With that said, unless you have really strong nails, buffing them down to a high shine actually damages the nails, and is generally not recommended.
Also cutting the skin at your cuticles is also not recommended because it can damage the skin. In my case I have such dry cuticles no matter how often I moisturize with nail oil and hand cream that I generally have to cut them off.
I'm not a nail tech, but I know what works for me. Everyone's skin and nails are going to be a little different.
With that said, for even basic colors there's all sorts of things you can do with them. Including if you have them, nail stamping, watermarble, color blocking, or something where each finger is a different color, which is called a Skittle Mani (named after the candy)
