  1. Depends on who you ask and there is clearly not an answer to this. It depends.

    My thoughts (only personal opinion)

    Single Target: Ill/Dark

    Aoe: Plant/Storm

Support (even on low level): Plant/Elec

but there are many, many more and it depends on your playstyle. Those that I mentioned fit my playstyle.

I'm just at the point where I legitimately cannot see a use for an all melee damage AT in the game as it stands now.  There is content in the game which requires ranged damage, which makes Scrappers and Stalkers kind of useless unless they're Claws, Kinetics Melee, or have a ranged attack from their ancillary pool.  There is no content in the game which requires melee damage.  Between the Defense Amplifier and Clarion Core Destiny, mez protection is no longer an issue on "squishies."  Blasters do just as much, or more, damage as Scrappers and Stalkers.

I do see a limited use for tanks, but I want one that has very good protection against lethal damage, energy damage, and psionic damage, with full knockback protection and resistance.  As far as I can tell, such a thing does not exist.

I'm going to give a Shield/Energy Melee Tanker a try at some point, but if I don't like that, that will probably be the end of my melee experiment on Homecoming.

As for why I delete characters... my original gameplan was to have: three buffer characters, three debuffer characters, three melee DPS characters, three ranged DPS characters, three tank characters, three Masterminds, three miscellaneous characters, and two farming characters.  Grand total of 23 characters.  I do not want much more than that as I don't see the point nor need for any more characters than that, and it would just get too unwieldy for me.

Now I'm leaning towards three buffer characters, three debuffer characters, six ranged DPS characters, three tank characters, three Masterminds, three miscellaneous characters, and two farming characters.

My Rad/Claws tank has all resists capped at 90%, and Cold is around 70% and Psy 75%, I wouldn't call that a hole. Of course she has not much defenses, but as far as I know she does not have DDR anyway. The rest gets handled with the Absorb Shield and the Heal.

I also have an SD/EM Tank, which is nuts and should not exist. A T9 resist power on top of positional defenses is just crazy. Juggle that with Assasult Melee.... I have around 10 Controllers and 8 Corruptors and I just started rolling melee toons on Homecoming (had some on live) and I enjoy them very much. Maybe just play something else now and come back later? (I mean ATs).

And no AT is really neede in endgame, but none of them are useless either.

Part of it is a kill speed thing.

Squishies are softer targets (generally) so they have to be able to kill fast or lock enemies down.

Tanks are harder targets, but not TRULY unkillable.  Stack enough enemies on for long enough and you're going down.  PERIOD.
So it's a race to kill them before they kill you.

Still need to find a mob, that is killing my SD Tank with all the resists she got stacked on top of the defenses.

  4. I currently see a lot of players that are incarnated but do not have any set boni on them. There are still a lot of casual players out there (you hardly find them here on the forums though) so I assume not all players do use IOs. Heck I had teams where someone mentioned that they do not have anything slotted at all and that wasn't a low level team. So I vote to leave it as it is.

  5. Hi, is this still working? I can't to seem to get it to work. I did create all the files in the City of Heroes folder and restarted the game. I am using the new launcher btw.

Ok, found the problem, it has indeed something to do with the new launcher.

The safest one I have is Dk/Dk.

I would imagine with Dark/Storm I would open with Fearsome then Living Shadows. Run into the middle and pop Heart of Darkness and a Thunder Clap. With Storm I might then run in a quick mini-circle inside the mob with Hurricane with KB-KD so they fall on the floor and get -tohit debuff as well (never tried it with Dark so YMMV). Then back up and repeat. At that point I'd probably throw down a Shadow Field as well. Then beat the hell out of them with your other storm powers.

I assume you would have Steamy Mist slotted for max D.

My only other Dark primary toon besides my Dk/Dk is a Dk/Nature. And what he loses in safety he gains in just sheer overpowering heals and buffs.  So with Storm I imagine it might not be quite as safe as Dk/Dk but it will do more damage.

I made a Fire/Dk and it's the same problem. Not as safe as Dk/Dk but it definitely pumps out more damage.

    Enjoy!

I do that exactly, still if Bosses (especially on Tina's arc) are in the mix, they hit hard when I miss them with FS, or they don't care. Plus, the gameplay might not be for me. FS, LS, running in, HoD, then hop out again. I wish HoD would also be a cone or a targeted AoE like the other stuns.

/Dark is my favorite secondary for Controller and I find it super safe for all primaries. I have a 43 Fire/Dark and she is super safe too, especially because she has a targeted stun instead of pbaoe. I would roll a Dark/Dark but I did only pair /Dark so far with damaging primaries (Ill, Fire and Plant), not sure how the damage is on a Dark/Dark?

  7. Here is the build. I am not good with building so I went with softcapped ranged defense and 216% global recharge speed. I am sure you guys can improve it. It did work out for me though, even with Arachnos on +4/x8 (I usually solo on +2/x8 though for clear speed).

Yeah if you could post that I’d be grateful. I’m at 38 right now and it’s pretty good so far but purple sets at 50 will be fun I’m sure.

I pieced together what I saw of several plant builds and my current knowledge of my several dark builds.

Will do when I am back from work today. Speaking of which, that plant Controller spoiled me, she is just that safe. I would really love if you could give me some tips on how to handle my Dark/Storm Controller. I really have a hard time on her with only Fearsome Stare to open. I hate it how that stun is pbaoe. How do you handle nemesis or hard hitting mobs/Bosses, because of course I tend to miss them mostly with FS. On the plant I can just open with Darkest Night and wait for seeds to recharge (12 secs) to stack it on Nemesis or other mobs that resist it. I am sure there is something I am missing there so any help would be appreciated.

Yep Spectral is way, way better than Flash.

It can stack the fear, continues to apply fears to anything getting close and comes with a hefty -ToHit debuff.

Flash is pbaoe, has crap animation time, takes ages to recharge and doesnt have any secondary debuff attached.

Plus you can't really open with it, even if invis, because you get aggro at the start of the Animation and the hold takes place at the end of the Animation.

  10. Single Target: Ill/Dark

    Aoe: Plant/Dark

/Dark is probably one of the best secondaries for Controllers especially if you want a self heal, no end issues, a bit of def/res and a lot of -tohit, -resistance, -regen.

I have a Plant/Dark and Fire/Dark, but the plant handles +4/x8 Arachnos a lot better, even though the Fire one has softcapped melee.

  11. I went totally different apporach, no Fighting pool, but softcapped range defense and 216% global recharge. She laughs at +4/x8 Arachnos because that's how good seeds is. I can post my build if anyone is interrested. And you want Coercive Persuation in Seeds because Contagious Confusion will almost always also confuse bosses.

Now if I could make my Dark/Storm build work so it would be nearly as enjoyable….

  12. And of course the Vanguardian uses claws when doing melee 🙂

I don't think they look much alike, just find it interresting that they are using those names.

  13. Did you know that Trove has a class ,the Vanguardian (!) that shoots balls and they go all "Freem!" over your screen? You need to have the Paragon of the Past (!) Costume for this towork though. Coincidence? I don't think so, but did not find anything on the net about it. I enjoyed playing the class and had fond memories of CoH while doing so.
