@Voltor, @CaptainLupis, an external firewall could be letting through the ICMP pings but silently blocking the HTTP connections the launcher is trying, but that's a very unlikely configuration.

It's more likely security software or a software firewall on your computers are putting the installer and the launcher in a state where it is silently blocking HTTP (AKA web) connections to manifest.cohhc.gg.  But it lets through connections to cdn.homecomingservers.com.  Likely because has whitelisted HTTP to *.homecomingservers.com due to your browser using it.  (Else none of your reading and posting here would work.)

Absolutely last thing to try.  In your browser, try loading these 3 links, paying very close attention to what happens.

    http://manifest.cohhc.gg/profile/live.json

    http://manifest.cohhc.gg/profile/pre.json

    http://manifest.cohhc.gg/profile/beta.json

In my browser, it downloads them (they're special text), identifies them as .json files, then complains about them because the browser can't handle the security certificate at the start (which HC Launcher requires).

You're looking to see what complains about them, what is blocking them, and how to whitelist the whole website so the HC Launcher can access it.

If those pages load as they did for me with no other software speaking up--or you found what software levers to push to open things up--try running hcinstall.exe again and see if things get farther.

If that doesn't work, then you need to engage someone you know locally who can help you with this issue which is squirrelled away on your computers.  As it is very unlikely I can help you find the problem.

Tried em all in Firefox: got the following response for all 3

SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected non-digit at line 1 column 2 of the JSON data

I've seen strange issues fixed by rebooting and updating, even recently.  May help.

Try the ping test I posted above and see what you get.  Then perhaps move to a PM.

Edited my previous post with the ping

The 7 box I was fixing doesn't have a lot of updates installed vs my gaming 7 box which has virtually every update

So.....when is the next update for the launcher? 🙂

@blueEmpathy, can you reply with the log file launcher.log?  <City file root>\logs\launcher\launcher.log

Like the others, I think the problem is something, security software or firewall, is blocking Internet address manifest.cohhc.gg.  I'd need the log file to be sure.

Okay, well I went into IE and added the site to trusted sites,  I added it as an exception to Malware bytes and my AV, still no luck.  Rebooted, still no luck.

I know it is not my router as the other Win 7 box was connected to it and it ran the launcher.

However that Win 7 box doesn't have all the win 7 updates from MS installed..... I wonder...would any of the Win 7 software updates be a problem? Doesn't seem like it should be.

Am able to ping the site

It's important that when you post a log file or a crash report, you include the file, not quote all or part of it.  It gets hard to figure things out when there's only part of the information.

I've attached the launcher.log file from another test install (completed okay) of the HC Launcher on my computer as an example.

    launcher.log 43.26 kB · 1 download

When you're replying, look down and you'll see a bar at the bottom of the reply box that say's "Drag files here to attach..."  On your computer, drag the log file or crash report to the bar so it's uploaded to the Homecoming forums.  Once it's uploaded, click the "+" at the right end of the bar to insert the file into the body of your reply.

To be sure, I'd need to see all of the log file, but comparing it to mine, the installer is handing off to the launcher, but the launcher can't contact the Homecoming servers to get files for the next steps.

Something is blocking access to those Internet addresses, likely your security software or a firewall, either software or hardware.

I need the whole crash file.  I also need the log file if you can find it.  If the installer gets to the "Accept" screen, it should have written a log file somewhere.  Try searching for "launcher.log" if you can't find it here.

    <City file root>\CityHC\logs\launcher\launcher.log

My previous post was a copy past from the crash folder, here is the launcher.log from my win 7 box

    launcher.log

Here's three things to check.  <City file root> is where you told the installer to put the HC Launcher.

    1.  Log file here in case the HC Launcher is dying in the background before it opens its window.  If you find the log file, post it here.

    <City file root>\CityHC\logs\launcher\launcher.log

    2.  Run the hcinstall.exe again but say "No" to copying files from Tequila.  Then it's only the installer and HC Launcher involved.

