Best of Both - Blood Widower Fortunado Build

Recommended Posts

Hello Gulbasaur, I appreciate the love and attention you put into this build. I just have one question regarding mind link. I noticed on your Mids build (version 4) the set of reactive defenses is giving a blanket increase of defenses by 25.2% however in game I am only seeing an increase of 15.75%. am I missing something?

Appreciate the feedback

Hi and thanks!

In game, it's 15ish%. I'm not at my computer with Mids on at the moment but there are some errors that crop up in Mids. One thing that springs to mind is that Stealth/Hide values are the higher "out of combat" values, unless you change something in the settings - could it be that and not Mind Link?

What are the good incarnate powers for this build?

Hi - my selection is

  • Musculature Alpha (more damage - none of the others really solved a problem so more damage felt the way to go),
  • Ion Judgement (I think Ion has the a largest target cap, but honestly I went with it because it I like the visual effects),
  • Degenerative Interface (toxic damage for thematic reasons, but also the -MaxHP debuff is quite significant against AVs),
  • Arachnos Lore (thematic reasons - I went for the two DPS pets as I didn't think the support one was useful enough to keep),
  • Rebirth Destiny (only one I really saw any value in - endurance isn't enough of a problem to worry about and I don't need mezz protection or more defence/resistance) and
  • Assault Hybrid (I used the Melee resistance one for a while but decided I probably didn't really need it - the assault Double Hit one feels like I'm getting more out of it).

Not saying they're perfect, but they do the job really well.

Hi Gulbasaur! I wanted to thank you for putting this guide together, it's really helped me.

I've been leveling Spider Georg, now level 43, with v4 of this build with a couple of changes and I'm having a lot of fun so far. Georg is my highest-level character now, and on live I'd never played a VEAT at all. Here are the changes I've made, for leveling purposes in case anyone else out there is curious about leveling like this:

Dropped Strike, took Combat Training: Offensive -- I feel like I have enough attacks for an attack chain, maybe because redraw doesn't bug me that much, and the +accuracy is really nice while getting to 50

Took Mental Blast instead of Telekinetic Blast -- on teams, I didn't like the knockback, felt like I might annoy people with it. Also four-slotted with Tempest, hoping the End Drain might help with leveling end woes

Stamina -- Three-slotted, again with end woes; Performance Shifter Chance for +End + 2 regular End Mods. Will probably drop the 2 End Mods when I respec at 50, now that I have Health slotted out.

Travel power -- Personal preference here, I like Super Speed + Stealth IO. On top of Mask Presence, it makes it really easy to stealth missions if I want to, and I like SS+CJ as a travel power.

Total Domination -- Dropped this, took Tactical Training: Assault earlier. I might swap it in at 50 to give it a try, but I'm not a real fan of the long cooldown aoe holds.

As for IO sets, I've been able to afford to buy as I level, without a character already at level 50 to bankroll me (thanks to people who wrote guides on how to make inf from merits on top of this being a relatively cheap build).

Any recommendations from anybody on what powers to consider taking if I don't take Total Domination, Recall Friend, or Provoke? I'm still in the process of figuring out what Spider Georg will look like at 50, but it will be pretty close to your posted build, so thank you again.

I've been playing with TT: Vengeance recently and I kinda love it, but that's mostly because my fortunata has spent the bulk of his time running tips in Atlas with lowbies. When someone goes down, it's a big heal and some more defence to cover things. Fortunatas have such a solid toolkit to begin with that you really can pick up what you want.

Glad you're enjoying the build and finding it helpful!

Run my Widow as a dual build, with one focusing on AoE/range and the other focusing on the melee. Generally I prefer to run with the (PB)AoE build for ease in targeting, with the only issue being that the single target ranged attacks can be slow against some targets (if they resist Psi), if it ever becomes a real problem Weaken Resolve starts to get used. The first two attacks could be swapped into the Training pool if there is a desire to mix things up. The Patron pool was chosen to have a different type of damage and more AoE.

I think it is interesting to compare the different approaches to slotting between Gulbasaur and myself. I generally tried to avoid going past the point of diminishing-(ED)-returns and opted for fewer set bonuses (from Defense) but I think the builds are comparible: The builds have similar defenses with some mix/match in the resists. You can also probably imagine how this build leverages the Presence pool AoE and self-buff.

