No experience with Katana but I love Dual Blades. I chose Dual Blades over Katana simply because I like the animations better and it fit more character concept. DB feels like a very fast/active set to me, which can be fun. Damage is a barrage of little cuts over time. You sort of nickel and dime the enemy to death. It's like feeding them slowly into a wood chipper, an inch at a time. lol
Yeah, I can get that. To each their own. For me, I like how I can click Soaring Dragon outside of enemy range and then run past them and suddenly they get knocked up and cut. It's just like you see in samurai animes where the samurai runs past them and there's a delay before anyone realizes what just happened.

Need help with this build. One hit of Divine Avalanche puts you at 46% Melee def. Tried to get in a bit of ranged def and energy resists. Chime in for improvements.

I both Koopak and Riverdusk's posts have hit on the most important difference, which is the feel, experience and taste for the animations/sound of them 😃
Katana's animations are very well done, they flow together nicely and have an appropriate, efficiency of movement style that seems like what a real katana user would do. That also means its a bit more subtle and subdued compared to flashier sets. Contrast that with Dual Blades, which is practically screaming "Look at me I am amazing I am twirling and swinging and twirling!" with every attack.I played DB scrapper back in live and loved it. I recently hit 50 on a katana and was less enthusiastic about it, i'm sure the numbers I was putting out were good but it felt less impactful, probably because of the lack of showboaty flailing. DB is on my list to get to eventually again!
Your thoughts on Katana animations are well on point. Katana's animations and sound effects are PERFECT. Very satisfying. Katana is BEAUTIFUL and LETHAL.

I can humbly suggest that you stack in a good mix of res and def. The two +def to all IOs? Get them. The two +res to all(the scaling res one gives +3 or +5 res no matter what)? Get them. Get a good mix of res, def, and healing and WP becomes damn near immortal. My TW/WP brute is the guy who literally tells the rest of the team to go ahead on the escorts, that I got the ambush. And 8 or 9 times out of 10, I DO.
Can you post your build please?

mind/fire, why choose anything but the best? 😇
Does anyone have a video of this build in action? Never played a Dom before but am leveling one that's Mind/Fire. Could use tips on how to play a Dom. I am used to playing controllers but not a Dom yet.

You all have made very good and eye-opening suggestions. Ty. So below is after making changes. Ranged def was well above soft cap so moved some of that over to recharge time bonus as well. Thoughts?

I hope you plan to team. You've taken no attacks whatsoever. I think you're overly concerned about defense.
- Infrigidate needs accuracy. It's also a good place to slot a Shield Breaker set or slot it with procs.
- I would devote 2-3 slots to each shield. You can max out the defense buff with two 50+5 IOs or three LOTG.
- Snow Storm is skippable. If you're going to take it, it doesn't need more than one endred IO.
- Quicksand doesn't need more than one recharge IO.
- Hasten only needs two 50+5 IOs.
- Frostwork is skippable. If you're going to take it, I wouldn't devote more than the base slot.
- Earthquake doesn't need a KB>KD (it's KD already). Replace it with an Achilles' Heel -res.
- Benumb needs accuracy.
- Sleet doesn't need more than two recharge IOs. If you're going to slot a set, I would go with defense debuff or accurate defense debuff.
- Heat Loss needs accuracy. It doesn't need more than two 50+5 IOs (four is well over the ED cap), but I would consider slotting an endmod set. Preemptive Optimization works well and is cheap.
- Tough, Weave and Maneuvers all need endred if you plan to run them.
- No travel power until lvl 49?
Ty for the awesome suggestions! Yes, this is a team build. Solo is too slow for my taste on controllers. If I want to solo I play a DPS focused AT. I'm overly focused on ranged def because AOEs generate lots of aggro and there are no heals. I just kept face planting on fast paced teams without tanks. So had to rethink the build.
-
Since these power sets offer no healing power, I prioritized ranged defense above all (~48%). With heat loss, end is not an issue and I believe it is the only power where you need to get closer to a baddie? Can pop in while flopping around due to earthquake and heat loss real quick. Recharge is not as high as I'd like but that can be fixed with incarnate powers. Chime in for improvements.

I know it's almost three weeks later, but you can't currently connect to the test server using Island Rum because the necessary manifest update was never pushed out (and won't be until the next major update gets pushed to the test server). You should upgrade to the Homecoming Launcher.
The instructions in this thread describe how to do it for legacy launchers (Tequila, Island Rum, CreamSoda, whatever else is out there) but as I said above you won't be able to get on until a manifest update is pushed.
Found it! Ty. Do you know if I can log in on the test server while also logged in on the actual live servers?

