TC Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 This has probably been posted before but I couldn't find the suggestion, so here it is. Pretty straight forward, I just want more description space. I'm not an RPer but I like stories and fleshing out my character's background is fun. I find the amount of space allowed for a description somewhat restricting. It's currently capped at 1023 characters and I think 2046 (doubled) would be enough to do what I want to do with my character's backgrounds. There may be some technical limitation that I'm unaware of here but I doubt it's server space as another 1023 characters of text is a few KBs, at most. 7 1
ImpousVileTerror Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 Heh, it was actually asked for (again) not too long ago, but your title is much more to-the-point and clear. Here's that previous thread: https://forums.homecomingservers.com/topic/20654-from-humble-origins-to-greatness/ 2 1

Here's that previous thread: https://forums.homecomingservers.com/topic/20654-from-humble-origins-to-greatness/ Thanks, I'm not super familiar with the rules here: is my thread okay to keep up? Or would it get closed as a duplicate topic? 1
ImpousVileTerror Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 There aren't any true rules in regard to that, just various forms of etiquette which different users have. Some people are absolutely appalled at the possibility of multiple threads on the same topic, but they tend to be in a minority. Most folks will just look at this thread, nod/shake-their-head, and move on to the next one. Don't worry about it! Feel free to speak about this topic in any appropriate thread. Just bear in mind that continuous posts repeating the same thing over and over tend to be frowned upon, and if they're done with clearly malicious intent, a GM/Mod is liable to lock and/or hide/delete the duplicate threads. Also, don't "necro" multiple threads on the same subject. That's particularly bad form in most people's opinion. The short version: Feel free to be relaxed. It's not the end of the world to post the same suggestion within two weeks of a different user doing so. It just happens some times. 2 1

My programmer nitpick is that doubling the space is 2047 characters, not 2046. Going from 2^10 - 1 to 2^11 - 1 — one more bit in the maximum array index. 2
MTeague Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 I can pretty much guarantee my characters backstories will all expand to consume as much space as I am given. Whether that is 1023 or 2046 or 20,000 or 40,000. So if the limit is expanded by a LOT... it might make sense to leave the existing field in place as a "summary/synopsis" and then a "read more" button to get to the meat and potatoes, so people aren't loading up War and Peace if you inspect a random stranger. 1 Roster: MTeague's characters: The Good, The Bad, and The Gold

I don't know what it is, but I love inspecting players and when characters have a story it makes the world feel so much more alive. It's disappointing when I find a really good story but I can tell the writer was cut short by the limit. Edited July 16, 2020 by TC 3
Chrome Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 i personally have a hard time coming up with good stories for mine but when i do i hate it when i have to alter words or "forget" a space to fit in the last word of my story...really sad 2 1
