I think this really just boils down to being another "my way of playing the game is the right way" thread.

So I think we need  to remember the history of the badge system. At the time it was introduced it was something of a game changer for mmorpgs.

 

Non-combat rewards was just becoming a thing and the CoH was one of the first to implement this type of system. There have been gaming journalist write whole articles about what the introduction of the badge system meant to mmos. 

I wish I could find more but my search-fu is weak today. I remember reading articles about this back then. One in particular was with Jack talking about who come up with the idea and system and how they knew it was gonna be a game changer.
