Hey folks!

 

Looking to get some feedback on my build. I was going to go and test it on Pineapple but...I feel like it's going to under perform. Any tweaks or recommendations would be very greatly appreciated!

 

Edit: I should mention some of the goals I'm looking to achieve are S/L soft cap or as close to as possible. Perma-Hasten and Perma-Dom.

I don't believe this is a perma-dom build but I'm not a perfect expert.

 

General stuff:

  • Overall: Drop any"Chance of -Recharge" procs. They are terrible and you won't need any extra -Recharge anyway, Ice has more than enough to exceed caps.
  • Block of Ice: Change to x4 Basilisk's Gaze. If you'll be using this as an attack add 1 Hami O Acc/Dam and one Damage IO from wherever
  • Fling Thorns: Probably should be x5 Positron's Blast (plus its cheap) for +recharge
  • Arctic Air: Swap to Coercise Persuasion x6
  • Assault: Drop completely, not worth the end cost
  • Ripper:/Thorn Barrage Why skip these? I'm not familiar with the powers but it looks like at least one would be a good place for a Force Feedback: Chance for +Recharge. Are the DPAs that bad?
  • Flash Freeze: If you must take this, put a Chance to Placate here so at least it has a chance to do something interesting. Won't matter much with Arctic Air running though, I guess., since AA cancels Placate (annoying 😛 ).

Thanks so much for the tips! I'll apply these changes and see where that puts me with regards to my goals 🙂

 

Ripper and Thorn Barrage specifically, I'm leaning more towards range and AoE's. If that makes sense?

He has permadom in that build. Barely. 

I normally recommend getting domination to perma before relying on hasten to give you that extra boost.

You capped hitpoints. Very impressive.

I normally gripe about why doms try to go for resist/def when you can literally stop an enemy in their traps, but overall you did a good job with those numbers. I would much rather you focus on increasing your damage because your build lacks any major burst damage. I guess for a team it wouldn't be noticeable. 

Your end usage is going to be horrible, Without factoring in attack chains you're going to eat a lot of end.

Two slotting stamina just for the increase movement speed is a waste when you have a travel power. just enhance the IO and you're good. 

Hasten only needs one slot. 

I take back what I said about capping hitpoints. You had hoarfrost on. Without it you're at 1200. Still decent tho good job.

 

Overall. If you're standing still not attacking, these numbers look great. In battle...good luck with endurance.

Dominators certainly have a lot of endurance to throw around, with Domination refilling your endurance bar every time it's activated. But, if I may, my Dom (Ice/Earth) has a total toggle cost of 1.5 endurance a second. It was rough leveling (and I have the 3 Health procs and the +end proc along with a standard end mod in Stamina), but when I got some 30 IOs things evened out. At 50 I lost a lot of end redux for set bonuses, but with the increased recharge giving me more Dominations it balanced out to around the same. It feels good, but if I miss a Domination I don't have nearly enough endurance to wait for the next cycle while in combat (which is why I have Frenzy, so I can force a Domination).

 

With SS off, which I would hope you'd have off in combat, you're still at nearly 2.0 end a second on toggles. That's going to be hell to level and considering how close I'm flying to the sun on my build, you may need Ageless just to keep yourself going.

I'm going to take another stab at the build as some of the suggestions mentioned first cause a slotting issue for me. I think I may take a look at some Ice/* builds to get some ideas because sadly, Thorny Assault builds are rather scarce.

 

I wouldn't be opposed to looking at/trying someone else's build if they feel so inclined to share or make an attempt at one 🙂

 

I'll be back with a revised build. Right now I fear this might not be as awesome as it sounded in my head LOL

I can make a good build for you. Are you trying to be a melee dom, all around dom, or range dom? 

Are you able to afford Purps and ATOs?

Do you want hasten in your build or no? I ask this because some builds I don't have hasten and I do just fine. Especially with the incarnate ability that offers recharge.

What travel power do you prefer?

I just finished a Version 2 of my build. I changed a bit around and went full out with the expensive stuff.

 

Edit: Sorry just saw this @mbre2006 I would love to see what you might come up with! Hasten isn't necessary, I just wanted it to help with perma-dom.  I am rather accustomed to Hasten in most of my builds though. Cost of IO's is not a concern. I can get what I need 🙂 Travel power doesn't make a huge difference to me. As long as I can get to where I need to get to quickly! Thanks! I'm not sure if I want to be full range or melee. I think ranged but melee capable if I have to get in close.

Couldn't decide on a final power choice and my slotting could possibly be rearranged if it were to benefit the build. Thoughts?

I made some potential revisions to the build, shared here:

 

A couple of comments overall:

  • Apocalypse is an expensive purple. Unless you desperately need the +Recharge you can often get away with Thunderstrike, which sells for pennies and provides Ranged defense
  • Impale should be slotted as an attack, not a control power
  • You will need Knockback protection somewhere, I put it in Super Speed
  • Hasten probably needs at least 2 slots
  • Its better to put Positron's Blast in cone powers (Fling Thorns) and Ragnorak in spherical powers, because Posi has a +Range IO and Rag does not 

 

This build is very nearly capped to Smash/Lethal.

