See, they're not yours or anyone else's names. Thinking they are is why we have this problem. You don't own them, you are simply being permitted to use them. And if you're not actively using them there is no reason, other than narcissism and selfishness, that anyone would feel like they are entitled to them.

    I still want your stuff.

  2. Great points @nzer.

The demonstratable truth is that it's actually not hard to come up with a good name.

I've cited several threads in these forums that show that appropriate names and good names are easily available.

I also demonstrated about a couple dozen names I was able to come up with in a few minutes that are all viable good names, without any tricks, without any funky spelling.

There's a lot of moaning I can't get a name. What people actually mean is I can't get a specific name and I can't be bothered to ask for help or trying to come up with something else.

    It's laziness, entitlement, and opportunism.

There's plenty of proof there's no difficulty in getting a good name.

There is every proof that some people don't want the solution.

  3. @Captain Fabulous

If you are having problems coming up with names, I'm more than happy to help. Just ask, and I'll do my best.

As you can see from my previous posts in this thread, it's not hard or time consuming to find names that are sensical and colorful. I was surprised with what I could come up with!

And the are multiple threads and players who both demonstrate that good names are possible, and people are willing to help, much as people get help with costume design. Not everyone had the same talents. I'm always amazed at Player2's costumes, for example. Mine are rather meh.

This is a great community. Just as with quests, the market, costumes, etc  the community shows support for those who need help.

Here's another example thread about good  names are still possible:

  4. "No one is entitled to their [infamy, enhancements, badges, xp, base, SG, merits, prismatics, recipes...]. If you don't actively use it you should lose it if someone else wants it. It's that simple."

I'm game. Sign me up for your stuff when you leave for a while.

  5. Here's some more as of 07:50 PM:

    Venusian Manhunter

    Carbon Steele

    Sacred Scarab

Krimson Krush (could not get Crimson Crush)

    Vegetation

    Ignobled

Battle Shrike (could not get War Shrike)

    Decrepify

    Captain Gemini

Again, took a few minutes, no fancy word tricks, no thesaurus, no foreign words.

But hey, I'm told good names are all gone so we need to pillage them.

  6. Let's see, I think we all know that some names are just not feasible, such as Fire Man and stuff, but here's some reasonable names I came up with that are free on Everlasting:

    Desacratrix

    Liminal Woman

    Grimm Riding Hood

    Captain Vancouver

    Water Weaver

    Good Earth

    Phantastico

    Speed Chaser

    Angel Choir

    Bad Beats

    Mister Strong

    Brother Barometer

    Indivisible Girl

    Magical Trix

    Tidal Mistress

These were free as of 7:40 PM Mountain Time on 1/31/24.

That's literally a 5 minute attempt. No hyphens. No use of capital I for L tricks, no dots, no Xs. I didn't use a thesaurus or even try to use foreign words.

Yes, I did not get Water Man or Tide Girl, but I got Water Weaver.

I could not get Tide Mistress, but with a microsecond of thought and a few ergs of energy I came up with Tidal Mistress, instead. Was that actually hard???

I also want to point out that Player2 routinely comes up with great names and posts them with his costumes in the Post Your Best Costume threat in Art, so somehow they manage to work that out. Likewise, the threat that posts names released to the  public server also exists.

What exactly is the issue? Is this or is this not a game that cultivates the imagination, such as in our costume creator? Are we really running low on names, or are we simply appealing to the lowest common denominator?

People can always ask for help with names, too, if they are stumped.

I'm not seeing a problem folks.

Go use your brain. It's freaking easy to get a name. It just may not be the one attached to someone else's character or your initial attempt. But one can manage around it with satisfaction.

  7. So everyone's commentary has made me think about testing out what it's like to create names. So give me a bit, I'm going to do an experiment and see what names I can come up with and I'll post them and you guys can see what's available at least on Everlasting.

  8. Been here since 2019 when homecoming opened its doors, I can still make characters I can still come up with great names, I may not get the exact name I want, but that's not any different than any other MMO. The amount of entitlement that someone should get whatever they want because someone else isn't around is amazing. No endorsements for laziness.

Coming up with a name isn't that terrible. I've literally created four characters this month and I'm satisfied with their names. There's literally a thread with people advertising names that have been released for use. Why support laziness and entitlement?

That's not a comparison for most.  I have a few names that I want because they're names of my Champions characters, so about 40+ years.  A couple I have, some I don't.  Actually on live, my first main wound up with a totally different name.  I occasionally will see if a name has freed up, but it's not a big deal.   It's a "Hmm, I'd like this character to actually have this name, but in the meantime"

If you're just idled, not using a name, it's not being used.     Gear degrading isn't even being talked about.

Actually, its the same thing. A name is property as much as gear. Moreso. Gear can be replaced. A name cannot. A name is identity. If i'm away for a year and Force Redux is replaced as Generic Name 3430 and someone else is running around as Force Redux, that is an usurpation of identity. I know I don't want to run into Krow or another well known Everlasting personality who just happened to take a break and lose their name to find it is now assigned to some schlub. A name is not just a name, its a reputation and  history as well.

Thankfully my 50s are safe, but for those who are advocating for pillaging and looting 50s, I offer my thoughts on the matter. Come up with a new name. I'm invested in mine, even if I take a break for a long while. FFS, I went back to EQ2 after 10+ years away and my characters all still had their names. WoW, too (over 5 years away).

The name pillagers say to those with invested time/energy in a character and their name 'hey, there's no problem, just come up with a new name'. I say the same for the player looking to make a new character who has no time invested in that character. If it's not such a problem for ME, then surely there's no issue with YOU coming up with your own name as well.

TLDR: Keep those sticky fingers out of my stuff.

  10. I like to think of it this way. Imagine if it wasn't names that were at stake. Imagine if it was your gear such as enchantments and recipes.

What would the argument look like if after a period of inactivity stuff you don't need that your character has equipped goes into a public fund for others to take? How well would that go over? Does the argument of "well you're not using it" still hold water?

My name is as much an investment in an established character as their gear, their base, and everything else.

  11. Solo SG for the most part. I have a few RL friends who log in at the off moment for some RP, but mostly me, myself and I on Everlasting.

I have odd playtimes though, so I mostly PUG. It's social enough, meet fun peeps and have a good time. No different than the end days of Live, after my old VG broke up.

I Star mark folks and create Notes on them when I have a good team so I can tell who's who they are later on. Helps to remember who peeps are.

On occasion, Global Friends and I chat or team up.

I won't join another SG because I want restricted access to my own vaults.

Reading everyone else's responses, I guess I'm not as socially weird as I thought.

  12. I'd suggest Dark Blast/Ninjutsu. Fun sets, good visuals, and they work nicely together.

Dark Blast offers -ToHit to stack with NInjutsu's Defense. Has an exotic damage type most mobs don't resist well. Has solid AOE attacks as well as ST attack chain.

Ninjutsu gets its defense toggles early, compared to Super Reflexes. Has somewhat lower Defense Debuff Resistance (DDR), but you are not a tanker and can avoid more aggro at range vs. the melee ATs, and can likely fly out of reach, so not as important. Ninjutsu also has a heal (so you can skip Siphon Life if you wish), and an Endurance heal, too. It also has a power to slot +global defense uniques if you wish to spend for them later.

It does not cost a lot to make a workable build with this, and with IOs and influence later on, it only gets better. I have one, it's a great combo if you like Dark Blast, which it seems you do.
