weighing marginal benefit.

This is true.  However, there are few if any real world costs in our current context.  Giving my Barbarian a 3 intelligence probably won't effect anything beyond his skill points and dialogue options

    45 minutes ago, SwitchFade said:

This marginal benefit simply means, "what will I get for that and what will it cost me?" The next logical step is, "to get one more unit of that, how much more do I get and at what cost?"

Now we come to the base premise: we make choices, weighing benefit vs cost, trade offs and decreasing returns. When we perceive that we are receiving no more benefit or are actually losing, we make a different decision.

    Yep!

This is human nature and is the essence of what min/max is. Will I stay up one more hour watching Netflix? Will I get enough sleep and be ok for work tomorrow? When net good is eclipsed by net bad, we stop. Generally.

Some don't care a whit about min/maxing in game terms.  So It's also true that it's human nature NOT to min/max.  Your example isn't the best here as the benefit and cost are rarely a consideration in that context.

    1 hour ago, SwitchFade said:

Now, in game terms, "I'm gonna get most buffawesomesauce... More! MORE! Ok wait, I just got nothin. Damn! I got less! What the...?! I could'a got better if I did that??" Immediately switch to 'that'.

Thus, min/maxing: greatest benefit considering all factors at lowest possible cost.

    Indeed.

All kidding aside, thanks!  It was an interesting read.

Generally speaking, (at least in my experience), it comes from games where you can allocate stat points;  Let's say you wanted to be a mage in D&D - you put your highest stat in intelligence and "dump" your lowest points into things like charisma or strength;  You maximize those aspects of your character that are the most critical to your performance, and minimize those aspects with the least impact.

Another connotation is to simply play up your strengths and minimize your weaknesses;  Perhaps, as a blaster, you take defensive powers to fill in any holes, and slot others to maximize your damage output at the same time.

There are different uses of the term, so a lot depends upon context...

This has always been my interpretation of min/max.  I'd also add any computer game in which you can allocate points towards stats: Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Pillars of Eternity, and Knights of the Old Republic come to mind.  The closest I can think of regarding City of Heroes is taking and/or slotting a power with a set bonus you have no intention of using while skipping or underslotting powers that may be useful in some circumstances.

Also consider using non english words for names. Spanish variants seem popular especially with fire toons.

Agreed.  Many of my characters are Latin derivatives.  I also recommend looking up examples of descriptors, adjectives, adverbs, and even nouns as descriptors (ex. Calamity Jane).  Place names can be cool (ex. Brooklyn Brawler).  Using doctor, agent, Mister, Miss, sister, brother, and other examples before a name can work too.  If I'm still stumped after exploring those options, I've either used a made up name (a couple are random elven names from a DnD site) or a portmanteau.

So, because I respond with what I really think and feel, I am baiting people?

    Really?

I think that the reason player groups (and sometimes server runners) choose to denigrate others is based on Ego, Tribalism, and FUD and that many are using seriously passive aggressive language to do it, many without realizing it because they are just following the herd, full-on cognitave dissonance, IMO.

Whether intentional or not, your posts are riddled with loaded language, most often subjective.  In other words you're doing the exact thing you're accusing others of.  Which makes them react.  Which makes you react.  Which makes them react.  And around and around we go.  I have no idea if that's cognitive dissonance, tribalism, or FUD, but it does explain the stronger reactions to your posts.

As for your substantive arguments, when I realized City of Heroes was playable, I had two choices(that I knew of).  So, the first thing I did was check out the forums.  I chose the Homecoming team because they seemed more organized, had clear goals, advocated a PG-13 atmosphere, and wasn't motivated by greed.   It was an easy choice for me.  Would I like new power choices?  Sure!  But it's not a priority for me.  I have 40 Alts and still have sets I haven't tried.  Stability is more important to me.  An active Dev team with clear and stated goals is more important to me.  If every shard had the same priorities, then I could see shared changes.  Call it ego if you will, but the HC team is under no obligation to share anything with anyone, and I'm ok with that.  If that makes me a lemming in your eyes, then so be it.

It has 2.48% defense to smashing/lethal, 9.75 defense to fire/cold/negative energy/energy, +perception, and defense debuff resistance.  Seems the opposite of useless to me.

In retrospect, my second sentence was unnecessary.  I can see it as being a bit passive-aggressive.  I could just as easily expounded a bit with something like 'It's unfortunate it's typed defense, but that 9.75% is pretty good.  With three slots, Weave, Combat Jumping, and the two Unique defense IOs, it's around 30% defense to Fire/Cold/Energy/Negative Energy which is pretty easy to soft cap with a few IO sets(although the best are a bit expensive).  On my Willpower characters, this allows me to use the other IO sets to concentrate on Smashing/Lethal defense and resistance.'  Or something like that, I wouldn't consider myself a master builder.  Anyway, let's all be friends here.

My first was a Katana/SR scrapper.  The first dozen or so levels were a blur.  My most vivid memory was running through the streets in Steel Canyon.  I looked up at the skyscrapers and saw someone super jumping between the buildings.  I'd never seen anything like it.  Needless to say, my next power choice was super jump.

Alright let's just get rid of IO's in general. Back to SO's and HO's for everyone.

Obviously this post is facetious as is this whole forum thread.

I've actually been thinking of trying to start a TO/DO/SO only static team for a while now.  Perhaps generic level 25 IOs too.
