  1. For my Interface slot, I'm thinking about either Reactive or Degenerative, would one or the other be better? And is it better to focus on the Radial or the Core branch?

For my Hybrid slot, I'm currently trying Support. Is that an acceptable choice? it seemed to have a nice mix of defensive and offensive bonuses.

  2. I am still trying to parse all the advice.

I haven't done all 50+ content yet, but so far I have mostly noticed that I'm having some trouble with some confuse and fear effects, where Regeneration does not provide a lot of protection. I was wondering if the bonuses from Clarion were significant enough for this to be an option, or that Barrier is overall a better idea to just buff my defence and resistances.

Am I correct in thinking that the high Protection values that Clarion provides, are only for a few seconds, and the much longer lower protection values do not stack with protection I have from other powers/sources, but only the highest applies?

Or is the +RechargeTime of Ageless so good, that with it, my Moment of Glory becomes better? I'm still not really convinced about Ageless, compared to Clarion or Barrier. I don't seem to have any Endurance problems so far.

And how do these interact with diminishing returns (ED?)

So far I haven't changed my build, is there a way to compare builds in Mid's ? I have looked at @Arklide's build, but I find it hard to compare.

In general I'm not a huge fan of Kick/Tough/Weave, even though I understand that those probably give the most tanky option. I'm ok with not being able to tank everything, Regeneration is not really the kind of power where you can just jump into the middle of any large group and expect to survive. So far I haven't focused on making this build the best main tank, that's also why I don't have Taunt. I use Cryonic Judgement and Energy torrent a lot as a first attack to spread the initial damage spike, and then I usually survive.

I will probably make a very tanky character at some point. I like this one because it is a mix of melee, ranged, reasonable survivability, and a lot of different abilities I can chain together. There are few powers that I don't end up using almost every cooldown, except Revive and Laser Beam Eyes (even though that is my favourite power on this character, having a fast ranged attack on a melee character helps a lot, if only to kill purse thieves in Atlas).

😞 This will teach me to spread my wealth around a bit. All my toons are on Reunion.  *sniffle*

so far it has been good, I've only played on Reunion, and it has been more stable than the old Union back in 2010-12.

Now is a good opportunity to check out another shard until Reunion comes back up.  Torchbearer has a very sizable European player base.

Yeah, I used to do that as well, but so far Reunion has been very stable.

Have you managed to find out what your graphics card is yet?

If you don't have one then that's probably the problem. CoH's graphics are old but, you still shouldn't be using an onboard graphics chip. Especially on a laptop.

That CPU does have Intel® HD Graphics 610 integrated graphics. The OP says he has ran it on 3 different computers, maybe he can say what the specs of the other computers are?

His computer seems to be quite low end to play this game. Even my computer from 2007 beats those specs. This seems to be a very low end machine to try to play this game.

What resolution are you trying to play the game at?

So far I have seen the occasional drop in FPS in CoH, no matter which system I run, but it is usually just for an instant, more a stutter than a real slowdown.

Assuming that OP is running on the HD610, then how much of the RAM has been reserved for the videocard? And what version of Windows? To me it sounds like the GPU is maybe running out of video memory and unable to load all the textures. This would then indeed make it wait for the storage constantly, and drop CPU and GPU usage.

  5. I could not find a list on this forum of regular server wide events that get organized.

So I decided to make one.

There are 2 that I am aware of:

    1. Saturday evening 20:00/20:30 ? CET Hamidon raids, both Hero and Villain side one after the other.
    2. Sunday 20:00:20:30 ? CET  Rikti Mothership raid.

    Do people know any others?

Congrats on your first 50! Love the inspiration. Bad news is the build you posted would fold very quickly in serious endgame content. Sadly regen needs *a lot* of help to hold it's own at high levels so you can still feel super. Especially when you dont have allies at your back. You need some degree of defense and resistance bc regen just cannot keep up otherwise. But all is not lost! I modified my own regen brute for ya to keep it as close to your theme as possible and still save the day with plenty of gusto.