    3.  After #2, look for the log file in #1 again, wherever you told the installer in #2 to put the new files.

    4.  What security software do you have?

There's a chance that despite whitelisting the programs, your security software is silently blocking the vital step of hcinstall.exe starting up launcher.exe.

You should have better results with Windows 7 than with Windows XP.  And it is highly unlikely that the presence of Tequila is the root cause of this issue.

Well on my XP box I archived everything and cleaned out the game folder.   Reinstalled launcher, hit approve and nothing, here is the crash log.

So another win 7 box that doesn't belong to me took the launcher no problem and installed and booted the game.   Yet my PC's with Tequila in them keep crashing the launcher before it even launches.  Maybe its not Tequila but I don't know what else the problem is.

Yeah I had tried before as well and it wasn't AV related, as I even tried shutting that down and stopping all its services just to make sure.

I've also tried installs with and without tequila and it didn't make any difference, once I click accept (or reject just for that matter) it just closes and does nothing.

Hm, did you also uninstall the game as well as Tequila?   I'm wondering if maybe Tequila corrupted some CoH files?

  7. 11 minutes ago, Jacke said:

No, you shouldn't have to remove Tequila.  The HC Launcher install is completely independent of Tequila, which is why it goes in a new empty location on you computer.  If the installer detects a Tequila install by looking in the Registry, it will ask if it can copy files from there, stock ones it checks and your own configuration, just to speed things up and give you the same City customization as before.

If this is the same issue you mentioned before, that after clicking "Accept" the install doesn't proceed, then it's likely something to do with the switchover from the installer program to it starting the actual HC Launcher to continue downloading its City install.

Can you whitelist the launcher programs in your security software?  Take a look at the post I wrote just before yours, 2 back from here.

If that doesn't work, try launching the HC Launcher directly yourself.  You should have a desktop link to it.  If that doesn't work, then it's one of these:

    <City file root>\bin\win32\launcher.exe
    <City file root>\bin\win64\launcher.exe

where <City file root> is where you told the installer to put the HC Launcher install.

If you have a 64-bit Windows, try the win64 program.  If you have a 32-bit Windows, or the 64-bit launcher.exe doesn't work, try the win32 program.

Already whitelisted it and have tried many times with the short cuts and actual files to launch, it just closes after hitting accept.

So despite that it should import files from Tequila,  I am going to use my old XP box as a test and remove tequila from it and then reinstall the launcher and see what happens.

  8. While working on a friends Win 7 box that needed some cleansing i decided to test the vid card and went to install CoH,  on a whim I decided to try the beta launcher.   Installed it no problems, and it worked after clicking accept.

This PC did not have Tequila or CoH already on it.

So am I going to have to remove Tequila and reinstall the game on my gaming rig?

I ran the hcinstall.exe and it did it's thing and saw a previous version of Tequila and did the copy thing but now when i click the desktop short cut i get the agreement and Accept/reject buttons but on clicking Accept it does nothing.

    Nothing starts up.

Installed in a new location as per the instructions.

Tried a different different location and nothing.

    agreement window..accept..nothing.

    on win 10 x64

Experiencing this on my Win 7 and Win XP boxes as well   Win 7/64bit

Reinstalled,   made sure Antivirus was not blocking it, nor is my firewall.

  10. I've gotten them on several alts, they can be a challenge due to the fact that player characters since issue 13 in PVP zones are under the "diminishing returns" system which means you will not be at full power like you are in the PVE zones.  Check your combat stats and look at your resistance and defense stats and you will see what I mean.   Meanwhile your targets are L54 and at full power

They spawn in pairs and it is random, you may get the same pair a few times or not. If there is a pattern to induce the spawning of specific characters I have never found it.

4 pillboxes gives the first spawn, defeat them and then take a 5th pillbox for another spawn, defeat them then take a 6th  to reset the zone, or have someone with opposite alignment take a few pill boxes then take them back.

    Some tips:

    1. Don't broadcast that you are going to RV, that is an open invitation for griefers and trolls.  Form your team in Atlas near the entrance or Grandville near the entrance and have everyone go into full hide mode from searches, etc.   Trust me its a good idea to do that.

