Illu/TA: Need help with my first Mid's build

Hey everyone! This is the first time I created a build in Mid's and I am not sure if I did everything right.

 

This toon is 95% for team play and I probably won't do any hardmodes or PVP with him. It's more about supporting the team and my pets. I see this character as a battlefield strategist that analyzes the flow of battle and adjusts and supports accordingly.

 

I suppose I could rearrange the placements of the fighting and flight pool powers for low level content but I am not sure what's the best way to do so.

 

If you have some suggestions what I could improve please let me know! 🙂

Poison Ray over Disruption blast imo. Lots of procs in it. You aren't going to notice Disruption on teams but poison is a good "hard target" attack with decent -res in it.

 

I'd also be looking to proc ice arrow and acid but understand the need to go sets for quicker recharge for perma PAs

 

Arcane bolt over spectral isn't something I'd do personally. I love arcane on some of my controllers but the animation can be annoying. On my Ill/Dark/Sorcery I skipped Arcane and went Spectral + Poison Ray

Some valid points. Thank you!

 

I chose Arcane Bolt over Spectral Wounds simply because I love the animation and because of the characters origin. For now I took Disruption Blast over Poison Ray for the ability to lighten up OSA, AoE knockdown and the FF+ Recharge Proc. I might change it to Poison Ray and see what "feels better". There other sources to lighten up OSA.

 

I would love to have more procs in Ice Arrow and Acid Arrow but I also want perma PA. The struggle is real! 😉

Charm or Taser (free origin powers from P2) both work to ignite OSA.  Procs in Acid Arrow do great for ignition as well actually. 

 

If you're interested, this is how I build mine and it's been quite solid.  I don't worry as much about personal defense, since I find having just enough that my defense + flash arrow is effectively soft capped from pre-50 is plenty. That along with perma PA and slow immunity makes it solid enough to handle pretty much anything unless I get overwhelmed by ambushes.  Procs in Blind and Ice Arrow are solid damage at lower levels as well.

Yeah. I tried that while leveling yesterday. Guess I just need a macro that targets OSA and casts Apprentice Charm.

Not on PC right now.

 

Use Target_custom_near instead of next.  This will prevent you switching between targets if you happen to be on a team with multiple TAs.

 

Also, you only need it to say Oil or Oil Slick, the target isn't called Arrow, so that won't work.

 

As for your build, the biggest thing I see is not having Poison Gas Arrow.  It's really a fantastic power and one that shouldn't be skipped.  I personally like Flash and Glue arrow, but those are a bit more personal preference over PGA.

 

Finally, here's my Ill/TA for comparison.

 

Obviously if you want fly, you could swap out Teleport Target and Teleport for Fly/hover.

I'm still not sure about DIsruptor Blast ... but since I have never taken it before I will give it a try. If it doesn't fit my playstyle I could still swap it with either Spectral Wounds or Arcane Bolt. I know this will be super expensive but I'll gonna give it a shot.

Keep Arcane Bolt.


It's fantastic on Controllers.

 

You can stack Containment AND Arcane for 3x damage.

Some background: Back on Live, I was Local Man - I was somewhat well known because I wrote several Controller Guides posted on the old forums, including my popular  Illusion/Radiation Guide.  (When I came to Homecoming, someone had already taken my "Local Man" name)  I played a LOT of Illusion builds, including Ill/TA.  My old Ill/Rad guide has a lot of discussion about Illusion strategy and effective builds. (Of course, the Sorcery Pool wasn't an option then.)  I'll add a link to my guide at the end.

I suggest using Spectral Wounds - with a fast recharging blast (like Fire or Ice from the APP pools), you can have a very effective attack chain of Blind-SW-Blast-SW.  Spectral Wounds has Illusory Damage which heals back after a short time UNLESS you defeat the target before the heal-back.  So, to make the most effective use of the Illusory Damage you want to use it on foes who can be quickly defeated, i.e. Minions and Lieutenants. If you are able to keep the Illusory Damage, your attack chain puts out decent damage with Containment.

There's another huge advantage to defeating the low level foes first and fast -- Your pets go after whatever foes are around.  If you get rid of the low level foes, then your pets will focus on the tougher foes, keeping those tougher foes off your back.

Note that none of the PPP blasts recharge quickly enough to have a continuous Blind-SW-Blast-SW attack chain.  That's why I specify Fire and Ice.  The other advantage is that Fire will light your Oil Slick!  Fireball on Oil Slick is great.

Personally, I don't include the Fighting Pool in my Illusion builds.  I use stealth, Deceive and hiding behind pets and teammates to avoid aggro.  I would rather have more control and buff/debuff powers than give up three power slots for the Fighting Pool. The goal of any Illusion build should be to maximize Recharge to get Perma-PA, or as close to it as you can.  PA should be grabbing the aggo of tough foes while you take out the easy ones and fire off your arrows.
