Dark/Savage Build Critique Request

Crasical

Recommended Posts

I've been staring at this for hours and I don't even know if it makes sense anymore.

Idea is to approach in stealth, hit with Fearsome Stare/possibly Unkindness, then Feral Charge in, drop Heart of Darkness, and then get to work in melee, dropping Shadowy Field if necessary.

Dark Consumption and Soul Drain in the middle of the pack, stacked Dark Embrace and Toughness (I couldn't get any real meaningful defense with all the +rech).
Possess is just really handy for corner cases and early leveling tool.
Infiltration really slotted because it's got my def mules for +rech and -KB and and extra resistance and stuff.

Hi there, nice work on a first build. I have some suggestions, but this is a pretty good start.

(By the way, to get more responses, its often helpful when you post builds to also take a screenshot of the build with the Totals tab showing, and paste it into your post, so people can glance at it without having to load it. I'm going to post your original below for reference for other posters:)

image.thumb.png.9a80035d91cf4fd2405e0adc8b36ce77.png

Some good things I have to say about the build:

  • This doesn't look crazy expensive. Other than the Dominator ATO most of these sets are very affordable.
  • Appears to be permadom.
  • For the most part, the power choices are reasonable.

A few things that strike me I'd suggest adjusting:

  • I don't recommend skipping Call Hawk unless the look of it conflicts with your build. It's a fantastic attack,
  • I'd drop Maiming Slash, because of its lower DPA than other attacks in the set. It's a fine attack, you just probably won't use it that often. Disregard if for some reason you do.
  • I don't generally recommend not having at least one immobilize power, even if all you do is drop a single Accuracy in it. You can absolutely do it if you must, but its a balance decision. Being capable of  quickly immobilizing archvillains is a basic expectation most teams will have of the team Dominator. That said, I do have Doms where I skipped it (or where one just isn't available). Just as long as you're doing that as a conscious choice.
  • I don't generally recommend skipping the blast from the APP set, unless it's a very poor one. Dark Obliteration is pretty great and worth taking.
  • Rending Flurry is a divisive power. Some like it, some don't. I personally skip it. It's fine to take if you actually use it.
  • You took Grant Invisibility for the LoTG slot, but could grab Weave, which you already qualify for from having Tough. So for sure grab that. 🙂

Below I'm not going to suggest a complete rebuild, but steps you might take to start filling in gaps in Defense which I think you are capable of picking up in the final version of the build.

To show you my thinking on a suggested rebuild, I'll start with a skeletal model showing baseline defenses and slotting. I'm making some assumptions about powers to drop or keep, but you can get the big idea. I've tried to map out where I want each of my critical procs or single slot bonuses to go before I start slotting the build.

Starting out, I can see I'm starting around 15% Defense to most vectors, which isn't bad for a non-Psi APP Dominator.

My critical procs are

  • Dominator +Damage ATO: We want this somewhere we can proc it a lot. There's a lot of possibilities. The proc can stack, so keeping it somewhere it will cycle a lot is good. This set also provides a tremendous +5 Range defense bonus for 6 slots. I put it in Heart of Darkness but there's good reason it might belong somewhere else depending on your faith in being able to proc it. Other good locations, depending on what you tend to cycle, are Dark Grasp or Fearsome Stare.*
    • ( *Or Feral Charge, but verify it will actually accept the proc in game)
  • Steadfast Resist and Gladiator's Armor +3% defense: Together these add +6% to the build. We almost never want to skip these on any build. I put them in Tough.
  • Luck of the Gamblers: I ID'ed 3 spots: Stealth, Weave, and Hover. You could replace Hover with Maneuvers or Combat Jumping. I took Hover just because of how useful it is to be able to Hover up to cast a cone and then Feral Charge back in.
  • Unkindness: Has slottable -Defense, so we don't want to miss a -Resist proc here.
  • Spot Prey: Has enhanceable +ToHit, so we don't want to miss a free Build Up for an extra +68% damage from Gaussian's proc.
  • Feral Charge can take Force Feedback chance for +100% Recharge proc. You'll be casting this power a lot, so its probably worth taking the proc. This is turn will pull your control powers back up more often.

The next piece is finding a path to enough Recharge to become permadom. To do this, I like to take an interim step slotting only the things that provide a combo of Recharge along with Defense. This build I can get to 35.2% Ranged Defense and 70% Recharge with combinations of Basilisk's Gaze, the ATO set, Coercive Persuasion, Expedient Reinforcement, and Cloud Senses, which truly isn't bad for a set without a Snipe.

