Read through other people builds, cherry-picked what sounds nice, but most likely can be better.

Not sure of the goals here - as some times you go for melee defense but other times you don't - sometimes you got for resistance, but skip Shield wall.

 

Without changing the powers too much - except for Tactics out for Vengeance - here's a ranged defense soft capped version. It's also a hell of a lot cheaper. I'm assuming you want to stay at range since you skip the melee powers (like FSC/Consume) except for Burn.

 

Please note - I didn't remove hot feet, but I don't like or use it and have no clue how to slot it. So do what you will with that lol

Originally, I want to be self-sufficient in combat, so added def and res along with my main focus on damage. I did forget about melee/range defense, though ideally, I rather keep my distance, so should focus more on range defense.

 

It was either Burn and Assault or Char or Melt, thought Burn might be nice because of the Immobilize (Res), though that's very situational. Char and Melt are ST, not sure how useful they would be. If I forgo one of the PBAOE (B or HF), and pick a ST, what are your suggestions?

 

Vengeance

 

Is the Global Recharge Speed is in effect regardless I'm using Vengeance skill?

 

It's also a hell of a lot cheaper

 

TBH, I have no idea which is expensive or cheap.

- So burn is a must take - it has incredible damage potential if you stuff it full of the PBAoE procs, it's my favourite power in a Fire/Fire (so I'd keep this over hot feet, although I'd try to find room for both)

- LotG Proc in Veng give +7.5% rech all the time, regardless of whether used or not.

- For Defense, it's best to try and softcap (reach 45%) on at least one or more types. S/L is commonly done as a lot of attacks have a S/L element, or a positional e.g. ranged.

Purples and Winter sets are 20m-30m (you can boost the cheaper winter sets instead of paying 30). The others are 500-1.5M (the yellow sets)

First you can't use afterburner and engage enemies in combat. With it turned off you are at around 33% ranged def. Maybe that's enough for you, but I have a feeling afterburner may have distorted your build and your focus, speaking of which,

 

When I look at the build it lacks focus. You already made it very clear what your strategy is with your exclusion of all melee range powers and the inclusion of hover and bonfire. So if you are forcing all the attacks that come your way to have a ranged component and you are building up your ranged defense then why this:

Melee defense, Aoe defense, and other typed defenses contribute minimally to your overall game plan which is keeping stuff at range, and you shore up your survival by building up your ranged defense. There are sets for those power picks that do support your game plan such as trap of the hunter or even another set of thunderstrikes in ring of fire, a full set of artillery in rain of fire, Sting of the manticore or executioner's contract in blazing bolt, eradication in inferno and even reactive armor in fire shield. Those options are all cheaper combined than the two full winter sets you tossed in Rain of Fire and Inferno. If you add the ranged defense bonus from those alternatives I suggested you can probably also get rid of the gladiator's armor PVP set, which is also expensive, and reduce the number of slots for tough so you can use those slots elsewhere.

 

Here is a thread that I posted in that walks you through how you approach a build. It defines a set of goals and I walk the reader through how to evaluate each power and set options to attain those goals. Be sure to read the entire thread for context. The only thing I'll add to that thread is that you always have a primary goal that trumps all else. For you it might be getting ranged defense to the softcap which is 45%, always make sure you reach your primary goal before divesting your slotting to attain your other goals.

I'll try to help, again using your build.

 

But I'll help explain some more so maybe it will make a little more sense.

 

1. Our main goal here is Ranged defense. You don't plan on being in melee, you don't have any melee except burn. We're going to forego that as a defense.

2. Ring of fire is being used primarily for the IO passives it is giving us - that being said, it does work with BURN to keep them in it. We also don't care about how long immobilizes, so we went the Thunderstrike route for damage instead of Immobilize.

3. The winter sets are great when you use them for specific bonuses, but just because they're a different color doesn't make them stronger - and they're expensive.

4. We're going to get sets that are focused on RANGED DEF first and foremost. We're also going to go for an assumption that we don't have an incarnate yet, which requires us to slot a little more in defense than we might otherwise have to.

5. Stuffing slots into defensives for very little benefit isn't going to get you to where you need to be. So we're going to move those around, probably to Burn.

6. We're going to address your concern (since I'm not sure how good cauterizing aura is at helping end) by adding some of those slots to Health for some extra Recovery -- and we'll add a chance for heal to Stamina to give a little more health, too, while we're at it. Again, incarnates can be used to help if it is a problem.

7. We're going to move blaster ATO into inferno, because it's pbaoe so has mostly Melee defense bonuses - and we want ranged.

8. We're going to then use the ranged Winter set in blaze x5 because that will give us some ranged defense. Note - you can 6slot Thunderstrike here instead and it'll be cheaper

9. We're going to shift over Blazing bolt to sting of the manticore because A) it gives us ranged defense without 6 slots and B) it gives us 7.5% recharge

10. I'm trying to work within the confines of the powers you are choosing, as I am assuming you are choosing them for your own playstyle. That being said, I did change Melt armor to Burn -- because I just don't see Melt Armor doing much for you as a Blaster.

Without changing the powers too much - except for Tactics out for Vengeance - here's a ranged defense soft capped version. It's also a hell of a lot cheaper. I'm assuming you want to stay at range since you skip the melee powers (like FSC/Consume) except for Burn.

 

Please note - I didn't remove hot feet, but I don't like or use it and have no clue how to slot it. So do what you will with that lol

If a Lethal Attack is RANGED, and your RANGED is higher than your LETHAL, then your RANGED defense will be used in place of your lethal for determining if they hit or not. Same for smashing.

Interesting, I didn't know that. Just for my info:

- does Melee/Range supersede Energy/Neg/Ps/Fire/Cold if higher as well?

- is that the same for AoE, where if it's higher, it's used instead of the S/L?

It works that way with everything - if ranged is your highest, any attack that’s flagged as RANGED will use that defense. Hence why we can avoid melee all together, since you won’t be in melee to ever need it. There are some attacks that are not positional- these ones will go through ranged, but they’re not common.

 

 

burn is chosen because it’s a beast. You can put anything there really, but melt armor is just really weak on blasters due to their debuff modifiers.

When I go to arrange slots I get this:

Afterwards it shows the problem.  You have Burn taken at L49 and you have 5 slots in it.

L49: Last power (1 slot)
L50: 3 slots

OOPS!

 

This is why I did a manual rebuild, taking the powers in an orderly, level-up order.  Just to be safe.

Basically, Afterburner can function as an "Oh Crap" button in the event you get badly Defense Debuffed.

In a team setting you should be fine.  You should have someone dragging aggro off you.
And team buffs should boost your Defenses and Resists.

Basically Defense comes in two varieties.

1: Typed (Smashing, Lethal, Energy, Negative, Fire, Cold, Psi)
2: Vectored (Melee, Ranged, AoE)

Most incoming attacks have flags for both Typed AND Vectored damage.
Very VERY few are "Pure X".

And the way Defense works, the game uses the highest applicable value.

So if you have Smashing/Ranged damage.
Your S/L Defense is 0% and your Ranged Defense is 25%, it'll use your Ranged Defense.
If you get Energy/PBAoE damage.
Your Energy Defense is 30% and your PBAoE is 22%, it'll use your Energy Defense
And yes, if it throws a damage combo that you have NO Typed OR Vectored Defense to?  You're hating life and hoping you have some Resistance.

You know, I'm not sure I know what you're referring to anymore.

What Slows?

 

If you're talking about about the first build, those weren't put in there for the slow. But I also clearly stated I don't like hotfeet - and the op didn't plan on standing around for hot feet to do damage.
