*/Regen - build for +res or +def?

What's the conventional wisdom on which is better to chase? My gut says +res simply because /Regen has one +res power (which gets to ~16%) but no native +def. I'm also finding +res set bonii are far easier to come by, which is also pushing me in that direction, Does that jive with others' experience? (Water primary if that's relevant.)

Personally, I like to not aim for either exclusively, and instead get the best "bang for your buck" option for individual slots. Which translates to ~20% def to all (steadfast, gladiator, weave, CJ, maneuvers, full gaussian set), 8% res to all and rising (Shield Wall, Reactive defenses), probably 30-40%ish S/L res through Tough and bonuses and some decent F/C res through purple sets and winter sets.

Building this way gives you a lot of potential upside with powers like Barrier, purple and orange inspirations, team buffs, and so on.

^ This is the conventional wisdom for Regen regardless of AT.  The answer is not about what is mutually exclusive, but instead what helps the most without compromising too much offense.

I have a 50 water/rad Sentinel. No special IOs.

 

Water blast - looks good

* Whirlpool - I slot slows and -def. Primary to keep mobs grouped while AOE-ing

 

Regen

* Moment of glory is very situational. I personally would drop it for weave. A power that will constantly provide defense.

I put MoG at the end of my Regen builds to mule Steadfast Protection +3% Defense (or a LotG +7.5% Global Recharge).

On My Fire/Regen Sentinel (50+1 atm), I decided that since I couldn't cap either defense or resistance, I'd just lean into more recharge, recovery, and regen.  I figure I'd just do my best to heal my way through the damage, rather than avoid/absorb it.  I did take Hover, Leadership, and Fighting to get as much def/res as possible, but even then it's not much of those.  I 4-slotted Kick and Tough for the defense bonuses in Kinetic Combat and Unbreakable Guard, respectively.

Great thoughts, thanks for all the replies. The MoG comments do make sense, I'll likely push it to 47/49 to mule a LotG.

 

@Rathulfr, I'll prolly use parts of your build as a template to see where I can squeeze in those higher defenses, and push my regen numbers a bit more too.
