Controller or Dominator?

Hi folks,

 

I'm trying to decide between a Fire/Dark Controller or Fire/Fire Dominator. This char will be strictly for solo leveling and maybe doing raids at 50. Which one am I better off with?

Fiery Assault is very late blooming, you don't get blaze or blazing bolt going until your late 30s (fully slotted blaze @ lvl 40). Fire control for controllers can also be pretty endurance heavy while leveling if you're running hot feet (dominators rely on the damage from hot feet less). Twilight Grasp is a great self heal, but otherwise I wouldn't rec either for a solo leveling project.

Pros and cons are pretty equal imo. Fire/Dark will be an easier, safer class to solo but much slower at first. At 50 I built mine and solo'd 2 AVs at the same time, lvl 52s. On raid teams the control set is pretty much no benefit.

 

This will be the same for control on dom for raiding. However a buddy and I running x2 dominators would perma hold some hard encounters (don't have a list of which mobs this is/nt possible on). 

 

Fire/fire dom is gonna feel squishy as hell before defenses and the mighty perma dom come into play. You'll do well when you're the first to attack but ambush or accidental pulls can be more hazardess if your AoE trolls aren't up.

 

If I had to choose just one. I'd choose dom. If you can manage a perma dom build that also can exempt (if you plan on going back for missed content/replay) having mez protection on a blapper-trol just feels amazing. Much more patience to play however:

 

My fire/dark trol runs +4/x8 pretty much all mob types at level 50. Slower, easy, and imo boring.

 

Dom struggles with arachnos due to heavy trol resistance bosses but can make manage. Otherwise I can't get over being a blaster-scrapper-controller feel.

These are two very different characters. On balance I'd say Fire/Dark Controller is better overall, even if not necessarily better at the same things. However, the Fire/Fire may be the better soloist.

 

Fire/Fire Dom isn't terrible. A saving grace of Fiery Assault is Consume, which helps a lot with the high endurance cost of Hot Feet and Dominator life in general. 

 

Before committing to a Dom though I'd have a look at /Fire Manipulation Blasters. They aren't exactly the same as Fire Doms but they share Hot Feet and can access Bonfire. I have a Water/Fire Blaster and Fire/Ice Dominator. The Blaster has a struggle here and there but is overall leagues better than the Dominator. Fire/Fire would handle a bit better than Fire/Icy but still give Blasters a look to see if that's closer to what you want.

On the other hand, Dark/Fire Dominator is top tier if you're open to that swap.
