Gravity Control / Time Manipulation - For the Galaxy!

I’ve been playing my Grav/Time Controller character since I discovered the Homecoming servers in early October, a re-creation of the Grav/FF Controller I first created in late Beta way back when.  He’s been 50 for some time now and I’ve completely slotted his Alphas.  I love how he plays.  I can feel his concept as a member of a cosmic law-enforcement team coming through in a satisfying way every time he's in action.

When in groups I try to lead with either Gravity Distortion Field (GDF) or Distortion field, followed by Crushing Field (spammed every couple seconds until the spawn is gone).  Frankly, in most high-level groups a spawn of villains is usually defeated before much control is really possible, so I do what I can and Hold / Propel / Lift stragglers until the room is clear.  On rare occasions I will Wormhole nearby groups to the Tank, but that’s usually in SG groups.  Oh, and I Buff and Heal – almost forgot that part.

Soloing, on larger groups I will often lead off with GDF, Distortion Field, or Wormhole and then hit them repeatedly with Crushing Field until tender, finishing off those Higgs the Singularity hasn’t with  Gravity Distortion --> Propel --> Lift.  Or often I just skip Crusing Field entirely and take them out one-at-a-time - it may even be faster that way.

Groups of three or four Minions or Lieuts. while soloing are easily handled with Grav Distortion --> Time Stop --> Grav Distortion --> TimeStop to control and establish Containment, then finished off with Propel --> Lift --> Grav Distortion on each until down.  Those two hold powers may be my favorite powers of the build - I can handle a lot just by using those two one after another on attackers.

The build itself is a modified version of one published by Ohmslice.  His build can be found here:

It’s Features:
-    Perma Haste, Farsight, Chrono Shift and Indomitable Will.
-    Defense is slightly over the soft cap when Farsight is active (which, again, is Perma)
-    Great Endurance – I rarely run low except when soloing Elite Bosses.  In groups I almost never drop below 75%.
-    Dipping into the Psionic Mastery Pool for Indomitable Will, which not only adds (almost un-necessarily) to Psionic Defense but gives decent Status Protection when I want it.  It’s a bit of a pain that it’s not a toggle, but it’s a worthwhile hassle.  Ohmslice added World of Confusion as well, but I felt that another control power wasn’t necessary.
-    Probably a bit less Franken-slotting than many Controller builds (at least ones I’ve looked at).  It was done in Gravity Distortion and Distortion Field largely for the sake of additional damage.
It wasn’t a cheap build, but I started with less expensive sets and gradually added the Hami-Os and Purple sets as I could.  I will post an earlier “Budget” version below after the finished build.

Possible Changes for the future:
-    The AOE damage from Crushing Field is annoyingly small, and the proc’d Energy Fonts make no noticeable difference in large or small combats.  I have never noticed the stun they produce, probably because most mobs are already held or stunned when the Energy Fonts get to them.  I could reduce the slotting of Crushing Field to 1 or 2 slots, drop Afterburner (which is mainly just a quality of life power), and add a power like Fireball for something more significant AOE-wise.  The con to this is that I’d be losing my Status Defense with Indomitable Will.  I am looking at further Incarnate options to possibly offset this.

This Grav / Time build is different enough from others I have seen that I wanted to share.  I hope that a few of you can get some use out of it.

Thanks, I will look into this once my Gravity/Time guy gets up there. I was looking at the "proc monster" build but I'm unsure how good that is when grouping. It looks nice when you fight solo but I'm not too sure how good it is in groups.

Yeah, there are several proc's going in this build, but it's not built around the whole concept.  I do have ro say that I don't think the Energy Font proc in Superior Overwheming Presence is in any way "overwhelming".  However, putting multiple damage procs into Distortion Field does certainly give it more value.

You want to look at Redlynne's Grav/Time posts for discussions on proc's in Grav/Time.  I've learned a lot in those posts, even if he goes in directions with his builds I chose not to go.  I kind of see him as the genius mad scientist of the Grav/Time controller community, constantly tinkering, getting his aha! moments of inspiration, tinkering even more, then sharing his findings for the world to use and enjoy.  Good stuff.