From here, you'd start filling in with your power picks like before. You'll need to decide how much Defense you want to end up with versus procs. In the end you should be able to start with something pretty solid though.

You also have the option BTW of moving the Dominator ATO proc into Feral Charge. That will  likely mean losing the +10 Recharge and +5 Defense combo this ATO provides so is always a tough choice.

Hope this is helpful. 🙂

Have this combo and it's very fun but I built mine slightly different, wanted to go with soul epic but went with mace mastery for scorpion shield to get me soft capped. Couldn't fit in Shadow Field as I took several of the savage attacks to fit the theme I had going.

Hi there, nice work on a first build. I have some suggestions, but this is a pretty good start.

Thank you kindly, and sorry for the long delay, the forum didn't pop up anything to say this had gotten any views, so I missed your analysis.

Thanks also for the kind words on it. Now, as to your suggestions:

You're correct about Call Hawk, and probably correct about the immobs and Obliteration. The problem is that the build's pretty tight at the moment, so we're definitely operating on one-in-one-out system. I'd *LIKE* to grab those powers, but what would I drop to replace them? I do actually quite like Rending Flurry, and Maiming Slash is in there for leveling purposes. It's sorta the same deal as my blaster, I have both Single Shot and charged Shot and while I don't *use* them much at 50, they get niche use as being fired off during mezzes due to Defiance, and they helped me have an attack chain from low levels, and they'll be important if I ever need to exemplar back down.

You've got an excellent call on Weave instead of Grant Invis. I had thought that it would be good to let allies sneak around with me, but more defense for my fragile self is probably not unwise. Which leads to further jiggery: I can move a slot out of Tough to Weave, and turn Tough into a mule for the defense uniques and end up with +12% global defense for a loss of about 6% resistance to smashing/lethal, which is a pretty good trade.

as for the dominator ATO: Yeah, could do. I'd have to buy one extra ATO but putting it in Fearsome Stare is not a bad call.
I don't have Feral Charge yet, Hain is about 36, but at present I open (From stealth) with possess on any NPC or target I think is going to be trouble, followed by fearsome stare. Optionally, drop Haunt or Unkindness at this point to either mitigate aggro or start dealing damage, then jump in and fire off Heart of Darkness or Shadow Field if it's on cooldown, and then start meleeing with Maiming, Vicious, and Rending Flurry. Repositioning from within the mob to drop more Unkindness if the density is thick enough. Once I have Feral Charge, it's going to replace manually running into the mob packs.

This is also why I convinced myself that I'll be fine even dropping Call Hawk, which I have on the live version of the character, I'm really more about zooming into the heart of the pack to Heart of Darkness, Rending Flurry, and then lay about with melee attacks than stand back and use the admittedly excellent heavy ranged attack.

Force Feedback in Feral Charge and -Resist in unkindness? Certainly, but where will I get the slots? Everything is slotted *precisely* to where I get the recharge set bonus, OR frankenslotted fo whatever I wanted it to do: The only places I can pull slots are Possess, Fearsome Stare, Dark Consumption and Soul Drain. Pulling slots from the soul mastery aura sucks is certainly *an option*, but I'd have to weight that against having those powers get good enhancement values. I've never really played around with those expensive, high-end procs, so I don't know how to properly measure the benefits versus 25% more accuracy and recharge in Dark Consumption and Sould Drain.

All in all, thank you for your time and critiques for the build. I'm very grateful.

I try not to critique much since builds and fun are very subjective and it really hard to find a "bad" build. I am happy with mine to the point that my dark/savage dom is one of my favourite chars. I'll leave it here and hopefully it will give some ideas. It's not perfect (I'd like a different slotting on Dark Grasp) but concessions had to be made:

Are you wanting to be more Melee or Ranged focus for your offense?

Definitely more melee. I don't mind starting an engagement at range with Fearsome Stare and Unkindness, but I want to be Feral Charging and dropping Heart of Darkness, Rending Flurry, and so on in the middle of packs.

Yeah I went through a *ton* of iterations (I was running six slotted Cross Punch at one point). You really end up getting shredded in melee. Tons of deaths. -toHit, proc nukes and strong investment in self healing did wonders.

Edit: I invest pretty heavily in -res procs and damage procs normally, but find it more important with /Savage dealing lethal. I've found it usually lets you finish off stuff in one less rotation or so.
