Before I start working on a build and post it, I have a dumb question... Is it worth it to take either of the status auras? (Cloak of Fear and Oppressive Gloom) I'm thinking I DON'T need either, but I wanted to get some feedback from you guys first before I get to that point where I have to pick a power. I'm assuming that other things such as leadership might be best... Again though, I'd like to hear what you guys say, then I'll post a build. If there are other skippable powers or any other suggestions, let me know. Soul Transfer looks tempting... but I know I'd need enemies around me for it to work (if memory serves me well, anyway) and generally self rez powers tend to be skipped by most.

 

Anyway, so far I have the first three skills in StJ, the three main armor toggles, and combat jumping at lvl 10. I didn't get Death Shroud since the low levels get hit pretty hard by end consumption, but if you guys think it'd be best to get it sooner rather than later, let me know. I'll probably put the build up in a separate post in this thread.

The last three powers are all nice to have, but all skippable if needed. I skipped them all on my most recent build on my Katana/Dark. My memory is that it’s numerically better to take Death Shroud and attack less if needed, but my memory may be wrong, and it’s less fun just standing there letting your aura do the work. 

 

(Edit: Just checked the numbers. Death Shroud does very slightly better damage per endurance than Initial Strike and Heavy Blow, but it's an AoE. So yes, from an endurance standpoint, take Death Shroud and twiddle your thumbs if necessary. Only Crushing Uppercut does more damage per endurance, and still loses by a mile if there is more than one target.)

 Okay, I cobbled up a build and... MMMM... MMMMMM... Not good looking. There are some power slots that are open, which then gives me freedom to... well, pick more stuff that I probably DO NOT need. That and I tried to go for something close to 40% def smash/lethal, etc.... But I'm at a loss of what to do now. This many toggles is just A LOT of lost endurance. I was tempted to grab Soul Transfer cause, well, concept wise it would make sense. If you think I can squeeze that in get good benefits from getting it slotted, then I'll be happy.

 

Went with Leviathan cause, again, concept, but Soul would fit as well. Though if needed, I'd be cool with Energy Mastery, if only for the Autos. I know this is ridiculous but I'm an RP lame-o that likes things to fit the character, but I ALSO want him to be fun to play, and so far he has been. I got him up to 21 ridiculously fast.

Notes:

  • Maybe drop Focused Accuracy. You have more to-hit than 99% of the game requires. Might be a good way to pick up Oppressive Gloom or Cloak of Fear.
  • Add more or remove some knockback protection. I still occasionally get knocked back at 10 points. I know 12 is good. Not sure about 11.
  • I've not checked if the build has the recharge, but you want to run (Rib Cracker -> Shin Breaker -> Heavy Blow) x 2 -> Crushing Uppercut. A quick eyeball says it's close but I could be wrong. Won't work when Hasten is down. Swapping Crushing Uppercut slotting with another attack may fix it.
  • You can swap in Combat Jumping and Super Jump, but you lose Afterburner as a set mule for recharge. But you could pick up Acrobatics and get rid of some of the knockback slotting. 
  • If you swap in Leviathan mastery, you won't have the endurance for your attack chain as currently slotted. An easy fix is Ageless instead of Barrier, but I think it'll lower survivability. You have survivability to spare, though.
  • I'd want to fiddle until I hit 45% smashing/lethal defense, or possibly 45% melee defense, or both. Less than 1% to go on melee.

Looks pretty nice. It'll be weird to have some of Vill's powers missing, but I think the recharge will cover it.

 

I definitely prefer Leaping, so maybe I'll pick up Acrobatics. I don't like the idea of having more toggles, but I'll take it over having Vill stay on his back. I don't recall what mag protection it has, but it's probably pretty decent. May need to slot in only one KB protection with it at the very least. I'll play with this and (hopefully) figure something out. I'm not the best when it comes to building, but I like to think I'm getting better at it.

So, been playing around with the stuff and I can't seem to get to that sweet spot... Acrobatics provides mag 9 protection against knockback, and with the KB protection from Fury of the Gladiator gives me 12, so good on KB. Resists are REALLY HIGH compared to my defense values. Wasn't able to fit Cloak of Fear/Oppressive Gloom in there. I looked at what would happen if I swapped some slots here and there, but nothing really changed. Getting Melee, smashing, and lethal up is proving to be a difficult venture. My biggest question though is if I really need that many slots in Health. I tried sacrificing slots in there to see if I could get anything good out of that, but the numbers are only INCHES away from from 45%. I sacrificed Energy Mastery to do this, but I don't know if it's really worth it... but I was able to fit in Initial Strike and Sweeping Cross.

 

This is a real workout. 😞

What you have is really quite good. Dropping Energy Mastery unfortunately means that your endurance probably won't be sustainable when fighting full speed, a problem that would only be exacerbated by dropping slots from Health. But if you're willing to be reliant on blues in long fights or to handle debuffs and drains, as most people are, you'll probably be fine. I just wouldn't push it any further by dropping slots from Health or Stamina. 

 

You actually have 15 knockback protection rather than 12, an extra 3 from Gladiator's Armor. We can use that to our advantage. Sweeping Cross doesn't seem to be slotted as an attack, so I'm guessing it's a set mule for the defense. Drop it. Move one slot to Dark Embrace, one to Obsidian Shield. Move the Gladiator's Armor unique to Obsidian Shield, remove the other Gladiator's Armors from Dark Embrace, replace with five Unbreakable Guards. Now your melee defense is 47.2%, smashing/lethal 44.7%, resists are all the same or better, and you have an open power pick. 

 

There may be other worthwhile tradeoffs, but that's the one I noticed. But I'm coming at this from a numbers perspective, not a character concept perspective.

I enjoy concepts, but I like ones that are functional as well... which is why I'll probably frequent the boards for build help.

 

Anyway, I think we got something going here. I put in Spring Attack for the free slot, but I could always change it to something else. I'll miss Sweeping Cross, but I'll deal. I don't think I really need taunt, even if I do team. I'll probably only throw a recharge on Spring Attack, but if you think something else is better for the free slot, let me know. Also, thank you SO MUCH for this input. You have been amazingly helpful and I've learned a lot from this exchange. Maybe I'll be able to get builds right in fewer steps thanks to you. It forced me to look through the IO sets more carefully.

If you really want Sweeping Cross, we can fit it in at no great cost. Taking what I posted, grab all the slots from Tough and the LotG Defense from Maneuvers and put them in Sweeping Cross. Slot all but Damage from the Armageddon set. Slot a Ribosome in Tough. You lose 3.4% smashing/lethal resistance, but gain 6% fire/cold resistance. You lose 1.5% smashing/lethal defense. In return, you get Sweeping Cross and 10% more global recharge. Probably not a bad trade if you enjoy having more attacks, and like Sweeping Cross. Smashing/lethal resistance will still hard cap for a whole minute when you use Barrier, and for the next minute be 88.1%. You should be fine.