OK, I'll look into that one, the other from the proc monster build goes a bit too far with the procs I think. As to not having Propel in the build because it's not AS optimal in a proc rotation.. I mean if you're not throwing dumpsters at the enemies with gravity, what are you even doing ?

I looked into that build you mentioned, it has some interesting ideas but it's basically a 0% def 0% resist build. I guess it works for him but I couldn't bring myself to play such a wet noodle 😮 I think I'll stick with yours at least for the time being =D

The reason is ... Wormhole.

If Wormhole transports a $Target, that $Target is almost certainly getting Stunned ... unless it has Stun protection.  And once you've got them Stunned, you can basically take them down before they get a chance to respond, because Wormhole is perma (so you can recast and Stun them again before the Stun duration expires).  And when you're playing City of Statues™ you don't need a whole lot of Defense and Resistance when fighting Underlings/Minions/Lieutenants/Bosses.

However, you apparently missed the Power Boosted Farsight potential for getting perma high Defense.  Farsight is where most of the Defense protection is to be found, so it's NOT a 0% Defense 0% Resistance build.

Verbogeny is one of many pleasurettes afforded a creatific thinkerizer.

I admit I hadn't factored in the power boost which ups the Def to a livable level at 26% according to mids (Yes I know, mids should be taken with a grain of salt) but that doesn't change the fact that it's a near 0% resistance build.
You clearly put a lot of time, effort and care into your build and your guide but I just don't think it's something for me, I really need something more survivable to have a good time because I'll freely admit, I'm a total Controller noob and this guy is pretty much the first one I got above level 30 that I find enjoyable to play. I feel I'm going to be eating so much dirt with a near 0% resist build that I'm going to start being able to tell which part of the city it comes from by taste before long.

The whole point of playing a Controller is winning through lockdown(s), and if you can perma-mez a group so as to deny them (attack) actions then you simply aren't going to be taking a whole lot of damage.

And that's before getting into using Singularity as an aggro magnet to draw alpha strikes.

In other words, there are ways to ... finesse ... the Defense/Resistance stuff in such a way that you either rarely get hit (soloing) or rarely get hit (team with an aggro magnet aside from Singularity).

Or to put it another way, your best defense lies in your control powers.  Can't make it any simpler than that.

Fortunately, Grav/Time has enough flexibility to it that it can adjust to a number of different play styles.  I prefer a more passive defense style with moderate control, while others like Redlynne can more easily find their defense in their "offense" (i.e., control powers) - more of an "active" defense.  I tend to rely primarily on Time's Juncture and my soft-capped Defenses for protection while using Controls to moderate instead of dominate.  I know I don't use Wormhole nearly as much as I could, but it's there if I need it.  Wormhole is good for a whole lot more than porting groups straight up and getting a perverse thrill from seeing it rain enemies (everybody does that, right?).

Neither approach is "wrong" - I think there's a lot of room on the scale between the extremes of Passive and Active defensive styles.  I'm not at either extreme, but I kind of like it somewhere in the middle.

I imagine that the closer one comes to the high end of difficulty, however, the more attractive a multi-tiered defense, an efficient mix of both passive and active defense, might become.  That's what I, personally, want to work toward.

One more thing - Farsight is MUCH easier to perma (or almost perma) than Hasten and Chrono Shift.  If you want to use it as the basis for your passive defenses and don't care so much that the others aren't available all the time, +Recharge becomes less of a priority than I made it.

I messed around with an above build to squeeze Power Boost in (at the cost of a few slots for LOTG). Looks like you're still within Perma-hasten & perma Chronos. So now (in Mids) everything seems capped and as a bonus you get a Resist shield.

Since there was additional recharge wriggle room I turned Propel & Time Stop into proc monsters, along with Slowed Response for some AOE damage. Also changed the Proc in Wormhole into KB2KD because your team will thank you. Removed procs from Distortion Field cos they're crap in there.

