BR/Rad Build for newb shooty types.

Decided to try my hand at a sentinal, and have been having a ton of fun so far. Started with one character concept, but ended up going full iron man. Anyways. I stole someone elses radiation secondary build, tweaked it so I had enough room for Beam's attacks, and then juggles some slots around so I had enough of this an that to get crazy fast attacks. My fear is I'm going to be very low on defenses.... Anyone have thoughts on that? I'm new to the ranged attack scene.

Alright. I'm 30, now. And still enjoying the setup. But I figured I'd take another go at it. I was able to get most of my important defenses up to around 30%, with most of my health and endurance remaining the same. My over all endurance reduction came way down, (10% originally, down to 3.8%.)

As a ranged character, what kind of defense totals am I looking for? Are there any magic numbers for these things? Can I spare myself 3 powers from the fighting tree? What kind of epic pools are good, here? I can't get the body pool like I would for my melee guys... :/ Any feedback, even a "Yeah, looks pretty good", would be useful to me.

I got a beam rifle/Radiation guy at level 18. Been playing my pistols/willpower, trying to get one character leveled up after trying way too many. Still only level 36 on that one. But the BR/Rad is going to get some love before long. I am an idiot with all this new stuff and can't help with a build. But I love Sentinels. I know a lot of people are down on them, but I don't care. I'm having fun.

Okay, back again with another revision. My defenses are down to about 20%, but all of my resistances are up to ~60%. Offensive capabilities are around the same. Thinking about cutting the second basic attack, but doing so gets rid of the "defensive opportunity" as an option... I should probably keep that on the table. :/

No problem. I'm on everlasting, so no meet-ups. :P Let me know how it goes, and what your build ends up looking like. It's not by any means perfect, but I've been beating my face against it for a while now and thought some conversation about it would be helpful.

I feel like I want to take one more pass at it, and aim for 32% positionals... It might not be in the cards, just cuz Bio is weird, but, I've seen some pretty squishy builds hit the 45%. I feel like there's secrets that I'm missing, you know? How to make weave and maneuvers, and combat jumping just work.

I'm glad you found this helpful though! Have fun! I find Incinerate, Charged Shot (to try and spread), Cutting beam or refractor beam to open up defenses, then lancer and piercing to put the hurt usually helps. I usually fill with charged shot to keep single shot open for when Opportunity Procs (see what I did there?), to unlock offensive opportunity. I would guess soloing you might want to defensive bonus (or if you're shy on heals, which is hard to believe as a /rad).

Anyhoo. Your results may vary. I'd love to hear about them. :P

This kind of thread is a great resource for those of us who have no idea what's going on with the IO sets. A couple of stupid questions. Is this like a really expensive build that you shoot for at some point in the future ? Or is this pretty achievable? I have about 100 million to work with from leveling up my farm brute, and can obviously farm more, but some perspective would be nice.

Also, if it is the expensive version, is there a cheaper version you use to get by while you work toward this?

Got back to my Beam/Rad this weekend and I'm really enjoying it, especially now that I got some generic IOs slotted. Although I would pay good money for an alternate sound pack for beam rifle. But I'm getting used to it and it is kinda starting to grow on me, a little ... kinda.

Another also: from my memory, hover used to be slow as molasses unless you slotted some speed into it. Did that change? Or is that built into your build in some way I'm not seeing? I've always been a superjump kinda guy, and was kinda thinking about skipping a travel power entirely, but hover might be fun for avoiding melee damage, at least on the maps where you can actually hover.  And flight is convenient.

I haven't achieved this. I imagine with multiple purples it will be astoundingly expensive. I would probably go power by power, getting them set by set, and farming, or buying the pieces. Using either AE farm, or Merit Farming and selling enh you don't need for ones you do.

Hover is still slow, yeah. It's like combat jumping. Not speeding your speed, but to increase defense. Though you can slot flight speed into swift in the free fitness slots.

I am 26 and still have yet to get hover... currently using fly, 4 rad armor toggles, and assault, along with my heal on auto-use and I've experienced very little end loss...

So far I open up with disintegrate on my main target, followed by lance to spread it, then pop back to cutting beam, .. bounce between the first ppl attacks until disintegrate recharges then rinse and repeat. I just unlocked refractory last night so we'll see how that fits in, but so far the play has been beastly.. only got in over my head once.

In addition, another individual I met on Reddit and I are doing a supergroup on Indomitable called F.R.E.E.M. that accepts only BR users of any type.. we've done a cpl teamups so far to maximize the disintegrate spread and it is crazy fun.

Once I figure out a bit more and get some stuff slotted I'll post back to let ya know how things are going!

Hover was originally glacially slow but they gave it a speed increase in issue 8; I use it frequently and find that it's totally fast enough to offer maneuverability during combat

Yeah, I gave hover a shot, and it is much faster than I remembered. I'm sure I played after issue 8 but I had moved on to superjump by then. On another note, I now have a beam/devices blaster as well as this guy, and I gotta tell you, that sumbitch is a nail driver. It's actually easier to solo because I kill stuff so fast. I cranked up the difficulty higher than I ever could with my Sentinel, at least that's true through the 20s. Stuff just melts. I'm kinda getting why people are down on Sentinels. Unless I'm fighting mez heavy mobs, it's not even a contest.

It's not awesome at grouping because of lack of aoe on the blaster, so the mobs better be dark purple or you're always hunting for a target with enough health to be worth shooting as all the other aoe in the group takes out the minions and even a lot of lieutenants so fast your single shots seem pointless a lot of the time. But you can melt a boss like nobodies business. It's not awful, you definitely are knocking out some dps, but group play really lends itself to aoe more. I play my pistols blaster in groups more for the better aoe.

Swift is also baseline now.
