I've read a lot on this, I know the soft cap is 45%.

 

At what point over that is extra overkill when it comes to defensive value?

 

I've always built primarily for resist and wanted to try something new.

I believe Arcanaville suggests to build for around 47-49% to have a buffer.

Incarnate softcap however is 59% however. A lot of folks say it's unnecessary to build that high though, as any I-trial will have plenty of buffs for you, but I would say personal preference.

I can get melee up to 80-90ish but is it with it?

 

Confusing defense and resist?

 

If not, there shouldn't be a need to get defense that high.

59% is good, and relatively easy to get on SR. I can't agree with the idea it's overkill, unless you always have a team behind you. If you want to solo incarnate arcs on +4/x8, those levels of defense are useful (especially as the IDF has further tohit buffs).