One of regen's bigger flaws is the severe lack of debuff resistance/protection. Ageless Radial Destiny is the perfect for you bc it offers recharge and debuff res. This also lets you use a different alpha bc the alpha incarnate is treated as an enhancement bonus, so any procs in your attacks are getting their chances to go off drastically lowered using spiritual. Tho at first glance spiritual is a great option, but we can do better. Vigor will ensure you have maximum accuracy vs +4 mobs, give you even more HP/regen (with it you'll be camping at HP cap regenerating over 100hp/sec just standing around), and a little endurance reductions never hurts when running street justice.

Interface and hybrid can be largely to taste and preference. Degenerative and reactive are excellent damage boosters if you solo a lot. But you have some flexibility. Running any that dont have a dmg component is usually just a waste of potential. The others have debuffs you would barely notice to be honest. I went assault radial bc I often run with kins or nature toons who are already buffing my damage, so I get more bang for buck running the doublehit over the +dmg. If you wanna embrace full bulk mode the melee hybrids are amazing.

Lucent Arklide: Level 50 Magic Brute
    Primary Power Set: Street Justice
    Secondary Power Set: Regeneration
    Power Pool: Flight
    Power Pool: Fighting
    Power Pool: Speed
    Ancillary Pool: Energy Mastery

Thank you for your reply. I will look at the build you propose in detail when I am at a computer with MIDs.

I understand that because of the math and scaling mechanics, Regen cannot handle high amounts of incoming damage as well as a defense/resistance based build. I haven't felt weak though. I just know that I'm not as easily to be able to be a primary tank as some other power sets as the Regen math results in a quite sudden drop off from "you're fine" to "face plant", so you have to more actively manage and react to the damage coming in.

Can you tell me what content you think I would struggle with, I don't feel like I have had a lot of issues so far, but there are plenty of things I haven't done yet.

I have a bit of trouble understanding the rest of your reply.

    1. I had so far disregarded Ageless, as I don't seem to have any problem with my Endurance or recovery, and that seems to be a large part of it. I find it very hard to find any real numbers on what these Incarnate powers do, and how significant they are. I've already considered looking at the C++ code itself. How much debuff resistance does it give?
    2. In a similar vein, I have no idea how much +Def and +Res that Barrier actually gives me.
    3. I don't understand your comment about "the alpha incarnate is treated as an enhancement bonus, so any procs in your attacks are getting their chances to go off drastically lowered using spiritual".
    4. You state "Vigor will ensure you have maximum accuracy vs +4 mobs, give you even more HP/regen".  I don't understand how accuracy gives regen, and I thought that toHit would be more valuable than accuracy?
    5. I thought Vigor doesn't do a lot for me, as it boosts heal, not regen. The recharge of spiritual seems to do more for me a it allows me to heal more often, but also keeps op the benefits of my click powers a much larger part of my time.
    6. I don't seem to have any endurance problems with my current build, unless I get hit with a hefty endurance debuff, which has been very rare up to this point.
    7. I have trouble understanding the description of the Hybrid Melee. I don't know what it means with "The Core branch of this tree front-loads some of its maximum buff value as the tree is climbed" and get confused with the table in the wiki https://hcwiki.cityofheroes.dev/wiki/Hybrid_Slot_Abilities
    8. Which export markup opotion do you have to use to get the nice colours?

I might have further questions after I studied your build in MIDs.

    Thank you.

Then why cant you just upgrade your powers without having to over spend i spent almost all my cash just trying to upgrade my powers and their still weak.

This sounds like you are using Dual/Single Origin enhancements in your powers, and upgrade them as you level.

This is very costly, and if this is your first/only/highest level character, you are probably not having the money for it.

Any character can be played solo, but you have one of the hardest. Secondly, things get a lot easier if you have money in this game, as you can buy things like better enhancements, craft things, and buy temporary powers and inspirations. But you will not get a lot of money as you level, until you get really high level.

