Night Widow Build Help

Jazno

Recommended Posts

Asking for any help critiquing my Night Widow Build.  I am trying to stay right at the def cap while keeping perma hasten and perma mind link.  I'm very attack heavy and not for sure on my pool powers.  I don't have a lot of experience with this class so any help is appreciated.

Hi there!

One thing I did on mine was frankenslotted Mind Link with different sets' Def/Recharges to get it close to perma. I think the way mine is right now I'm off by a few seconds but the defense worked out better in mine. CT: Offensive could probably be dropped for almost anything else. I never noticed it really helping much, even at earlier levels. Your build reminds me I keep forgetting to respec so I can get Aid Self (thanks for reminder #451... perhaps it will light a fire to remember finally). Mental Blast I don't know much about because I tend to stick to the stabby mcstabyourface powers on mine.

The IOs you have I didn't pay much attention to because it is late her and the sleepies are kicking in, but I did want to post something of a reply so you didn't feel left hanging completely. Happy toxic stabbing out there!

I just got my Widow to 50 last weekend, so I thought I'd try a Night Widow build for her.  Here's what I came up with.  Critiques are welcome.

Jazno feel free to compare mine and ask any questions.  I played a Widow and Fort to 50 on live but it's been so long I think I've forgotten everything.  Some of my stuff might be kinda random.

Question for you:  What does Mids show you for Defense for Melee, Ranged, and AOE without Mind Link (but with all other Def toggles turned on).   Mine is 32%, 29% and 30% respectively.

Let's see if this crazy thing works. (OK purple was not a good idea, let's try blue.)

Hello, fellow NW,

I saw your question about the DEF numbers and though I may not be who you specifically asked, I'd like to offer mine up as a comparison... I ended up, before incarnate abilities, with 42% on melee and about 36% on both ranged and AOE. I'm working on a respec but not sure how to allocate 4 extra slots I can take out of Elude and Placate since I don't use them hardly at all anymore.

I don't see a lot of Widows in game and even fewer Night Widows.

This is what I am currently using, some what experimental.  Trying some things just cause.

Relatively inexpensive build, or at least easy to come by enhancements.

This is a melee character, Night Widows are not known for their ranged damage and this build makes no effort to over come that lack.

I found my original build from years ago.  Went a little crazy with the defenses.  In the past I used build up instead for follow up, liking follow up better so probably going to keep it.  I did not try to get perma hasten or even use hasten, don't find it necessary, other probably think I'm stupid, but it plays the way I want to, so whatever.  Smoke Grenade instead of Placate, not sure on this yet, hardly use, probably go back to Placate.  Dart Burst in place of Psy Scream, damage is about the same, but, the longer recharge on Psy Scream, may change to Psy Scream or Eviscerate, reasons to like either, haven't decided yet.  For me, the way I play my widow, Aid Self is as close to mandatory as it gets.  Tried Injection in place or Air Other, I am not a healer, but I almost never use it, probably put Aid Other back in when I get around to, if ever, a respec.  Thinking about a Max HP from Unbreakable Guard in Tough, don't see how it cannot be anything but an improvement, that is the problem with a Widow build so dependent on defense, any hit is a big hit, so more health seems more better.  Follow Up does not need the Blistering Cold, any other set you like is fine, put it in on a lark.  Mind Link, the all day long cast is annoying, to me, so 85ish second recharge, with almost 4 second cast, on a 90 second duration is what I wanted, works for me, I like it.  Poison Dart have it for the debuff, -regen, not all that important but some AVs do have good regen, so slowing it down helps.  Foresight, is it over enhanced, maybe, but, early game content, having the defense and combined with Combat Training: Defense is good for a melee character.

One problem I am having with the planner, it shows about 150ish more health than the in game stats, don't know where it is coming from, 1574 vs 1415.

sorry for the data chunk only, I can't seem to get it to produce a readable text format.  Tell me  how and I repost it.

Overall it's a very good build, better than mine probably.  Some random thoughts:

1.  You may have over slotted Tactical Training: Maneuvers.  Depends a bit on intent but you're seriously into ED territory  (meaning all the bonuses you slotted into it aren't being used).

2. Is Combat Jumping needed?  At high levels at least I'm plenty maneuverable, and you have plenty of Defense powers already.

3.  I don't see the point of Blistering Cold in Follow Up.  It gives typed defense and you want positional.  Did I miss something?

4.  Six slots of Scirocco's Dervish, you have lots of Psi defense and Psi resistance already.  Maybe one slot could be moved elsewhere?

5. Mask Presences seems over slotted to me too, its bonus is quite small  so all the defense sets are going to waste a bit.  May be an opportunity to move some slots around there.

6. Again Reactive Armor in the Tough power gives typed defense and you want positional, I don't see the point of that.

7. I went for a more Stalker-ish build, but with Aide Self, Tough and Weave you might be able to tank.  Consider maybe dropping Mask Presence or Combat Jumping and adding Confront.

All just my 2 nickels.

This build was originally from the 8 years ago.  One of the things they did( back then) to try and get a better balance between defense and resistance was change how attacks were defended against.  Instead of getting multiple tries on defense, (typed def and positional def) attacks were flagged as typed or positional and you only got 1 try on defense.  Instantly, resist based characters performed closer to defense heavy characters.  One affect of that was a lot of defense based characters heavily favored type or positional, (Super Reflexes comes to mind) my SR scrapper started taking more damage.  The widow was one of the few archtypes that could have high positional defense and good type defense.  One of the reasons I made the Widow.  Also, with a team of Widows you could get to the game defense cap of %225.4, of absolutely no use what so ever, but was fun anyway.  And, the %5 rule still applied.  For this build I decided to see if I could get to the magic %45 for both positional and typed def.  So some of the set selections were with that in mind, the fallout of thata was positional defense gets crazy values, in game the lowest shown is AoE at %60, talk about over kill.  One other issues I had/have  was  with the lower level content, have endurance recovery issues and since my aid self is at 49, it is not available, health regen helps speed up game play.  Those were some of the issues and thoughts that shaped set selection, the bonuses.  Keeping in mind the rule of 5.

So, now some thoughts on your comments.  Also, the levels shown in the build are what is currently loaded, except Tough has an Unbreakable Buard Max HP.

1:  TT Maneuvers.  It worked out that way because of the set bonuses, regen and recovery.

2:  Combat Jumping, absolutely need it, I am just to active in movement, being able to turn in mid-jump and coupled with SS all the travel power I need.

3:  Agreed about the Blistering Cold, as stated was just a lark, it replaced a Crushing Impact set, but any set you like there is just fine.  Keep in mind the recharge on Mind Link.

4:  Just raising the typed defense to Psi, other wise you are correct.

5:  ~%4 defense to everything is not "quite small"  to me, again set bonuses and the global recharge.  The "hide" ability for the  widow is from Mask Presence, so when a team wants to stealth a mission, I can, and the Crittical Hit bonus from Hide.

6:  As stated, positional defense is already at the crazy level, don't need more, originally was raising typed defense, not so much now as installed an Unbreakable Guard Hax HP in tough.  Maybe some more changes there.

7:  For me, no possibility dropping  either Combat Jump or Mask Presence, but, maybe Smoke Grenade since I almost never use it and replacing it with Confront, an idea I had not really given much thought to, so maybe.  Respecs are just not fun.

I am noticing a distinct lack of slotting for S/L resistances but that might just be a personal preference of my own. Smoke grenade is entirely skippable if you don't need it for set bonuses as is Mental Blast. For reference, attached is the build I am running incarnate level at the moment.