So with this build you can be melee or play it safe and be mid range. You have permadom without hasten coming in at 88.4 rchrg ((Dom last for 90 secs). With hasten you're at a 67.51 rechrg)  Now this is an expensive build but if you got it its nothing. I farm most days so purps aren't anything. 

 

Ice slick with hasten is perma meaning they will always be bouncing up and down unless you use an immob.

Your damage is pretty good. (22%) End use is great,

Acc is great. You're going to survive with the enhancement of your mez powers. Duration meaning they are going to have a lot of down time while you hold/stun/sleep/immon/slow them. Not to mention the amount of aoe damage you're doing.

Solo is going to be good. Teams is going to be great.

No end problems.

Thank you so much! I'm going to give this last build here a try on Pineapple to see how it plays. Yeah the purples an such aren't a big deal. I farm as well as run TF's regularly.

Just a warning. Jack in melee is not a joke. He will most likely kill steal from you.  I actually get mad at him sometimes.

Here's an entirely ranged build. I don't think I'd run this personally. You'd do better just using it as a point of comparison. Things to note:

- Entirely ranged means no Arctic Air. The bulk of what AA accomplishes is to keep you safe in melee. If you're only going into melee to Glacier and back out, it's not worth it.

- This is not softcapped S/L. In combat you're only at 39%, but you're a Dominator. Unless you're soloing ITFs, you don't need to be constantly softcapped to anything.

- For when you do need to be soft capped, Unleashed Potential will iTrial soft cap you to S/L and regular soft cap you to all positional.

- You should be about ~6 seconds short of perma Hasten. That's probably Domination every 1:20 seconds.

- Without AA your endurance costs are pretty low for what a Dom can handle.

- When you get to Incarnates I recommend Intuition Alpha, because it buffs basically everything about this build. But it's not a requirement for anything to work.

- I don't have any experience with Thorns, or any -def heavy sets. If you do and are willing to take an accuracy hit for a proc, go for it.

- Double +def IOs in Jack. I'm Psionic Mastery so between Link Minds and Grant Invisibility my Jack hits like 44% all typing/AoE. I don't know that ~37% in this build will let Jack really cut loose. You may do better with the build up proc or just putting the slots elsewhere.

Hmm. Not to sound too negative, because the game allows you to play however you want. and I am sure the AA-less build is nice. However, my general feeling about Ice builds without Arctic Air is that you would be much better off rolling Earth Control and coloring the powers like Ice. Earth gets Earthquake, which is a very similar power to Ice Slick. It also gets Stalagmites (ranged stun) Volcanic Gasses (ranged pulsing hold) and a much sturdier pet. Plus can be made to look very similar to Ice. 

 

Arctic Air is really the only unique thing about Ice Control other than that is that Ice Slick also contains a slow effect, which is a nice touch. But then Earth can slot a +100% Recharge IO in Earthquake and for some reason Ice cannot do that in Ice Slick, which is frustrating. So, other than maybe the sound effects and the look of Jack Frost I think you'd be much happier going with Earth if Arctic Air isn't on the menu.

I agree with that, Man with earth you can really get some good frakenslotting out of it. The fact you can slot ice slick is a bit disappointing. But at the same time you can make it perma and free up some slots to go to other needed powers.

If you are not explicitly planning to be in melee, AA is not worth running. If you don't take Psionic Mastery and can't soft cap Jack, then he's just a crazy AI that's going to die. If you do neither, I just wouldn't pick Ice.

Once again, I appreciate all of the comments and suggestions.

 

I ran @mbre2006's second build for my initial test. I'm a glutton for punishment so the first thing I did after putting in the sets is I headed over to PI, set myself to +0/8 with Bosses on. I didn't feel that this would punish me enough so I deliberately chose an Arachnos radio mission.

 

To my surprise, I did very well. I honestly expected to die multiple times but I didn't. Not even once! I do however need to work on the rotation.  The mission wasn't horribly slow but it wasn't fast either. I also needed to pop some blues here and there. Definitely an end hog.

 

 I will say this, Ice/Thorn feels awkward. I'm going to test a bit more over the next few days but I wanted to give you guys some initial feedback from my test. I really wanted this to work for a character I had a theme for but it may not be in the cards. We'll see how the rest of my testing goes.

I don't have a rotation  for thorns like i do /ice assault but were the fire orbs firing off each time you hit the aoe?  Those will help with dps

That's what I keep saying. With strong mezzs having cap resists really doesn't matter when they can't hit you in the first place.  It makes no sense to even bother with going for resists/def when they'll be dead long before they get a change to really digging into your health. Even a pure melee dom doesn't need it if his/her mezzs are strong.

You are absolutely right. I didn't pay attention to the fire orbs at all to be honest. I was too busy trying to work out a rotation that worked. The majority of the time I spent frantically mashing buttons hahaha.

At work at the moment, but I’ll post my Ice/Thorns/Ice build I cooked up later. I managed to cap S/L defense without any incarnates, and no purples. I don’t know whether it’s perma-Dom, I don’t know the magic number for that. If I overslotted Hasten I’ll probably move a slot from it into health for my third endurance proc