I would suggest first levelling something easy, and then use the money you get on that character to help your other character.

Go play a Brute or a Sentinel for a while. Those are much better beginner characters. Learn to craft "Invention" enhancements, and what (attuned) enhancement sets can do for you. Learn how to craft and sell on the Auction House to make more money.

Ask advice for all these things in game and on the forums. Don't be afraid, most people are very friendly if you are polite.

I would advise against changes to the game that can be solved with a tutorial. Regen is fine. If players don't like the reactive nature of it, they can play Willpower.

That said, if you're looking to tweak things, then I suggest:

    • Adding [more/some] -recovery, -end, -recharge, and -regen resist.
    • Have the heals activate at the start of the animation.
    • Cut the MoG animation in half.
    • Have the MoG Animation Time Before Effect the same duration as the Animation Time.
    • Have MoG and Resilience give resist to all.

I get that minor tweaks aren't sexy/exciting to dream up and implement. But there's no real need for anything beyond this.

The only power it's safe to really play with is Revive. Maybe doing something like giving it a 0s recharge, removing the 15s untouchable, and having it restore lost toggles, and have it remove a deaths-worth of XP debt could be the way to go? It would suit, thematically. (Revive is a big part of Wolverine's HPS chain.) And I like the idea that regen does not experience death the same way the other armor sets do. It would reward the "knife's edge" playstyle by making death less of a burden.

I like the direction you're thinking.

I like the resists. One of the fights I have had the most difficulty with, is one that gave me -50% Endurance.

I like the MoG animation, but it makes it hard to time correctly, together with it's short duration. I don't know the details well enough, but keeping the animation would be nice.

The interesting animations is one of the things that make CoH fun to me. I will pick powers based on what looks cool, although Titan Weapons is pushing my patience.

I like the 15s untouchable, It allows for some interesting choices, and don't mind the cooldown on Revive. Some toggles are really slow to activate though. I have Integration, Focussed Accuracy, Manoeuvrers, but FA seems to be much slower than the other two? This means that it takes quite a while before you can rejoin the fight.

I would like to see it not have XP debt. I end up using it quite often when fighting enemies I don't know, before I am able to figure out which enemies I need Instant Healing and Dull Pain against.

I will stay away from discussing the math in this tread for now, as that needs a much clearer head and attention to detail. I do have the feeling that people are trying to argue based on fixed values, with a lot of assumptions, where the dependency on underlying values is a function and would be better represented with a graph or something. Like a graph of survivability vs. incoming dps.

I also don't know the damage and hit calculation mechanics well enough to understand if one mob doing 100 dps, or 10 mobs doing 10 dps, makes a difference. I think there are some things like the auto-hit and miss {?} mechanics that might make the math more complicated?

To me it seems that Regen is mostly fine, but might lack especially in its ability to tank large groups because of the way it (doesn't) scale.

Given that CoH is more focussed on making characters interesting to play than trying to balance everything, I'm quite fine with that.

I left World of Warcraft for CoH, because it was simplifying and reducing the complexity in the name of (PvP) balance.

I used to play Druid in WoW, so I seem to like "HP sponge" type tanks.

  9. Hi,

I finally got my first character to level 50, where I only managed 49 back on live. So this is my first attampt at understanding the Incarnate system.

I think I have a resonable handle on how the trees work, and how to make the things.

The character is a vaguely Kryptonian inspired flying brick.

For my Alpha slot I'm working towards the Spiritual Total Radial Revamp, as that seems to be the best option for this build.

For the Justice slot I'm working towards some form of the Cyonic abilities for thematic reasons (Kryptonian Ice Breath)

For the Lore slot, I'm working towards Carnival Partial Core Improved Ally for similar thematic reasons.

But I was wondering what the best choices would be for my Destiny, Interface and Hybrid slots.

