So, the issue with the City architecture, is that for a *full* translation of the game, server side text has to be translated, which means that *everyone* will see said translated text.  You can translate the client strings, so menu options, and the like would be in whatever language you want, but mission text, NPC speech, any contact dialog would all have to be a single language.  This is why there were seperate servers for French and German back before Paragon/NC axed those translations.  The server only supports a single language at any time.

Ah right. That explains a lot. Clearly wasn't developed and marketed in Europe a lot back in the day.

(I used to write software for various European customers in the early 2000s, and we designed multi llingual support into the application from the start. I got to improve my German and French quite a bit in those days...

  2. So, the ones I'm aware of at the moment:

    1. Friday iTrials starting 20:00 CET in Dark Astoria near the hospital.
    2. Saturday 20:30 CET Hamidon raids Hero and Villain sides. Starts in The Hive.
    3. Sunday 19:00 CET Mothership Raid, starts in the Rikti War Zone (SW of the crash site.)
    4. Sunday 20:00 CET iTrails for badges.

The times might actually be BST for some, which leads to some confusion when the continent and the island switch between summer time and winter time on different dates.

See also Li Sensei's post below.

As long as you don't use XP buffs from the P2W, I don't think you outlevel content at +2 level.

It was so long ago, but I think that before the noterity thing there was a way to set it at a couple of different difficulty levels and +2 is the equivalent of what is the highest level that was originally intended to be set up too.

I think it can go without saying that you can always go and do missions below your level in the Ouroboros and it will set your character to the intended arc level until you complete the content.

This seems to fit with the "read-all" mind set.

Do your teams do a lot of roleplaying chat in general during your missions?

I never use XP buffs, except maybe above level 45 to make the last levels go a bit faster.

I do find that at more than +0, I out level the content, but the fact that I rarely play alone and often have "blue xp" saved up might play in to that. For example, going though Praetoria and then First Ward, you will reach level 20 and then 30 before the stories end.

Ouro is a hassle and doesn't feel as nice as getting the stories from the NPCs in the areas they are in.

We don't really roleplay, it's more like reading an interactive book with a few friends.

That is what someone else said, but I haven't checked it out yet.

I haven't made a new alt since then. It's been a busy week.

I usually start out at +1, 1 and then move up as the character is able to handle it. I was usually on +2, 2 as soon as slotted with SO's, but I wait to get a couple more powers at this point since SO's are available so low at this point.

I progress difficulty from there. Setting to a level to make it difficult but not impossible to beat for solo or the team that I'm with.

I know others that do that. I know this one player that will copy-and-paste everything into /team that the rest of the team can't see ... if you let them.

I can see how that can be fun to read everything (the DEVs did take time to put there for people to read), but I usually don't take the time to do it most of the time. Especially the clues. I hardly ever read those ... even though I take time to write them out in AE missions that I create.

I checked before I made the post, at least at Icon in Atlas park.

I find that if you go higher than x0,+0, then you get a lot of XP, and you outlevel the content you're doing before the stories end, so you have to stop XP gain. I prefer getting less XP and going through the content at the intended speeds, but with less of a challenge/struggle, or with quite sub-optimal builds.

We're always on discord, so the mission owner just reads the texts out loud. Better team mission sharing and voice overs is one of the things that I miss in CoH compared to more modern MMOs.

This, so much this.  Which kind of leads into why I asked the question.

I've got plenty of Inf.  Every toon that I want billion dollar-builds on has them, plus a billion or so Inf just sitting around doing nothing.

But what I'm short on is time.  Try as I might I can't buy time.  I can sell time, we all sell time, most of us sell 40 hours a week.  Just can't buy any.

So when my SO's turn yellow, do I really want to spend 15-20 minutes shopping for salvage and recipes then crafting recipes into IO's, then slotting the IO's into powers - oh and buying unslotters for when I'm ready to replace those with higher ones later?

