Personally I miss the old costume competitions. Nowadays it is just some silly theme or gimmick contest.

 

Rename them to "who can make the most ridiculous costume competition". Lol.

 

It is City of heroes and not City of Halfwits after all.

Less themes would be better in my opinion. Reverse theme for example, what does that exactly mean?. I have seen characters with nice 50/50 looks, half robots for example and then a cow character gets picked that was funny the first dozen times you see one maybe. Some that win just don't seem to fit the theme at all.

 

Just pick a costume because it's looks an amazing superhero and not some generic costume with 1 or 2 changes using a /camera emote lol and a gimmick name.

 

In the art and multimedia section are some awesome costumes. 

 

Just my opinion but I don't bother with CC's anymore because the gimmick always beats someone's nice superhero costume.

We had a contest with no theme for our anniversary CC in May. As people can see with the voting for GM costumes now - its subjective. People have different preferences and it never leaves everyone happy. We will occasionally have a no theme contest, but otherwise doing that the majority of the time would be boring. The point of having a theme is to make people think outside the box and be creative - (and to have fun!)

 

I'm sorry to hear we wont be seeing you there - but you are welcome to host your own in Paragon City or the Rogue Isles anytime!

And I'm honestly deeply appreciative of non-superhero characters receiving attention and accolade for their creativity and expression.  While I'm more ambivalent on joke characters, I find the doubling-down on superheroes in spandex to be old hat.  This game is better than that because it offers players the opportunities to create personal extensions of their desires and ideals.  If that takes the form of a superhero, so be it.  But the game offers so much more, and I frankly feel those that are willing to test and push the boundaries of that deserve the most recognition for their craft.

 

Difference of opinion, clearly, but I say:  Keep the themes for the official contests varied!  Lean in to them harder, in fact.  When a theme is "Science," don't just consider "Science superheroes."  Consider -everything- that "Science" could mean as a theme!  Let the players' creativity soar, and then reward them for being able to think outside the box!

The origin themes were an idea we had that I plan on working with much more - going into more specific ideas and themes in the future. I look forward to the contests monthly seeing what everyone has come up with.
