Build help Fire/Storm

Recommended Posts

Need some help to round out this build, haven't seen this combo posted too much here, I figure it might be pretty good none the less.

Constant Knockdowns between Bonfire, Gale and Tornado and some pretty good damage too I think.

Build is most certainly not optimized because I am no Controller expert, still trying to find my first one to bring to level 50 and beyond.

Currently it has perma hasten, S/L def cap, energy resist at 39.3, the rest at 26.4% and some middling resists.

Thanks for the advice !

I don't know that this combo works particularly well. Most notably, Hot Feet and Hurricane are in conflict. While you're not forced to take both powers, the fact is that Fire is a set that encourages being in thick of things while Storm Summoning encourages operating at range.

Some general notes:

  • Dark Watcher's Despair. Any time you're slotting this, you could also spend an additional slot on Dampened Spirits for +3% E/N Resistance. Whether or not this is worthwhile varies from build to build.
  • O2 Boost. This normally isn't take on Controller builds that aren't heavily pet dependent (which Fire is not), unless there is some exceptional slotting value to it.
  • Flashfire. This isn't a particularly good source for damage or a particularly good control ability. Like most long duration click powers in Control sets, it can lockdown minions/lieutenants while not being able to lock down bosses. The long recharge and relatively weak damage means you're not going to get much dps out of it.
  • Bonfire. Force Feedback proc will normally return more than 10% recharge (much less the 6.25% you're getting from Positron's Blast), so it tends to make more sense not to put a 5-slot set into this power.
  • Freezing Rain. This power deals minimal damage and doesn't utilize damage procs very well.
  • Cinders. This has the same issues as Flashfires.
  • Tornado. The raw damage of this power enormously exceeds the value of procs in this power. Until you've already hit ED on Tornado, you shouldn't both with damage procs (Force Feedback and KB -> KD reduction are nearly mandatory).
  • Lightning Storm. This is another power where Force Feedback is almost mandatory.  Damage procs aren't very useful here, but buff/heal procs can be useful because they're virtually guaranteed to go off.

You can also take a different approach and try to deal damage with epic/patron pools (such as Stone) while packing your control powers with Winter sets for defense.

Thanks for the feedback, I made some changes to the set based on your recommendations. I was probably too gung-ho on getting perma haste on paper while not taking into account all the force feedback procs will get me there anyways.

Looking at it all though I now see more clearly how it might not be the best pairing XD and at the price tag this build has gotten, I'm not too sure I want to invest 700mill into a pairing that might not work well. Bottom line here is that I want to make a /storm character, but I'm not very keen on it being Illusion like a lot of the builds I see around since I'm not chasing pylon damage numbers. Earth control was another one I was leaning towards, I'll see what it would look like taking in your tips for /Storm

Earth/Storm should work great. I had one back on Live, and at a time without procs, it was slow to level up until th Storm powers came in, but then took off. Now, with damage a lot more available to Controllers and faster leveling, it should be great. Gravity/Storm is a great combination, also... because converting Tornado and LS from "semi-AoE" powers that hit 1-2 mobs to small but real AoE powers that are hitting their target cap of 5 mobs every time, is a yuge boost in damage.

Here is what I came up with as Earth/Storm. Wasn't too sure what to put for the last powers so I went with the pet from Mace along with Poisonous Ray to help kill big big targets along the way

Nothing wrong with fire/storm...the damage is high and so is the end use. My current (relatively UnIOed) build uses the Stone Epic as you are in melee must of the time. I haven't looked into macros much but there are ones that can drop the targeted pet powers (freezing rain, tornado) at your feet.

Generally I drop bonfire > fire cages (if group is bunched up enough) > run in and smash em with freezing rain, tornado, lightning storm, seismic smash and fissure.

I almost never use flashfire unless you need to control a second group/over aggro and have never needed cinders. YMMV

If you never use Flashfire then it means that you don't need it as a defensive power. Put 4 damage procs in it and it becomes a half-damage nuke, but still usable as an underslotted Stun in an emergency. I think it's about 240 damage with 4 procs, which is solid for such a large area. Although it does suffer from a low base Accuracy. My Earth/Cold is leveling up in the 30s, and with the enemies at +1 or +2 to her, she takes off about 40-50% of their health with what is really the "defensive" opener of Stalagmites.

Basically, look at your powers that are defensive in nature, but can be procced for offense, and say to yourself: "Am I using this as a normal part of the character's defense?"... if you are, then keep it slotted for defense. If not, then proc it for offense, and then you say "Do I need it still usable for defenses as a panic button, or would I be using 3 other powers ahead of it?". If you don't think you'd use it even as a panic button, slot it all the way for damage, otherwise mix 3/3, 2/4, or 4/2 for offense vs defense. In general, all Targeted AoEs have access to 3 damage procs plus a -Res, and if you're willing to use the Controller ATO that does damage, you can put up to 5 offensive procs in a ranged Stun. I think you need at least 1 Acc/Stun just for Accuracy, and probably 2.

I'm not too sure about Stalagmites, I've been playing this gal for a bit yesterday and I found out that you can't use this power for some reason when you are Hovering... I kinda like Hover so I'm probably just going to drop this and add those slots somewhere else

Here is what I got when I took out Stalagmites, I changed up Poisonous Ray for Disruptor Blast and added in SS

Heh, well, you stomp your foot on the ground and cause stalagmites to rise up. I don't know if airstomping has the same effect 😄

I know, still a bit silly though that it has that restriction. I mean I can cause an earthquake while hovering soooo