Or do I want to just hit the magic Upgrade button and spend that 15-20 minutes playing?  That 15-20 minutes is a few story arcs.  Or a Posi or a Penny. Or a Posi AND a Penny.  Which brings me Merits that I can use to buy Converters which I can sell on the market for funds to keep pushing the magic Upgrade button.

So I guess what I really should have asked was: is it viable to just vendor everything

EXCEPT Orange Salvage and Special Salvage (Converters, Catalysts, Unslotters, etc) and the occasional high selling recipe - which is actually worth selling on the AH.

Would THAT strategy earn enough to keep pushing the Upgrade button every 5 levels or so?

Yes, I know it's wasting INF.  But that's what INF is for....

I don't think that before level 50, you can easily earn the inf needed to upgrade  everything, if you have only SO's slotted. I know I can't, but I don't focus on getting inf when I'm levelling. Unless I donate inf to my toons/alts, they have nowhere near the inf needed to just "push the button".

I have a few racks with stacks of common salvage in the SG base, and some storage with all of the more common generic IO's of all levels. My characters just pick what they need, and I have one crafter with all generic IOs memorized, who crafts some new ones if we run out. All characters dump their salvage in the base and that's usually enough to keep everything topped up, except for Boresights, Human Blood Samples and Luck Charms. I spend a few minutes restocking ever month or so.

I use SO's when I get them and can use them, and don't worry about slotting everything as I level (certainly below level 30), except for Accuracy. I find that as long as you have enough Accuracy, the rest doesn't matter much while levelling, at least at +0 x0. I am in no hurry to get to 50, I like the stories and the missions.

I store the more frequently used SOs in the base if I have space. (Accuracy, Health, Recharge, End. Mod., Damage) with the pile of crafted IO's that I keep in stock.

I really don't find the common generic IOs much of a hassle with my set up, my base more-or-less functions as a vendor, I just have to restock occasionally. I use SOs if I have them below level 30-35, above that level, I think IOs have the math in their favour any way, and the prices go up, and levelling slows down.

I go to the Icon in Atlas (only have 4 villians... I think it's 4) and set-up the other costumes that I already have planned out. Usually an IB (innocent bystander) and maybe a couple of other variations or "form" changes (変身!)  - Might have to go to the Pocket D and visit the costume person there if I want to have size or gender changes in the mix.

I thought you could just talk to the plastic surgeon at the back of the shop? On the villain side as well.

I do a lot of the things you do as well, except I level almost exclusively doing missions at +0 x0. I still haven't seen all the stories this game has to offer. I do a lot of them together with friends, often in a "fixed" team so we follow along in the stories together. I have a few toons that solo or PuG for when none of my friends are on.

I have about 40 alts, of which two are level 50, most are below level 40, but slowly getting there. I usually play until I run out of blue XP and then switch to a different toon.

I read all the mission dialogs, clues and such.

So, really not every unusual, mostly how I think the game was meant to be played back then. A lot of it is still new to me.

  7. There was a bug a year ago where it would "edit" the .sh file it uses to launch the game when you click the blue arrow in Island Rum and add a few random characters.

Making the file read-only was a work around.

This created the same behaviour as you describe: starts Wine, then doesn't understand what to do next.

I don't have time to go and debug now, but maybe something like that is happening here as well. There are a few files that get rewritten by Island Rum every time before it tries to start the game, to give Wine the correct install location to find the files.

  9. The IO sets take quite a bit of investment, but just the general IO's only take common salvage and will work well enough, even for quite a bit of level 50 content. I have level a 50 toon without any IO sets.

And sometimes you can get some things cheap on the Auction House, people craft these things just to level up and then dump their inventory. Just put out a few low-ish bids and usually you can get what you want in a couple of weeks. No need for even crafting the generic IOs. A few will be hard to get this way, like Accuracy, Health and Endurance Modification.

