Defense vs resist in a corruptor

Papaschtroumpf

Recommended Posts

For set bonuses I'm goin with +rchg as my primary goal, but I'm not sure if I should try and go for defense or resist. We have a relatively low HP so I think resist may make more sense?

Being /rad I also don't have much defense built into the secondary, at least not directly, but debuffs act like pseudo defense (reduces for ToHit)  and pseudo resist (-dmage) but make it hard to work out the numbers in Pine

the goal in general on *any* toon would be to soft cap defense and then try to work towards the best smashing/lethal resist you can manage (alongside any others).  but i dont know if that is entirely possible on many of the corrupter ATs.  /Time in particular has it easy here, but many of the other ATs function around targeted -to hit debuffs.  while technically the same as defense, it is far more volatile because whoever you planted the debuff on might run away or die.

one concept i really like is rotating rune of protection and melee core (hybrid) incarnate to keep yourself with 30%ish resist all and general mez protection.  that along with the pool power armor (i would generally recommend dark mastery across the board on every corruptor, but all of them have the same smash/lethal resist) will bump another 30%ish.  from there, general set bonuses and/or tough will get you capped on smash/lethal.

Corrupters also have a resist cap of 75%, so you can only build so high. What sort of attacks are you worried about? Based on your build and you play goals, compromises will have have to be made. But there are many mechanics that can compensate for a pure defensive build.

Since you’re running /rad, -ToHit *IS* the kissing cousin to Def (except that higher level targets and AV’s resist -ToHit). You could aim to build to 20% (two lucks to soft cap) or 32.5% (one luck to softcap) defense to all positions (melee, AOE, ranged), and rely on Radiation Infection for the remainder. In trickier battles, you could simply rely on inspirations for protection until everything is dead. Alternatively, you can aim for 45% ranged defense to give you some safety from many attacks that contain a mez component to avoid dropping your toggles.

Yeah good point on mezz protection until perma Clarion.

My corruptor is a hero, can I still take Soul Mastery and do I have to run the corresponding patron arc or is it available to anyone? I like the idea of having a pet and the spider has additional -regen I believe.

Edit: looks like you get a fortunata let, not a spider.

I was thinking power Mastery Force of Nature is better since it resist all types of damage? And mezz protect? My current plan would have Rune and Protection and Force of Nature by the mid-fourties and possibly take the Hybrid version if I don't go for the Assault path.

Sounds like if I can get some def from set bonuses it would be a good complement whereas more resist might do double duty with RoP and FoN.

You can get the patron power pools, but you do need to swap to redside and do any patron arc. Doing one unlocks all of the pools now. Scirocco's is the fastest.

Hey Papa!  I remember that name from the live boards.

Do you have Mids/Pines Hero Builder?  If not, get an updated one here:https://forums.homecomingservers.com/index.php/topic,541.msg2271.html#msg2271

Play with that and post a build and we can comment on that.

I am of the opinion that there is no one best way to build any character.  It depends on the player's goals for the character, playstyle, and expected uses (solo to 50, all teams, super support, etc).

That said, you need to be able to survive and eliminate your opponents so you will need some combination of defense, resists, heal, regen, endurance, and damage.  What I have found usually works best for me is some semblance of balance among those.  But, of course, a blaster might lean more towards damage and a tank to defense and resist.

Most of my builds will use 2 full sets of the ATOs, 1 to 5 sets of WinterOs, all the defense & resist procs (2 of each), and the HP/Regen/End procs (3-5 of those), a few LoTG +recharge, hasten, combat jumping, tough, weave, maneuvers, and for squishies either scorpion shield or one of the resistance shields.  It's not cheap, but it's also not almost impossible like it was on live with all the PvP procs going for 2 billion or more.  Here you can get the best stuff for 10-25 million at a max price, much less if you are willing to be patient or play converter roulette.

With the stuff above and a mix of other good sets I find that I can either softcap some defense, cap resist, or get a decent amount of both that my debuffs should cover the rest.  Many of my squishies also go for clarion radial for the mez protection and boost to special.

Good luck!

Hey Flea, remember you too!

I usually try to come up with a build that I can start using while leveling. I don't use 2xXP, I already have 2 50s so I'm not so much in a hurry to get there and I don't like it when people are in their 30s and still not using enhancements at all (not even SOs). For my scrapper I bought attuned enhancements on the way up to 50 so I felt I was getting the most for my level n the way to 50. even when examplaring for TFs. etc...

In fact examplaring is important to me on my 50s, I do a lot of TFs, playing with my sons who have such altitis they can't seem to get past the 30s, etc...

So I'm looking at a no-purples build that will serve both leveling up and for some time at 50 and learn what I would like to change and improve in my "forever build" in the 50s that then can include purples and the like. I do like the idea of buying ATOs while leveling and then deciding if I want to catalyze them while at 50 (generally the answer is yes)

My corruptor is an ICE/RAD. I'm going for mostly single target focus and would like to be able to solo AVs at some point, or at least really help teams with AVs otherwise. So while I love to team and rad has some team firendly stuff, it's not my primary focus. I focused on speed for this build, I want Perma-AM (perma Hasten would be nice too), with enough recovery to go with it). This build alternates between Rune of Protection and later Force of Nature for resistance and Mezz protection (once I 50 I may use Hybrid and Clarion to get similar results).

I'd like to add more ranged def, this is a hoverer build so I intend to avoid melee as I can.

This is my current work in progress. Powers taken trying to be examplar friendly, ignore the actual slot levels, I haven't optimized that yet, but the idea will be tp prioritize full +rechg out of sets.

I do have another thread on this build but fell free to comment on this one and a "forever 50" build that uses purples and other specialty enhancements

Thanks Flea, I won't access to computer to load it into Pine's for a week as I'm on vacation "off the grid" except for the occasional cell phone data connection, it'll likely be a bit before I fully digest your suggestion.

Can a Hero corruptor take Mace MaStery? Do I need to switch sides and go run the Black Scorpion arc? Not that it would be a big deal, something new to try.

Yes, you can get Mace Mastery by switching sides and running any of the Patron Arcs, although most people run Black Scorpion as its a bit quicker and easier.

But you don't have to run all the morality missions anymore.  Just head to Pocket D, find Null the Gull sitting on a truck, talk to him and tell him you want to change alignment.

Enjoy your vacation!

Hey Flea, my corruptor is now at lvl49 and I have been enjoying this build quite a lot with only minor changes (I wanted a hovering character and it brings great utility to this build for proper positioning and AM benefit flight speed)

Time to think about incarnates!

I find I get very little use out of mutation and fallout, so many rezzes in the game that they often "compete" with each other and I don't always get fallout out in time, so when I respec to add purples I will looks at possible other options there (or taking them last).

I am still intrigued about the use of Sorcery for +Res and I am leveling a fire corruptor with it to see if it can add a layer of survivability.

You could substitute Frost Breath for Fallout with the same slotting, or you could substitute a different proc to get knockdown or additional -res in lieu of the PvP lethal damage proc.

Then you need to find a one slot wonder like assault, burnout, or something else.

Adding in Sorcery is doable, but requires a lot more moving stuff around.

Here's a stab at the build with Sorcery.  A little less defense and recharge in exchange for Mystic Flight, Spirit Ward and Rune of Protection, which will give mez protection and additional resistance for 90 seconds.  Unfortunately, it can't be made perma.  One additional concern I would have is that Super Speed +stealth proc is practically invisibility unless the critter has extra perception (like Rikti drones and Rularuu eyeballs).  The stealth in Mystic Flight will make you harder to see, but they will see you and that makes it harder to stealth through missions.
