TrueRaiden Posted April 29, 2019 Posted April 29, 2019 Hi guys, a former City of Heroes player (Illusion/Kinetic controller, Ghost' *US/Mistress Divine *EU) just dropping in to say hello and to offer a possible solution. As we know, giving donations to pay for the game directly is way too risky due to copyright issues etc. What if the creator was to host a steam on twitch every now and then and we could donate to that person directly. That wouldn't be breaking any rules would it? We would be supporting the streamer and not the game directly after all.
Jaguaratron Posted April 29, 2019 Posted April 29, 2019 They could hook in google adsense to the forums and ask people to disable adblockers.
Water Posted April 29, 2019 Posted April 29, 2019 Your idea is enthusiastic but it would not work. Twitch (Amazon) take about 40% of donations, twitch (Amazon) does not fund copyright theft. To have a named and known person and their bank details would expose them to the potential wrath from that Korean game company.
Water Posted April 29, 2019 Posted April 29, 2019 They could hook in google adsense to the forums and ask people to disable adblockers. This would still be profiting from someone elses copyright as there is no other reason to be here except for CoH.
TrueRaiden Posted April 29, 2019 Author Posted April 29, 2019 Good points, maybe some other minor streaming site could also work? Anyway I could help support this game would be great honestly, I don't want it to disappear again!
Vitruvius Posted April 29, 2019 Posted April 29, 2019 Why not just sell score merchandise? T shirts etc
TrueRaiden Posted April 29, 2019 Author Posted April 29, 2019 T-Shirts would be a great idea too! Get a few budding artist from the community to whip up some cool designs and sell em.
Nylonus Posted April 30, 2019 Posted April 30, 2019 Well . . . we could send the person running things "birthday cards!" I mean everyone loves to get a birthday card! Even if it's not their birthday! And sometimes birthday cards have stuff inside.
pooper Posted April 30, 2019 Posted April 30, 2019 Some hosts allow users to donate directly to paying for server costs, which would circumvent any sort of legal issues. Regardless, they're being very paranoid. Unless you aren't charging players to play the game, donations are a legal gray area. (As shown by the countless Blizzard servers.)
Samy Posted April 30, 2019 Posted April 30, 2019 Regardless, they're being very paranoid. Unless you aren't charging players to play the game, donations are a legal gray area.Wrong. They are a *moral* gray area. Legally, they are *very* clearly illegal. I would like to make an X-Men comic, but it doesn't get any less illegal if I fund it with "donations" instead of charging straight out.
Warlocc Posted April 30, 2019 Posted April 30, 2019 Running the server is already illegal. Might as well double down and let the users take care of the cost.
Burnt Toast Posted April 30, 2019 Posted April 30, 2019 So many legal experts on here... (sarcasm) If you do not think the Homecoming team is not (and has not) consulted with attorneys... you would be mistaken. How about we let them do what they can do and advise us of any "donations" that can or cannot be requested on their own schedule. Certainly beats all these internet lawyers out there flooding the boards with the same old back and forth.
Allatum Posted April 30, 2019 Posted April 30, 2019 Do a podcast, make it about heroes and comics. Somewhat mildly related to the server. You'd be making your own content, could possibly patreon it.
Retired Game Master GM Dredd Posted April 30, 2019 Retired Game Master Posted April 30, 2019 Folks, I know everyone wants to help, but just look at Star Trek: Axanar for what happens when money starts getting involved with someone else's IP, even if all you are doing is taking donations for your fan project or selling merchandise with no intent to profit. For right now the admin team has a handle on things, relax and enjoy the game :)