    2. Some AT/power sets could solo them but if you have a team of 3 or more that would be better

    3. Poison daggers can help a bit, Warburg nukes might make them blink

    4. Lore pets, longbow or banished pantheon, T3 or T4 versions.

    5. Have one of the heavy robots in the zone under control as well. Heavies are slow but tough, they cannot be teleported, nor buffed/healed but the incarnate power incandescence will move them.

    6. Head to the pillbox that they are targeting and take control of its guns in addition to your heavy and lore pets, all pets and guns to aggressive mode and open fire.

    7. A healer/debuffer is recommended.

Separating them can be done if someone with taunt or long range attacks can get the attention of one of them and pull them away.

    They spawn in these pairs:

Black Scorpion and Mako:   Black Scorpion has a taunt, take him down first

Scirocco and Ghost Widow:  Ghost Widow is the far greater threat, take her down fast

With any of those spawns, Lord Recluse could be randomly inserted in place of one of the other AVs.  If he shows up he is target #1.

    The Blue AV's

Positron and Synapse: when you get the alert that heroes are coming, if Synapse isn't there in about 20 seconds then it isn't them. Also Positron can sometimes take some time to arrive so nail synapse first.  For Positron remember he is a walking meltdown.

Manticore and Back Alley Brawler:  though Manti's arrows can be a royal pain,  Bab's fists are a greater pain. Take Bab down first.

Penelope Yin and Ms. Liberty: these are the replacements in the zone for the slain Sister Psyche and Statesman.    Penelope Yin's PSIONIC damage is the far greater threat, take her down FAST.   Also be glad Statesman is gone, I faced him in that zone on live, and he was the greatest threat of all the AVs.

  11. So Tequila opens up and validates the 32 and 64 bit clients with no problem, starts to download files for the beta/test server then errors out.

Luckily it stays open long enough for me to launch the game,

However what can be done to stop it this time, besides installing the new launcher?

There are many ways to make content harder already. This update will not be adding any end-game content or anything "harder."

    1. Stop running paper missions.

    2. Increase your missions to +4x8 and only run 2-3 players.

    3. Use TF settings to buff enemies...debuff yourself...etc - Run 2-3 man TFs with settings to challenge yourself (No I don't mean ITF...there are many more TFs out there that actually push players some)

    4. Don't use incarnate powers outside of incarnate content..

Or just unslot your incarnate powers.

On the retail servers, Paragon typically ran the Halloween event for around 2 weeks.

Last year we ran it for an entire month so that people would have more of a chance to trick or treat or do banner events without feeling rushed to cram it all in.

There were a number of complaints that it being night all the time started to get really old after 3-4 weeks of it. So this year we're splitting the difference and breaking it up, keeping the extended event schedule but not running eternal night for longer than it was on retail.

Makes sense, so another question......about that Energy Melee.....:)

I'll toss my worthless name onto the pyre for this as well.  My main during the Live days was an EM stalker who got saddled with this change just as I hit 50.  I rarely played him after that.  Sure would be nice to remake him and be able to actually play him.

I still used my energy melee alts after the change,  just didn't use energy transfer as much.

Recreated one,  brought it to 50 but have set it aside in the faint hope that HC would revert the power to pre ish 13 whil I work some new character concepts and rebuild my badge hunters

The animation is still in the game, just play a Power Thrusting Energy Manipulation Blaster.

Also Total Focus is in a much worse spot than ET is, with DPA a snudge lower than Bonesmasher.

Yeah i have an energy manipulation blaster so that power is a nice throwback, as to Total Focus, it could use a boost but Energy Transfer was the one power in the set that was wrecked with the ish 13 changes

  16. Also for those that have forgotten what Energy Transfer was like pre ish 13, I suspect a quick scan of youtube will reveal many videos prior to issue 13.

My problem isn't with the entire set, just energy transfer. The rest of the set is quite viable, but the fact that its strongest attack is now so messed up in terms of attack time that it is almost tempting to not take that power.
