srmalloy Posted September 22, 2019 Posted September 22, 2019 I was doing the "Cure the Lost" mission from Montague Castaneda, and I found a Headman Blaster with a bunch of random Scroungers gathered around him. When I cured the Headman, each of the scroungers, in unison like some Lost precision drill team, whipped out a shotgun and shot the (cured) civilian. I was wearing earphones to reduce spillover noise, but even with the volume turned down, having eight shotgun blast sound effects playing simultaneously made an absurdly-loud blast that actually hurt. I've had loosely-similar things happen before, where two or three minions will all pull out the same weapon and shoot simultaneously, and the sound effect is louder, but when you stack eight sufficiently-sharp sounds, it gets loud enough to be painful. Can we get a limit on the number of simultaneous identical sound effects that contribute to the volume the sound effect is played at? 3
nihilii Posted September 22, 2019 Posted September 22, 2019 (edited) This is the kind of suggestion that is so obvious in hindsight it makes you wonder why we all live with the annoyance. Forget about 30 pages Rage debates, my own beef with SS is that footstomping a crowd melts my own eardrums unless I turn down the volume to half of the usual value. Black Zot Posted September 22, 2019 Posted September 22, 2019 I'm not sure what aggravates me more, the snowballing sound effects or the people that get together to shout down this suggestion every time someone brings it up.
Steampunkette Posted September 22, 2019 Posted September 22, 2019 At this point I play with my CoH Volume at 8 while the rest of my computer is at 100. Though part of that is CoH is -shockingly- loud. Like... I'm -stunned- at how loud it is in relation to other programs. This suggestion isn't a bad idea, on it's face, but it might be easier just to flatly reduce the volume of some of the louder sounds in the game... Particularly Shotguns and Teleport. Also most of Gravity is surprisingly up there. 1

Any other game on my machine would be inaudible at those settings, but CoH STILL forces me to turn my speaker down as well.

Not to mention that "level up" sound is apparently unaffected by any volume setting I can find. Like, there's "Sound Effect Volume", "Music Volume" and "Voiceover Volume", but no "Master Volume". So I'll be cruising through a mission and sound levels are just where I like them, and then I'll level up and the noise blows my head off.
