In preparation for the upcoming hard mode ITF, I was asked if it was possible I bring either a Bane Spider or a melee-focused Widow to satisfy prerequisites for a themed run. I have neither, but what I do have is a chunk of experience running a Bane, as I had one for quite a while on Live, so that's what I chose. That was a long time ago, and things have changed since then. Here's my first real crack at it:

  Reveal hidden contents

Basically, this is the culmination of me throwing lotsa spaghetti a couple of ideas at the wall and seeing what sticks. Capped slow RES (basically a must have for all of my toons these days), some AoE (I understand this is a really weak spot for Banes), and a (hopefully) consistent ST rotation of Shatter -> Poison Ray -> Pulverize. If I were to use this build going forward, I'm torn on whether I should go Agility Core or Cardiac Core.

Is there anyone that can give me a pass on this? Thanks in advance.

Mainly on Excelsior. Find me in game @Spaghetti Betty.

I prefer a balance between the following:

Ranged ST attacks (because runners and sometimes you NEED to stay at range)

Melee ST/AoE attacks

Ranged AoE attacks

This is the way. 👍Invest more in your AoEs, they still matter especially for hardmode. You don't win via a war of attrition plinking away with ST attacks when facing overwhelming odds, you need AoEs. I would slot up frag grenade more, and replace the kb-kd with overwhelming force, and put a FF proc in it.

Poisonous ray is slow compared to what you can crank out with single shot + burst and both do -def for double the value of poisonous ray. Both gun powers recharge quickly and you can use just those as your ST ranged rotation. For ITF the -def might be relevant. Having build up recharge quicker is also relevant, I'd rather toss slots into buildup than tactics.

I placed less emphasis on resists because I think there's going to be a healthy spamming of barriers for this type of content. I did softcap defense so you can faceroll other normal content. Offense is something you really can't gain via destiny so I lean more towards offensive builds.

I have quibbles around the power selection order and I am not a big fan of Arctic Breath due to it's cast time and cone size.

AOE. If you have enough recharge, which you seem to have, I think Venom and Frag grenade are enough AOE for a Bane. Don't forget that Crowd Control is AOE.

Alpha. I use Muscularture Radial. Banes don't have the endurance issues that plague Widows. Unless you proc too much, another reason I don't like Arctic Breath, end expensive.

Procs. Poisonous Ray procs above average. So, does Surveillance, but I didn't have the slots to do that.

ITF Hardmode. Bane's biggest weakness is no DDR (Defense Debuff Resistance).

Teleport. Using Fold Space to pack mobs for nades and Crowd Control really helps. Also, makes the team AOEs more effective.

I use /bind lshift+s powexec_location back:35 "Combat Teleport" after fold space to get out the ball of mobs I just created.

Here is my current build as food for thought:

Arctic breath is so underrated.

Most look at just the cast time and the cone and dismiss it. But it is a proc monster that does -def and -res and causes knockdown. It is yet another power in a Bane's arsenal to stack -resist and the AoE proc damage output fills a much needed hole in a Bane's offensive kit.

My bane when specced for the typical ST heavy focus (with venom and frag of course) fold against stuff like rularuu, my blasters have a fighting chance because I can alpha strike a spawn with my nuke and trigger fear AI. That's what banes lack, Procced arctic breath does a good impression of a decent alpha strike rotation when combined with venom grenade (with a ragnorak KD IO) and frag grenade.

That's understandable. I was rolling more towards safety than anything, but I'll consider what you laid out. So far the only thing making me feel sour towards your build is no travel power.

This was a super rough draft. I just wanted to get the powers I thought would be most beneficial onto the thing so I had something to brainstorm with.

I'm gonna have to study yours a bit more to see how you got your defense numbers so high. Very interesting.

I picked it for pretty much every reason you said. It's the only power pick resembling a """nuke""" and comes with nasty debuffs. The end cost really hurts though. Was one of the reasons I was considering Cardiac, on top of extra resistance.

I'll mull over all the points made and come back with another draft soon.

Ok, I'm back. I did a little more brainstorming in Mids. I wasn't aware of the fact "hit by foe" and "damaged" aren't considered the same thing when it comes to Cloaking Device.

Right now I have 2 candidates for a final build. I ended up using @Nemu's as a framework. Fold Space is great, but I already have a good handful of toons that use it. Anyways, here they are:

  Reveal hidden contents

I just can't go without a travel power, so something had to go, or this toon would've been doomed to be played rarely. Maneuvers was my best bet. Some procs had to go so I could climb my way back to soft cap while still retaining my capped slow res and global recharge.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with it, but I did get curious and wanted to see what it would look like if I decided to forgo Arctic Breath to save myself the lost power pick in School of Sharks, and this is what I did instead...

  Reveal hidden contents

Dropping Arctic Breath allows me to pick Maneuvers back up for way better defense numbers. The other empty spot went to Poisonous Ray. My thought process was the extra Ranged attack means I don't have to lose DPS if I have to back out of melee/my target manages to get away from me. I'm sure there's something else that could go there, but I want to at least test the dmg output of it before I completely dismiss it.

You could just drop combat training offensive from my build and fit a travel power in.

There is a reason I use 4 piece lotg rather than 1 lotg 7.5 and 3-4 shield walls in some of the defense toggles. If you want to lean more into survival and keep your current slotting, then you can drop a proc from arctic breath and slot an Acc or Acc multi-mod IO in.

Ok, I'll give that a shot. I wasn't sure if CT: Offensive was vital to keeping acc high vs Cims.

Once I get some time to do some real testing in Brainstorm I'll report back.

I'm back. I took some time to go over the potential candidates one more time to see what I could do. Did some testing against 54 incarnate Cims. As suspected, survivability does not matter against them unless it's Tanker/Brute levels of durability or Defender/Corr levels of massive buffs. That's fantastic, because I'm probably ever going to be running content this hard on a team anyway, but what I have performed very successfully, minus the faceplant or two.

So here is what I eventually settled on:

  Reveal hidden contents

It is essentially @Nemu's build, but with some tweaks to satisfy my own gripes. Adjustments made to round out slow resistance to 100% (it matters, ok?), Super Jump, and a few more points of KB protection at the cost of some damage and Psi defense. I'm not too worried about losing some -Res procs, mostly because they don't stack on a team, and Bane already brings so much from attacks. I was still flattening mobs regardless. Proc'd out Arctic Breath is a little ridiculous. Its reach is kinda goofy, and the narrow arc doesn't bother me at all since I'm used to Full Auto on my AR blaster anyway.

All in all, I had a lot of fun collabing on this with everyone. Many thanks. I actually look forward to bringing this to teams in the future.