    • Any advice on those would be welcome.
    • Any information/maths/numbers on what the powers do exactly would also be welcome.
    • If you think I made any stupid errors in my build, I'm happy to have those pointed out to me, this is largely a build I copied from the Paragon forums 10 years ago.

I am wondering if I should go for even more regeneration, with things like Hybrid Melee, or that this would be overkill/diminishing returns, and I'm better of with some +damage abilities or so. I'm also wondering if Barrier is any use to me.

I have looked at places like https://hcwiki.cityofheroes.dev/wiki/Destiny_Slot_Abilities , but for example the Barrier power doesn't say how much +defence and +resistance it gives. It could interleave very nicely with my Moment of Glory, or it could be overkill given my current numbers and maybe Rebirth is better?

    Thanks.

  10. I have just got my first character ever to level 50 on my own.

It's a Street Justice/Regen Brute, and I have found it a lot of fun to play over the last year.

But my opinion isn't based on years of experience.

I like having to manage the active clicks. I sometimes wished I got a little more time to react, especially if you have something else queued up first.

I struggle most with big alpha attacks at the start of a combat, either because I jump into a group, or a boss with a big opener.

Regen has a strong "you're fine, oh now you're (almost) dead" mechanic, but that's inherent to the mathematics. Regen gives you a certain fixed level of sustain, and anything above that will just kill you. Your "armor" does not scale with the number of attacks you receive, while for defence/resist it does. Those will mitigate more damage, if more damage is comes in, while Regen always mitigates the same amount of damage. Not even the active player mechanics really change that fundamental mathematical issue.

More than other armor sets, I need to manage how much damage is coming in, as my mitigation does not scale. I think those mathematics are impossible to balance between armor sets. I think it is for players to build around it, like having abilities that slow, known down, disorient, etc.

Regen is never going to be as balanced as a defence or resistance based armor. It just doesn't have enough mechanics that scale with incoming damage/number of attackers. But as long as it is fun, and people are playing it, then I don't think it needs much work.

  11. Personally, I would only make the Vault account wide.

At least, I find that I currently do not use it, because it is per character.

I think it would be more useful as an account wide store, to transfer stuff between characters.

It would be perfect if we could store recipes in it as well then.

Salvage and enhancements are well enough done through the base, and I just store Inf in the mail.

  12. Hmm, if both are laptops, then it's not very likely to be an issue with incompatible hardware.

It is normal for the "camera" to occasionally "bump" through the walls/ceiling which could create something like you describe.

  13. Nice idea.

Me and a friend would each be interested in these badges on our respective badge hunter characters.

I think we can be available most evening hours CET/UK time, preferably on Friday or Saturday, if we know well enough in advance.

    @RogerWilco in game.

We do not have any "extra" accounts atm.

Just keep in mind, folks that may be streaming the game * will NOT be asking everyone who might be in the camera frame for "permission" to film them but that does NOT mean they are invading anyone's privacy as you might be controlling a character in the background but YOU are NOT in the background. It is not at all the same as someone walking down the street recording random strangers. Anyway, people streaming or recording is not going to impact anyone who is not interested in the streaming stuff (except that it *might* bring a few people back to CoH). This is a very good, healthy change for Homecoming.

*= even old people like me stream games and stuff these days, just check out Shirley Curry if you want to see a REAL old timer playing! Streaming and making videos of hobbies is not just for youngsters.  In fact, as a (new) streamer, my whole pitch is built around bringing older gamers BACK into the fun! Im 54 and a LOT of my friends find themselves "empty nesters" and bored with gardening and not ready for bird watching but totally intimidated by "modern gaming" and who can blame them? My "mission" is to reach out to folks around my age and older and show them gaming is still here for us, gaming is for everybody, you dont have to spend thousands of dollars to play, you dont have to play hyper violent games, etc. Don't reject streamers out of hand just because you *think* only young people do it. Streamers come in all ages, races, genders, political persuasions, etc.