Ice/Cold is fun. Though it depends on what you're aiming for. For me, I don't care to do dmg. If I want to solo or do DPS I'll go play a Blaster or Scrapper. Slowing things down and debuffing the F out of them is so fun with Ice/Cold. The animations and sounds are great too. Heat Loss is awesome!

Aside from the test server, never played Ice/Cold. Looking for improvement suggestions. According to mids melee def is 51% but it drops 10% during battle. So near soft-capped, I guess?

It's easier done from the point of view that most (all?) single target confuses doesn't aggro them. So you can stand a bit away spamming it til it takes without them ripping off your face. And as noted Confuse durations are longer than Hold ones.
Okay. Never played a Dom. I'm intrigued enough to consider rolling one. Ty.

In an 8-person team setting, everyone is going to feel that they are picking up the scraps because no one has their kill-all AoEs up for every mob. so don't sweat that.
My most overpowered AoE scrapper is Rad/Bio, and it's ridiculous solo.
Rad/Bio...hmmm tell me more! Any builds you can refer me to? Or at least slotting advice?

I really enjoyed my Spines/Willpower scrapper. Spines is a cheap set to trick out because you can get good bonuses from sets that are not much in demand.
There are a couple Chance for Recharge Slow procs that it takes, Dark Watcher's Despair IIRC, and you can have multiple instances of that in your aura, your pulsing
PBAOE, and even Caltrops. That puts a lot of debuff on the baddies in very short time.
Spines is a very end heavy set, so Willpower is the obvious secondary. When nothing else was going on I'd log to my spines scrapper and go work the Roman wall.
Interesting. Is this still the case? Love scrappers and have more than I can afford to deck out but never tried an AoE focused one yet. Or are there better options for a cheap AoE scrapper? Just looking to make one where I can run ahead and jump in the middle of mobs in fast-paced end game team missions.

Playstyle/Goal: Super endgame debuffer. AVs/ TFs.
What synergizes best with Cold? Ty!

Excellent point. Rocky is and can be made very sturdy and fulfill the same roll as PA in Illusion to tank AVs for the controller. About the only difference is he's not indestructible and having a Heal of some sort can helpful for the inevitable blows that get through.
Recommended slotting to make him very tanky?

You want Pure Control. Nothing beats Earth/TA. Double ST Holds, 1 ST Immob to combine with your AOE Immob for bosses. 2 AOE holds (Volcanic Gases, EMP). 2 Slow fields, Debuffs for days. Couple that with Stone Mastery (another ST hold, AOE knockback/up) and nothing will move unless you will it.
Of course you do pretty much no damage and need a team for that. Even if you are on a speed team you always have something that will keep things together or control the situation when things go bottom up.
I also have a Earth/Storm and there you get a more balance (late game) of control/damage. Traps/Nature/Rad are also top synergizers with Earth.
I basically have every single combo of Earth Controllers....I LOVE EARTH!!
Jist rolled Earth/Cold but I've been seeing posts about Earth/TA. Just as I build my tanks for pure tanking and no DPS focus, I like my controllers to be made for pure control. Never played /TA on a troller. Are you able to post your build please? Ty.

I agree that stalagmites is a great opening. It is one of the best earth control power, as it has a very quick animation, it recharges quite fast and it debuff defenses, obviously. This is why I never take flight on an earth controller (but this is me). If I need to fly and hover (like hami raids and shadow shards TFs), I just go log off in the shadow shards for the rechargeable jet pack. An earth controller can stand back, a bit away from the fight, as non of its significant powers are PBAoE (and can keep mobs away). Moreover, Stoney might only have single target attacks, but he likes to switch targets a lot and he has a very efficient taunt in its melee attacks.
Obviously, if you have a secondary, like Kinetics, that is more efficient in melee, then you have to adjust.
As far as slotting for defense debuff, an earth controller, whatever the secondary, I don't think it is worth it, as all the powers debuff defenses and you have 3 patches you can lay on the ground to help out if required.
You guys make good points. Ty. And yeah. I've ALWAYS opened with Stalagmites. By the time the tank gets to the mob, all of em are stunned and looking retarded before being locked down further lol. Stalagmites > Stone Cages > EQ. Then whatever I feel like. By then aggro shifts to tanks and other DPS dealers. Usually. I've used that chain on many teams (Earth/Dark) without tanks on it to keep things moving along.
If I see a second mob close by, I don't wait for the trigger happy blaster or pet aggro. I throw down tar patch and quick sand and then volcanic gasses.

If you want. With Earth’s -Def, doesn’t make much difference.
Ah good point. Makes sense.

Here is the one I use in-game. Note that I didn't choose Stalagmites so that I could use Hover.