I don't run her with either Mind Link (~15 seconds of perma) or Combat Jumping except in particularly dangerous situations. AoE is the only positional defense below the (non-Incarnate) softcap with neither power running.

Weaken Resolve took a bit of a hit with the recent Tanker fixes, so I am sometime tempted to swap in Hasten or TT:Assault at lvl 47 instead. I'm reasonably certain that 2 50(+5) recharge IO in Hasten would be perma without +Recharge procs or Incarnate consideration. Hasten would be my go-to choice, as it makes Mind Link perma, brings Unstoppable down by about 30 seconds, and improves the recharge of Psychic Wail by about 10 seconds. Dropping Weaken Resolve would also allow the Sorcery pool's Mystic Flight to come into play.

If a player wants to leverage some of my build ideas, I have no issues. I know that the Presence Pool isn't for everybody but I LOVE the PBAoE Invoke Panic and Unrelenting on this build. I had Total Domination at some point, but with the intent to have Unrelenting and the relatively fast kill times, the PBAoE fear was a better fit (especially for the choice of what level to have the power). Single-target Confuse at level 28 isn't actively used that often, but I LOVE those set bonuses. Even though I use Aura of Confusion more often, I kept the slots in the single-target because the Contagious Confusion Proc works better as a concept in the single-target power. If you want more raw damage, replacing Confuse with Lunge (ST) or Psionic Tornado (AoE) would be easy swaps.

(forgive the formatting weirdness)

Awesome thead Gulbasaur! I've been watching this thread progress for a long time.

This seemed like a good place to ask this:

Do you, or does anyone remember the slash command to switch builds? I forgot it and it's driving me nuts trying to remember.

I have a lvl 50 NW that I love and I just started leveling a Fort for funsies (and also to get proper combat experience through the levels on a Fort). However, I still want to make my NW the multi-build beast of the two. Thanks guys!

Here are the macros I use (1 on each build) to change builds and costumes. The slash command is /select_build to change builds, and /cce to change costumes with an emote.

/macro_image "AlignmentPower_FearIncarnate" "1st build" "select_build 1$$cce 2 CCLightMagic"
/macro_image "AlignmentPower_Duplicity" "2nd Build" "select_build 2$$cce 1 CCLightMagic"

IIRC the builds are numbered 1, 2, 3 but the costume slots start 0, 1, 2....

My Fortunata costume is in Slot 1 (not slot 0) with Build 2.

My Widow costume is in Slot 2 using Build 1.

I didn't plan for this... it's just that I started with a female body (costume slot 0) but that's the one I wanted to have the Widow powers and I decided to make that a male figure... so that is how it got costume slot 2, because I had already redisgned the woman (slot 1) and was  keeping the original costume in slot 0, so costume slot 1 became the Fortunata.

EDIT: lots of editing to try to clarify the odd situation with my particular costume situation.

If I wanted to make a macro for just a build change, how would I form it?

The simplest is to have two macros, one to select each build. They should be:

/macro_image "AlignmentPower_FearIncarnate" "1st build" "select_build 1"
/macro_image "AlignmentPower_Duplicity" "2nd Build" "select_build 2"

When you change builds, the game loads a different set of tray layouts. Just make sure you have the macro to select build 2 in the trays for build 1 and vice versa.

You could try to bind which rotates between two text files, where each file changes the meaning of the bind to select the other build. I don't recommend this over using macros: There is a minimum time you have to wait to change builds, but if you hit the bound key you will get out of the cycle. This may not be a big deal, but when you change builds, all (*1) of your powers have to recharge and your toggles drop. IIRC, you also have to reset your 'auto' power (if you use one).

(*1) I know that this includes all your temp/prestige powers like Assemble the Team, Team Transport. I honestly can't recall if it affects the Incarnate powers. The other thing I can't recall about Incarnate powers is if you can have different Incarnate powers slotted in the different builds. I do know that all builds have access to all the same Incarnate powers, so you don't have to craft new ones for the new build... which makes me think that the different builds only 'restart' with those Incarnate abilities actually slotted.

Hello Gulbasaur!  I have faithfully reproduced your Fortunado for my widow, Tia'mat, and have had very good performance from her.

I am, however, a new returnee to the game and fear I am not making the best use of her abilities in SFs.

What is the standard rotation you use and plan of attack?