Personally, I like The Mighty Jingles:

He is a retired Navy guy with a very British sense of humour.

Well, tiny difference in that none of those analogies refer to people that willfully and repeatedly record others without either their knowledge or consent. But I digress.

    Fair point.

I think you could have an interesting discussion on to what extent an MMO can be considered a public space, like a park or street, or even a sports stadium.

The EU privacy regulation is very strict, but make exceptions for spaces where people "can be expected" to be recorded, like on public streets and newsworthy events.

I can see an argument that a game is not a public space, and you could have some expectation of privacy, but I can also see the opposite argument.

I don't know of any legal opinions on the matter.

But some streamers are more like the people who share dashcam videos, than a performer or athlete, although even there, you might see shots of the audience and passers by.

Or maybe something like what this guy does, with his tours of London:

For most streamers I watch, this is not really an issue, as they play single player, or with other streamers on the same server.

But for some games it is an issue, I think for player-vs-player games even more so than for the "make believe" MMO type that CoH is.

For example, the content of The Mighty Jingles, whom I have linked above, nearly always shows fellow players, and he often comments on them.

Some of his series are even mostly comments on other players, like his The Good, The Bad, The Ugly series:

I think even content like this is fairly "normal" on Youtube and Twitch, and it seems to be accepted with few problems. And that game has a PEGI 7 rating, so there could be children playing it.

Personally, I don't have a problem, as long as no information is shown that can identify a real world person. But that might rely on people not using their real name in a game.

I know some online kids games do not even allow you to freely pick a name, your own or otherwise, but only from a select list, just to avoid privacy problems.

Possibly a silly question, but if you open the dropdown menu at the bottom right of the map, do you have the option to see team mates selected?  I've accidentally unselected various map icons many times over the years.

    Yes, that was the problem.

    Thanks!

Lol. I really appreciate good old fashioned curmudgeonliness! I confess to being a bit mystified by the whole streaming thing myself but I can't really see how this is going to change things much for me either way. If nothing else at least this will stop people moaning about not being able to stream so that's a net positive I guess?

I usually compare streaming and various forms of "Let's Play"s to things like watching a sports match, theatre performance or cooking show on TV. It is basically a different way to do the same thing. I only watch 2 streamers, and often not at the time they stream but only a recorded version, just because they are very, very skilled at what they do.

There are a lot of people trying, who don't have the skills, but that is just true for the internet in general, as the bar to entry is much lower than for TV. It's like watching a local street performer, or some kids soccer game, much smaller audience, but a few have a reason to come and watch.

I hugely applaud this news. Thanks Homecoming Team!

    This is awesome.

  17. Black Shroud Dimension

Are you familiar wiht the Praetorian version of Luminary? She calls herself Nightstar, and she's a self-aware robot like Siege, only she seems a little bit crazy. She believes her power comes from a place called 'the Black Shroud', another dimension that she recently gained access to.

A small typo in the mission from Maria Jenkins to take down Nightstar. Might be the final mission in her story line?

    Should be "with"

Honestly, it's not looking good at all for gaming on Macs as Elder Scrolls Online will not support new Macs and Guild Wars 2 just announced the end of all Mac support completely.

In addition, from what I've been hearing elsewhere, Rosetta 2 is a stopgap measure that is only expected to be supported for a couple of years. :classic_mellow:

Ever since Apple started with Metal, more and more PC game developers have been abandoning the platform. Gaming on Mac was quite good 2007-2017, but has been steadily getting worse since then. It is why I bought my first Windows machine in over a decade.

I have also been thoroughly unimpressed with a lot of their more recent hardware choices. I am typing this on a 2018 Macboook Pro 15", and the keyboard, Touch Bar and TouchID are horrible, the USB-C only/Thunderbolt3 is either annoying, or sometimes unworkable, I carry a minimum of 6 dongles around.

But it is good to see that people got the game running on the M1. Impressive. That gives me hope for when I need another Mac(book).
