Star Wars: Andor on D+

On this day, 44 years ago, one of the most (in)famous entries to the scifi canon dropped out of hyperspace... and then vanished again, its memory carried on only through word of mouth and the most dedicated of nerd archivists. It had very little to do with Lucas, and was instead created by CBS's Saturday night variety teams, as a thinly-veiled Thanksgiving event. It also includes musical segments and "comedy", including guest stars like Bea Arthur and Harvey Korman. It is, for the most part, exactly as bad as it sounds. According to Wikipedia, Carrie demanded one of the very few remaining official copies in exchange for recording DVD commentaries, so that she could show it at parties. (Especially when she wanted people to leave). But there are a few gems in this trash compactor of a show: Carrie Fisher sings! The song's not great, but Space Mom had pipes. Pretty decent track from Jefferson Starship The Tale Of The Faithful Wookie: a Nelvana-made cartoon short about Chewie trying to find a cure for Han, who's contracted a deadly virus, and includes the very first canon appearance of everyone's favourite bounty hunter scum. (If you don't fancy suffering through the whole thing to get to that, this is the only part of the Special released "officially", on D+.)

Star Wars: Andor on D+

Prepare for a hail of bullets. -
Been reading tributes from his assorted cast members - Hamill, Tara and Grey in particular… plus Lynda Carter and others from around the nerd world. But I’d like to just mention that: a) he was genuinely a good bloke b) he enjoyed the #!?@ out of being Batman.

Star Wars: Andor on D+

I still don't get why they couldn't build it on one of those islands. Alcatraz had all of those benefits without actually needing to block out and pump out several million metric tonnes of water to put it below the surface. Hell, if you want to build an island, that's an awful lot easier. On with the bulletage: More fun with architecture. Series designer Luke Hull has a bit of a tease over here. There were seven prison blocks. Yep, he's OCD. What they were making is significant, and may be revealed... later. It might even pay off this series. There's even tie-in merch. -

Seems so. There are five Raft type structures visible in this screenshot (though, given the OCD nature of architects, would bet there's actually seven). BTW. Why, in the name of the Great Bird Of The Galaxy, do Imps insist on building their fancy stuff underwater? Massive unnecessary engineering challenges, just for Rule Of Cool false perception of security. Industrial park in Reading / Scranton / Leopardstown / De Kalb would have been perfectly fine. And, to be honest, feel more or less the same. Haven't caught up with this week's show yet, but for those of you still braving the hellscape of Twitter, there is nothin' but love out there for Andy Serkis. Oh, and for architecture nerds / RPG folks / etc, here's the overhead plan. -

Still wondering what's happening with Anansi Boys. Neil said in June that primary shoots and grading were done - but that post-production was going to take until June 2023... ...the hell is that boy cooking up? I guess Amazon aren't averse to major league SFX budgets these days, but it's only six standard-length episodes. -

Small bit of news today: Andor S2 starts filming at Pinewood on Nov 21. Tom Bissell jumps from writing games (Gears of War) to writing 3 episodes. Action will wind up on Yavin and bring together more of the Rogue Crew Casting has deliberately been kept secret to avoid spoiling who makes it out of S1 - with the implication Denise, Kyle or even Stellan might not make it… -

Ali Plumb irritates me a little from being just a touch too deferential, but does seem to get some great quotes out of people. Similarly, whether Graham Norton's getting people drunk on his main shows or talking plainer on the, er, straighter radio interviews, he always gets good anecdotes. Some of it clearly prepped, not all of it... I had a work friend who used to describe themselves to Americans as "bald... English... posh... basically, supervillain". We can roll with that. It's not like we haven't got form. And yes, Americans do love it when I go cut-glass RP on them when giving orders. (One, like Syril, just a little too much.) Whovian/meeja luvvie side note: since the reboot, and particularly since the formation of the mighty Jane & Julie's Bad Wolf Productions, Who and their other shows (Dark Materials, Industry) have been giving a lot of people a lot of work. Slightly surprised they weren't in on Andor, but since they're co-owned by Sony now maybe there was some friction. But there's a hella decent talent pool going in the UK now. With the Disney co-production deal on Who there's going to be even more money to spread around: the House of Mouse has promised to be largely hands-off, but who knows how long that's gonna last. I'm hoping Dedra has a proper demat/incinerator on her bins or Syril's going to have been through those. But I suspect you're right, it's some kind of hate-manifesto and pile of gleaned evidence against Cassian. Mixed with doodles of Dedra with lovehearts and maybe slightly higher boots. And Denise wasn't wholly careful through the whole interview, but then again she's an Imp and not to be trusted. Also, Stellan sounds like an absolute laugh to work with. Either that, or he likes the boots too... well, suppose he is Swedish and all. -

Spoilers for spoilers... Non-spoiler notes: there's an interview with Tony Gilroy and co with some good stuff on it that's just come up. And, indeed, all power to Nina Gold for casting 190 speaking roles for the first half of the series. Mostly with Brits, because locations, and probably price. BTW, if you want to see more of Alex Lawther/Nemik (the manifesto kid), have a look for The End Of The F***ing World. One other thing, which I'm slightly dreading asking. What exactly is in Syril's "private box" that he's annoyed about his mother seeing? (And how did an incel eating Cap'n Thrawny's Kosmic Krunch while being yelled at about his career prospects become some of the most compelling sci-fi in years? Oh, right. Acting.) -
The Sandman on Netflix
ThaOGDreamWeaver replied to ThaOGDreamWeaver's topic in Comic, Hero & Villain Culture
FYI: after much pointless speculation by Very Online people, Sandman has been renewed for season 2. And while there’s a lot to be said for art and such, or people yapping about new models of entertainment, the reason it’s back is it kept butts on seats, just like movies and tv have for years. Per Deadline… "The Sandman", which launched at the start of August, was watched for 69.5M hours in its first week, doubling this in its second to 127.5M, scoring 77.2M in its third week and getting 53.8M in its fourth. Aside from Netflix’s annoying habit of reporting streaming hours without the number of viewers, that’s still an awful lot of folks - and the kind of big bump in the second week from word of mouth studios kill for. -
