Frozen Aura

Can you folks help me understand Frozen Aura from Ice Manipulation secondary.  Is it good?  Is it worth using?  Did it used to be a toggle?  Does it have +damage in it?  So many weird questions.  Is it worth slotting a set of Superior Avalanche in?

Good. It's footstomp minus the knockup and you don't need to be close to the ground to use it despite the animation. Add Avalanche+proc for the authentic footstomp feels.

Despite its name, it was never a toggle or buff or debuff, it's just an attack. Frozen Aura is also the final power for Ice Melee for Stalker/Tanker/Scrapper/Brute, as Nemu said, its pretty much footstomp with a sleep secondary effect rather than knockup. Its PBAOE, so if you are in melee, I imagine its very worth taking.

What is the radius on this?  You say Footstomp I think big.  MiDs has it as radius 10

10 is the same or larger radius than Frozen Aura has for melee (8 for stalkers, 10 for scrapper/brute/tanker), but is less than what Foot Stomp gets (15 for Brute/Tanker). 10 is also what Rad Melee (Atom Smasher) and Psi Melee (Mass Levitate) get for their capstone PBAoEs. Foot Stomp does get a radius increase relative to the others, probably because SS is entirely Single Target for damage besides that.

I started this ice/ice as a Blapper.  But playing it, even with a desire to build like a blapper, Ice/Ice/Cold just is not that.  Not to me.  Ice Slick (very nice, no extra slots needed, situational, funny, effective, keeping) and Frozen Aura.  Meh, 6 slotted, still Meh.  very short range.  Dropping it.  Will reconfigure the slots, prob to softcap Ranged Def.  The build naturally wants to work at the 20-50 range.  (Cones and rains) backing up to 80ish for hard targets.  (I like to give my victims room in case they get ornery) I will stay in the 20-30 range for quite a while if things are not craptastic.  But with lining up cones and the ability to drop rains at a distance I just dont see Ice desperately needing to augment Point Blank and go there.  Drop Ice Slick and retreat....errrr retrograde while laying into the enemy.  My fast paced team version of this is to jump AHEAD of the team, other side of the big spawns.  Drop Ice patch and start dropping AoE, cones, rains, etc.  Let the team and the mobs (slowly) come to me.

Snarky, This is how mine is set up.  Defense was a focus. If you can't afford the Hami's, you can take 3 of slots from Frigid Protection and move them to a 5 slotted Scorpion shield and 4 slotted Weave and Manuevers for roughly the same numbers.   I tried without Scorpion shield to stay with the ice mastery but frozen armor left my energy def lower.  I did take Hoarfrost with it at the time to max the hps, but max is 1847 and this build is 1600+, so it ends up with half of wasted and just another button to remember to click.   The scaling resist in Combat jumping can be removed and placed elsewhere as wanted.

It's 10ft for stalkers as  well.  10ft radius and 10 target cap, same as everyone else.

 

I can see a Blaster not being impressed by it relative to all the big AoEs they have access to otherwise, but it's a big deal for my Ice stalkers with a 50% chance to crit from Hide, especially considering I can get into Hide multiple times in a fight after Assassin's Strike w/Hide ATO proc.