Hello! Please don't think you have to copy it for it to work - fortunatas are such a solid base to work with that they're quite flexible. @tidge gives a lot of consistently good advice about widows so check out his/her builds too. But yeah - I stumbled onto something fairly awesome with my fortunado build if I do say so myself.

8 hours ago, MagusGerhardt said:

Erk. Planning isn't really my strong suit. My rotation is more or less Spin if it's up, then the four ST melee attacks on in a moderately coherent rotation and then psi wail and tornado as and when I feel like it.

Ranged damage is primarily AoE and utility, with a hold, a knockdown and a fear. It does good enough damage, though.

I fully admit this build has slightly too many attacks, but on the other hand it has separate ranged and melee attack chains so can be entirely one or the other as needed.

Fortunata support is almost entirely passive - by being on the team, you are making everyone more efficient. Mind Link is really, really powerful so toss it out when it pops up but don't worry too much if you miss anyone. Don't overlook that - you're keeping people alive and helping them hit better just by standing near them looking glorious.

With task/strike forces, it mostly depends on three things:

  1. Level: Generally, keep up any toggles you've got and use Mind Link when it comes up. I tend to open with Psi Scream for the fear proc then go into melee range and start stabbing away, throwing around range and using the hold when I need to. If I'm at a level where I can use confuse, I try to get it on support-types first and then lieutenants. Ritki guardians can give you some decent buffs and I'd rather they be on me than other ritki. At higher levels, I try to keep the nukes in rotation, so I'll psi wail at one group, confuse the next and then use the incarnate AoE on the third, although if things get too spicy you can absolutely just use whatever to help you win.
  2. Psi-usefulness: Going up against robots? You've got a variable (20-60?%) psi resistance to go up against so get stabbing (but chuck some ranged AoEs around as well). In ITF the opposite is true as Kheldians in dwarf form have significant resistances to everything but psi. Dominate is not tagged a a ranged attack and does pure psi damage meaning it can bypass positional defences, so it's handy for things like MoGged Paragon Protectors.
  3. Am I tanking? If so, I try to be as noisy as possible using the taunt a lot and the double-debuff on most melee attacks usually generates enough threat to hold aggro unless I'm teamed with tankers or brutes. A lot of a fortunata's tanking ability come from being part blaster - if in doubt, AoE with luxurious abandon.

That doesn't seem very helpful, reading back. I'm sure you're doing better than you think you are. I find on fortunata a very, very active playstyle works best.

Thanks for the quick reply, Gulbasaur!

I've been hanging back most of the time and spamming the ranged abilities as they come up, but staying close enough to the action that my team buff aura effects, Total Domination, Psychic Wail and Aura of Confusion all have good coverage.   I've found myself rarely if ever using the melee abilities unless I pull aggro and someone wants me to murder them with sharp poisonous pointy things.

I've also gone beyond the Incarnates listed in the build; currently Tiamat has

Ion Core Final Judgement
Rebirth Radial Epiphany
Melee Core Embodiment
Musculature Core Paragon

No lore yet...because I'm indecisive and outta Incarnate mats.  XD

My pleasure! I keep an eye on this thread from time to time.

VEATs are much, much tankier than people assume so don't be afraid to go into melee. Fortunatas have scaling resists that kick in at 75% health so the hero planner doesn't really show how tough they are. I've tanked ITF and a lot of incarnate content as well as soloing a few AVs.

I went for Arachnos for thematic reasons, although they're probably not the most efficient.

Gulbasaur,

Thank you for your work and sharing it.  I am loving my slightly tweaked version of your build.  I do have one question though, why did you choose not to take Aim?

Aim --> Lunge for critical --> follow up --> Wail and another AoE  is obscenely good.

Thanks,

ATM

I love version 4, but i was wondering if there is a more expensive version of this build that uses more purples etc?

Err, not explicitly, but apart from the procs and a bit of recharge, I don't think the bonuses from purples are that great. They kind of solve problems that fortunatas don't have, if that makes sense?

I'm sure you could come up with something with some experimentation, though.

You can spend the inf on a second build for your Widow. @KaizenSoze has a thread about making an extra-tanky Widow, which sounds pretty fun. And if you find yourself accumulating too much inf again later on, you can make a third build for a purely ranged Fortunata, or some other exotic subvariant of your main.
