Harrow Posted June 12, 2019 Posted June 12, 2019 I made a Fire/Ice Blaster with a Final Fantasy Black Mage costume and I'm trying to plan out a good build for him. So far I've skipped melee attacks (just for the theme), but I'm not opposed to grabbing one or two if they'd be super useful. I'm trying to maximize my defenses without sacrificing too much in the way of damage. Any advice at all would be appreciated! Leogunner Posted June 12, 2019 Posted June 12, 2019 No advice on the actual build but something about the theme and power choices: So you slot flares? Maybe it's been a while and a change was made in a later issue but flares always was crap. Also, you didn't slot chillblain. Considering you don't have any offensive ice powers on a black mage makes me wonder why you even went for ice as a secondary at all. And last I checked, black mages are glass cannons. I guess I'm just a theme purist and you just want to wear the costume. So disregard lol

I guess I'm just a theme purist and you just want to wear the costume. So disregard lol Well, one thematic concession I made on purpose was taking Fly and Hover. Black Mages don't get Float--that's a White Mage thing--so I should actually probably be going with Teleport instead. I might make that change if I can learn how to work better with Teleport as my main travel power. I'm trying to strike a nice balance between theme and usability, I guess. Would you recommend taking Fire Blast instead of Flares? As for ice attack powers, I'm sort of comfortable using ice mostly for utility and having most of my offense through fire, sort of like a Black Mage in Final Fantasy XIV. But if slotting up Chilblain would be useful, I'll go for it. When it comes to incarnate stuff, I also plan to take Pyronic Judgement so I can pretend it's Flare.
Harrow Posted June 13, 2019 Author Posted June 13, 2019 Made some updates to shift sets around and try to squeeze in a little more recharge. I also dropped the Flight pool (since it's not in-theme for a Black Mage to fly) and grabbed Teleportation instead, which should be interesting. Jeneki Posted June 13, 2019 Posted June 13, 2019 I see the knockback protection IOs slotted in powers such recall friend and surge or power. Remember that these will only become active if you've used that power in the last 120 seconds. So if you don't use recall friend or power surge all the time, you won't have any knockback protection. Consider putting this in a power you will leave on all of the time while in combat, I usually go with Combat Jumping or Hover but there are other places that work (since you took fighting, weave will work).
Harrow Posted June 14, 2019 Author Posted June 14, 2019 Aha, thanks for catching that! I didn't think about that.

I am not sure this is true. They are global and work as long as you don't drop down below 3 levels of the IO unless you make the attuned. I could be wrong........
oedipus_tex Posted June 15, 2019 Posted June 15, 2019 Don't bother with Fly unless you are super self conscious about power animations. Buy flight packs from the P2W vendor. They come in various designs. I like the Small Longbow Jetpack personally.