You could switch the Lift and Propel slotting if you prefered a quicker proccer. I also moved Hasten up instead of Weave. I just prefer more recharge over a wee bit of extra defenses, especially if you end up exemping for TFs.

I know losing Mez protection from your Epic is a pain in the unmentionables but for endgame you can get Clarion. Or you could try reworking to squeeze the Sorcery pool in somehow for Rune, which works as clicky mez protection.

So if you HAD to get Sorcery in there somehow for the Mez protection I'd probably go with this. You lose a bit of recharge and defense (and Distortion Field!) but get a Ward, Mystic Flight and Rune available about 50% of the time (and the resists it comes with too). You could make up some of the recharge losses by going the Purple in Crushing Field and GDF if you're loaded (I'm not so I only smatter builds with choice Purples)

Carnifax, you have given me a lot to think about.  Primal Forces was part of my original concept for this guy, and it looks like I may be headed back in that direction.  Here are some of the assumptions I had that you demonstrated were incorrect:

 - 5 LotG 7.5% enhancements are a must in this (and about every other) build

 - I need the Leadership Pool in this (and about every other) build

 - I thought I knew how damage proc's work (and now I have a lot of research and reading to do...)

 - Decent Resistance wasn't going to be possible without sacrificing other major elements of the build.

If Magic were part of this character's concept I'd take the Sorcery Pool in a second, but, alas, it's not.  I am starting to re-tool my primary build above to incorporate several of your ideas.  I will make sure to pick up Clarion before I respec out of my current build.  I love the idea of having some layered defenses in addition to all of my Controller tools - sometimes you just can't control everything.

I still think Psi Mastery is a great pool choice for Status Protection (and other things that I didn't take), but at the Incarnate levels there are other options that open up for you.

My preliminary rebuild is about done - I just think it needs a few more tweaks.  I'll post it soon.

Hmm...  I'll give Mystic Flight a test drive on an alt, but at this point I'm pretty invested concept-wise in the Flight pool, mainly due to Hover.

Hold on... if I do drop the Leadership pool like I'm considering I may be able to take Hover from the flight pool AND take the Sorcery pool.  Back to Mids!

To be honest, the only reason I've come up with for my builds to take Hover over Mystic Flight is if I need a place to put the Luck of the Gambler global recharge IO.  If I ... NEED ... to find a 5th slot for that somewhere, I'll take Hover over Mystic Flight, but that's just about the only excuse I'd have for doing so.  If you don't "need" that Luck of the Gambler slotting, then I feel like Mystic Flight is the superior option.  Only other time I'd consider Hover over Mystic Flight would be if I need that last couple +% to reach a defensive softcap, since Hover offers some +Defense while Mystic Flight does not.

Of course, if you're taking an Origin pool other than Sorcery (such as Force of Will or Experimentation) then Mystic Flight wouldn't even be an option and you would be "forced" to take Hover instead of Mystic Flight, since you can pick powers from only ONE Origin pool ... not multiples (kind of like epic/patron pools in that regard, except you can start at Level 4 instead of 35).

Does Mystic Flight fly like Fly or like Hover?  I like the precision, "stop on a dime" feel of Hover, and I use it almost exclusively during missions.  I tend to fly "Overwatch" during battles, hovering over the battle to heal, buff, hold, damage, etc.  Hover is great for that, and the precision means that I have less of a chance of overshooting my destination and getting into trouble.  I will try Mystic Flight on an alt tonight and see what I think.

Fly.

