new player trying to figure out BG mode

Hello folks. I haven't played sense the game first came out and never played a MM.  I am trying to figure out the bodyguard mode thing and not sure how to get it to work or see if it is actually working or not.  can anybody help me out and tell me to how to set it up? thank you :D

You have to set your pets on "Defensive Follow".

 

Then, and it takes a couple of seconds for them to complete the switch, they will start taking damage for you if they're within Supremacy range.

I think I figured it out lol. figured out how to make a macro and got my pets to goto defensive and follow defensive. still not totally sure if bodyguard is working, i dont see an icon but maybe its just passive affect.  thanks 😄

It's a passive effect that "turns on" when you're in defensive/follow mode.

 

Also, if you want more precise control over henchmen, I highly recommend these numpad binds:

Bodyguard also works in Defensive/Goto and Defensive/Hold, and AFAIK applies instantly. Remember that they also need to be in your Supremacy aura range

 

Be mindful with spamming Follow because it will cause pets to stop attacking for a few seconds. Using Hold once they are where you want can get them back into the action right away.

This. Defensive stance and Stay, Goto, or Follow = Bodyguard. If they are in defensive stance (the switch is instant) and in supremacy range you are in bodyguard, period. You can literally switch as a boss is winding up an attack and have the damage reduction kick in before the attack finishes and actually hits you and it works.  As long as you havent ordered them to attack a target specifically and they're in defensive mode Bodyguard is on so long as youre in range.
