Started a MM recently got it up to 49, pets die like way to easy. Stiff breeze... dead.. Have them on follow and defensive doesnt seem to be helping in the slightest. 

 

Is there a way to make them not die when something looks at them? I spend more time in combat resummoning then they do attacking, its maddening.

The best way to keep Pets alive is to take the aggro onto your Mastermind and share that damage out to your Pets via Bodyguard Mode (Defensive/Follow or Defensive/Stay or Defensive/GoTo).  That way they help you "soak" the incoming damage.

 

Of course, then you need to be able to heal them of the damage that they're taking ... so an AoE Heal power of some sort is your best option.  Empathy, Pain Domination, Traps, Nature Affinity and Time Manipulation will all help you with keeping your Pets healed while you are Tankerminding them by keeping aggro on yourself (or at least, trying to).

 

Note that it is a LOT easier to hold aggro on your Mastermind when your Mastermind is dealing damage to $Targets.  If you're playing your Mastermind as a pure "buffbot" who does nothing aside from summon/upgrade and use secondary powers it's going to be hard for you to hold aggro on your Mastermind ... in which case build/plan accordingly.

 

After that, it's really all about slotting the Pets with the +Defense and +Resistance procs that are available, coordinating your secondary powerset with the needs of your Pets for their survival and ... working on tactics/positioning in engagements to help keep them safe(er) than if you just let them all cut loose (and suicide like morons).  A LOT of what makes a good Mastermind a GOOD Mastermind is how much work/attention/situational awareness the Player is expending on staying in control of an inherently chaotic set of circumstances and situations.

Your powerset and build would help alot. Do you have mids? Masterminds kinda need IO builds to stay competitive, but with the right powerset and build they can be crazy durable. 

 

To give you an idea, my thugs/time can solo +4x8, often without using incarnates besides the ones that are always active. My demons/nature has soloed the Master of ITF which includes no temp powers and no dying, though that took all my incarnates to pull off including my lore pet to do it fast enough to survive it.

Thanks guys for the tips. Its been a struggle, I got to 50 last night and finished slotting out all but the Web Envelope power (farming on my Fire/Rad brute to get the inf to buy the Gravitational Anchor set)

 

As Redlynne said, I am going for a Buff bot route with my bots.

This is your build? It looks...really solid tbh. 

 

Can you pull up the combat attributes for your protectors and assault bot and show what their defenses are at? Cause this looks like your bots, with the protector bot bubbles up on all of them, should be at or maybe past the softcap. I'm curious to see what numbers you're running with cause this build looks decent. The only immediate change I'd suggest is you can switch the def/end LOTG in protectors to just the LOTG +def.

I am assuming the defense numbers are the same as ours at 45%. 

What about resistance numbers ?

 

I can see that in his build with the protector bot bubbles active the player isn't at defense cap and resistance wise its not so high. 

So depending on the play setting on solo, there would be many hits getting in and many hits with low resistance against. On high settings 3/8 or 4/8 I could see pets getting crushed a lot more often.

Your defense isn't pet defense, putting yourself as the highest target in the threat order will keep you getting hit and the pets getting hit less, then your pets have some form of damage mitigation from you, capitalizing on yours. Then factor in AoEs, they can hit you and all your pets together, so positioning can be important, where the pets attack can be where the npcs are but where you are, being attacked can be slightly out or visa versa,, I played Tanker and Defender before Mastermind so it was mixing both roles to me, but easier because I slipped in provoke.

 

Some players make their characters all about them, if it doesn't help them, they don't want it, their build advice to you will ofcourse be about making your character the best thing that helps them too if they ever team with you, because it's always about them.

To figure out my pet's defense in Mid's, I add together all of my AoE buffs (Maneuvers, Farsight, whatever), pet IO uniques, and Protector Bot bubbles (or Enforcer maneuvers), making sure to calculate any extra defense enhancement in any of those powers or if I power boost any of the click powers, like Farsight.

 

With their current build, assuming all bubbles from protector bots have been cast on everything:

Assault Bot and Battle Drones - ~48.6% Defense to all but AoE, and ~63.6% to AoE

Protector Bots - ~38.7% Defense to all but AoE, and ~53.7% to AoE

The Protector Bots will give the player ~9.9% with one bubble.

 

This build has all three unique +resistance pet IOs, giving all pets within 40 feet will have +35% resistance to all in addition to Bot's resistances.

So this build would give all Bots:

Smashing: 35%

Lethal: ~61.15%

Fire: 35%

Cold: ~61.15%

Energy: 35%

Negative: 35%

Psionic: ~61.15%

Toxic: 35%