That said, it's perfectly possible to "thrust vector" your way into stopping faster and/or drift slide through corners and so on, and if it's just too frustrating to hit the exact spot you want to fly through you can always teleport past it.  Before Mystic Flight I would ALWAYS take Hover for that "stop on a dime" feeling.  After getting some experience with Mystic Fly and how to "brake" against current movement directions rather than sliding to a stop I can maneuver in a way that is reminiscent of how Hover moves (although it requires a little more manual control from me to achieve).  So there's a little bit of Player Skill involved with being able to use Mystic Fly in close quarters (purple caves, threading the needle through small openings in the sewers maps, etc.) and it's a worthwhile skill to develop since it will also help you with other means of moving to develop those reflexes and sense of judgement for distances and so on.  Heck, I've even gotten better at Ninja Running across rooftops in Cap au Diable on my Arachnos Soldier (who doesn't have Mystic Flight) because of what I learned from needing to control Mystic Flight at a higher skill level on other alts that I'm playing.

At this point I have Mystic Flight on a Tanker, Corruptor, and 2 Controllers.

Conversely, I have Hover on a Defender, Soldier of Arachnos, Peacebringer (natively), and Warshade.

My Mastermind has neither Mystic Flight nor Hover.

So a relatively even balance between the two, and which one goes on which builds depends entirely upon the rest of the build.

Ok, here we go…
I’ve spent many hours over the last several days working and re-working Carnifax’s non-sorcery revision of my build.  I moved several things around, and I added a lot of cost to things by adding Purple IOs and Hami-Os, but since I already have most of those in my current build, it’s not a big deal for me personally.

What I really wanted to do was tweak Resists, Endurance usage and Recharge to see how much I could squeeze out.  I think I did pretty well.  A few comments:

-    I had to steal the 6th enhancement from Temporal Mending in order to add +Range to Propel.  Can’t have Propel without the added range.  Nope.
-    Propel also gained Apocalypse and I moved the Damage Procs to Lift.
-    Crushing Field was changed to Ragnarok
-    I made use of Ribosomes to make Tough and Temp Invulnerability more beefy and Endurance Efficient
-    Added the Shield Wall +5 Resist to Hover
-    The Cytoskeleton Exposures were practically made for Farsight.
-    Added a Lysosome Exposure to Slowed Response to round it out a bit more.
-    I rounded out the major changes by adding Cytoskeletons to Weave

The result:
-    Endurance:  This is a very Endurance-friendly build.  The Endurance drain is 1.15/sec, while +Recovery is 3.74/sec.

-    Defense:  Using Farsight, Defenses are 30+, while with the addition of Power Boost they are soft-capped.  This added to the To-Hit Debuff of Time Juncture and you won’t be getting hit very much.  And, if you DO get hit…

-    Resists:  Smashing / Lethal Resists are capped at 75%, with Fire and Cold at 20%

-    Recharge:  Farsight, Chrono Shift and Hasten are all Perma.  The post I read recently (not sure by whom) that said perma-Power Boost is “easy” to achieve needs to re-evaluate his definition of the word.  I’d pretty much need to start again from scratch and rebuild everything around the concept.

-    Damage:  I was fairly happy with my ability to solo already, and the procs in Time Stop, Lift and Slowed Response are only going to help me in that area, both solo and in groups.

-    Flight:  I was able to keep the Flight pool and still reach some very respectable resist levels.  I love Hover.  You shall not so easily turn me to your Sorcerous Ways, Redlynne!  (It'll have to wait until my next alt.)

I created a second version of this build, almost identical except that I used the Psionic Mastery Epic Pool instead of Primal Forces.  I like how it turned out, even if resists and defenses are lower.  I like the security of potentially always-on Status Protection.  I added Afterburner at the end instead of Maneuvers because, while they both work as a location for a LotG 7.5% ehhancement, Afterburner probably has more value over a very minor Defense increase (and another toggle to carry).  It can be used as a pseudo-Personal Force Field if I get in over my head as well as allow me to beat that lousy scrapper in the group to the next mission.

I will still probably go with the Primal-based build on my next respec, but I think this one has something to offer as well.

Thanks for all the input and suggestions.  I'm just a tinkerer, trial and error sort of guy, but I find the design side of CoH fun in a strange, frustrating sort of way - the changes never end do they?  It's like altitis, but with the same character.

Keep safe all!