I take forever to get to level 50 (I have nearly full incarnate level 50, and one that doesn't have any incarnate powers yet). I have like 30 alts.

But I don't PUG much, I mostly play with a fixed set of friends, with whom I also play other games. There are quite a few groups on the server with their own discord channel or server, join one of those. Unfortunately the Super Group doesn't really work that well in City of Heroes as a guild or fleet does in other games.

I really dig the idea that they would be a Vigilante group moreso than an "Enemy" group, almost like a pseudo Primal version of the Resistance, natural people "fighting back" against the super-natural.

Yeah, they give a bit of a Tank Top Army from One Punch Man vibe.

Intended to be heroes, but a bit rude and inconsiderate to anyone not buff and in a tank top.

Really frustrating to feel like you're being charged extra for their problems. I hope some of this gets credited in future months.

Do you or @Telephone have a NON-BINDING, GUESSTIMATE on what the next few months are going to look like bill-wise? Surely we've gotta be out of the weeds on these  SCALE-3 transition costs by now...

In my experience these things happen with such hardware. I haven't received a data processing cluster yet, where there wasn't some issue before we could fully use it. ( we once had to send 100 motherboards back to Taiwan for them to actually replace a component.). And it doesn't really matter with supplier: HP, Dell, Super Micro, IBM, Lenovo, etc. We once had to write our own network card driver to get the full performance of the hardware.

It's nice if a service like OHV ends up with the costs for such things, but that's in the fine print of the contract.

And delivery times are all over the place right now.

Thanks for keeping the City running, we had a blast last weekend doing the Halloween stuff.

In many communities, building to accommodate mass transit is an afterthought, much less pathing for cyclists/pedestrians. As densely built up as many major cities are, shoehorning in dedicated bike lanes is problematic if not next to impossible. Aggressive drivers and aggression towards others on the road is another huge issue with those on 2 wheels (cyclists and motorcyclists) receiving a good deal of it. Heck, drivers fail to see semi's... cyclists are pretty much invisible.

Attitude and infrastructure are in need of change.

I do not agree that dedicated bike lanes in densely built areas are impossible. I think that they actually help. If you build bike and pedestrian infrastructure, and mass transit, and make it faster than the same distance by car, you will see that densely populated areas are actually perfect for getting people to not use the car. The result is that even for those that do have to use a car, the experience is better than if there was no such infrastructure.

    NotJustBikes explains it quite well:

If driver do not see other road users, your roads are designed incorrectly.

Stop blaming the individuals, start improving the system. It has worked in a lot of industries, most notably the airline industry.

  13. I might at some point muster the courage to respond to @Luminara 's long and thoughtful response. Thank you. Unfortunately I have a lot of other things going on in my life.

In the mean time I will just post a few more videos from NotJustBikes, as he keeps making awesome videos about the comparison between Dutch and North American infrastructure.

    Cheers.

  14. I usually watch a person play a bit of a game before I buy it myself.

I also watch some Youtubers/Twich streamers off and on, whenever they are playing a game that interest me, or there is a new release/DLC. These are usually people much more skilled at the game than I am, where I hope to learn something, get some inspiration, or find the way they tell stories/play the game interesting.

    A few examples:

DDRJake: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8b4hCq0aHQbl0v2il0tR_A  Especially his Paradox content. He also has unwatchable stuff, but some of his games are the best strategy gameplay I have ever seen. A quarter of a million people have watched his world conquest as Ryukyu/Okinawa, all 68 hours of it.

Etho: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFKDEp9si4RmHFWJW1vYsMA  Because he is just the best Canadian in the world.

The Mighty Jingles:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpnjlvS2zxhbNJuGNo_TxkQ  For his humour.

Quill18:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbx1TZgxfIauUZyPuBzEwZg  For the hats, inspiration and variation.

I am not sure if Kruggsmash counts: https://www.youtube.com/user/kruggsmash   But his stories in Dwarf Fortress are very good.
