Interested in what folks thought of the film!  The RLM guys have review up already.  “Trash dracula look like boat”.

@Snarky, I thought you killed it as Count Orlok, mate.  🦇

I enjoyed it quite a lot!

Spoiler alert.  Do not read past this ---------------------------

I thought the film truly captured the original vision.  It is my belief that almost every aspect of the film echoed the time, style, and themes of "Nosferatu."  Which, in my mind, might have opened the work to some criticism.

I am no Karen, nor do I jog under the banner of political correctness.  You folks mostly know me.  Yet, in my opinion, the film echoed the nineteenth century's attitudes toward women slightly too well.  Yes! to capturing that time on film accurately. Perhaps? No? to actually echoing the logic in the film somewhat.  It seemed to me (just from 1 viewing, YMMV) that it could be that Ellen Hutter's "coming of age" was the cause of this evil released into the world.  And from the film's themes that could easily be taken to mean her sexuality ( just blatantly itself, and also it's threat to male patriarchy ) was to blame for her reaching out to ... something not good.

Also, I found the final act treatment quite good, but also ... wanting.  It would have been better (in my mind) if it was more explicitly stated how the final trap was sprung and that Ellen knew exactly what she was doing and the cost.  It worked, but in my mind it could have been tuned to quite a better pitch for much more resonance.

These are my thoughts only.  I have not read any reviews and have only watched the piece once.  So far...

Just to clarify, the "Trash Dracula..." quote wasn't from RLM's Mike or Jay, they had a segment where they were quoting user reviews and that was one of them.

Anyway, I'm a fanboy of the director, Robert Eggers, I love each and every movie he's ever made.  So, when I say that this was what I expected from a Nosferatu movie by Eggers, that's high praise.  It's gross, keeps you in a state of perpetual unease and looks fantastic.  The cherry on top was Lily Rose Depp who showed that she belongs in movies, not just another nepo baby.  Pretty much every performance was top notch including (unsurprisingly) DaFoe who revisits the world of Nosferatu 24 years after "Shadow of the Vampire" (see Snarkum's profile pic).

It's not going to be for everybody, that's how it goes with Eggers, which was the point of the RLM bit about "Trash Dracula...".  It was for me though.

Yeah, I guess I should have pointed out that the "trash dracula" thing was written by some mouthbreather idiot.  I agree with Mike and Jay completely in that this movie was far too intelligent and nuanced for your typical movie-goer to understand (with no context).  This film will make your average Twilight fan puke blood.

I personally loved the film, though I think I liked Eggers' "The Witch" a bit more.  "The Witch" was just so goddamn evil and disturbing, yet gave none of the typical telegraphs before its horrific parts.  It was relentless, and a big part of that was how elfin and sweet Anya appears to be.  She did a masterful job in the roll, so much so I kinda was thinking Anya could maybe have done more in Depp's role.

There's a theory that the crappy "look like boat" review was someone mistyping "Borat".  Or maybe they were just on meth.

If I had to pick my top three most disturbing horror movies:  "The Exorcist", "The Witch", and "Midsommar" (I have a huge crush on Florence cuz of this movie, does that make me mentally ill?).  All three of them let you sit in the vile, they don't cheap out with musical stings or camera tricks.  They make you look at the horror headon.  "Nosferatu" is a close fourth for me now.

P.S. I feel like I'm writing a book, but if you like this kind of film and haven't yet, I would HIGHLY recommend "Midnight Mass" on Netflix.

Snarky this is something I was telling you about in voice a few weeks ago.  You've got to see Midnight Mass.
