gneppa
Whenever I run City of Heroes on my laptop I get random moments of lag. Sometimes to the point that I d/c. For example, when I do DFB I don’t lag until I get to the 2nd map. At that point I’m probably running like 4fps.. I tried switching all the settings to minimum but I still have problems.. could it be my internet? Or my laptop?
dmaker
In the game options, near the bottom of the choices, you can bind keys to show framerates and network performance. I would suggest enabling both of those and running them while playing. If your framerate gets really low, but your ping is otherwise consistent, then it is most likely your gpu unable to keep up with your current activities. Also, if your gpu supports something like Riva, you can display statistics like framerate, but also gpu temps in an on screen display while playing as well. If your gpu overheats, it will slow to a crawl.

Having run CoH back in the day on a 756k DSL line with lag only during events like the Rikiti Invasion I can, with almost 100% confidence, tell you it isn't your network/internet unless you are on dial-up or running an LTE service with throttling or poor LoS. Diagnosing the other side requires more info. Open your start>run/search and type dxdiag and run it. Select save all information and attach the text file here and I'll take a look at it. I learned that with a large group my fps still stayed between 50-80fps but my ping stretched from 230 to above 3000ping... it was brutal
dmaker
Your framerates are really good, especially in a crowded area, but a 3000 ping is really bad. Is that the only time your ping goes that high, in a crowded area? What type of Internet connection do you have?
goblinite
Ping extending out like that at the same time a lot of people are in the area would indicate the server is having issues. A connection only runs at the speed of the slowest point in the line. If the server is responding to too many requests it can't respond to all of them in a timely fashion and becomes a bottleneck. Asteria
Sounds like the issue I am having. My FPS is 18-25 during RWZ raids but drops down to 4 below during certain parts of the sewers and atlas park. I’ll run some tests and post. May have something to do with me having windows 10 and intel integrated graphics

The servers are just swamped constantly. And until more folks are willing to move over to practically empty Reunion we aren't going to get any more new shards.
