Honest Fire/TA critique

I have a few Corrs that play really well. I have a Ice/Nature and a Ice/Kin that are super fun to play. I have never given Fire a shot simply because...well everyone plays Fire. But it's time to try it. I also have never played /TA and I have heard good things. So why not do something completely new all the way around?

 

I have built a couple of Fire/ toons in Mids (a Blaster and a Corr) but never played them. And I have gleaned a little bit of info about /TA in the Def and Troller forums. 

 

So 1st question...should I be doing this as a Corr or Def? I plan to play at range so my plan is to attempt to cap ranged Def. But I am having a little trouble trying to accomplish all my goals.

 

So here is the build. I am not a Proc monster builder. I'd rather have set bonuses and more Defense than be completely exposed and rely on Proc damage. I'm just THAT guy. Sorry.

TA works well on a corruptor, especially paired with Fire. If you want to do TA as a defender I would pick a blast set that allows you to slot procs.

  • I wouldn't bother slotting Entangling Arrow. It's more useful for the -res than the immobilize. Stick an acc IO in the base slot and call it a day.
  • Unless you PVP, Flash Arrow is autohit. Slotting for accuracy isn't required.
  • Glue Arrow is autohit. Slotting for accuracy isn't required. Slot 1 slow IO or the Impeded Swiftness proc.
  • Acid Arrow does minimal damage. Slot Accurate Defense Debuff if you want the set bonuses, otherwise slot damage procs.
  • Oil Slick Arrow is autohit. Unless you want the set bonuses, slotting for accuracy isn't required.
  • If you're looking to soft cap ranged defense, you're going to want Tough and Weave. Recommend dropping Super Speed, Hover and/or Combat Jumping.
  • Afterburner is no longer a power choice. It's included with Fly and has been replaced with Evasive Maneuvers. Update to the new version of Mids.

Did a little rearranging and came up with this. Came close to Ranged Def cap. I can get over it by using Artillery in Acid Arrow but I think I want to try and see how much the Debuff helps along with the Proc in the Shield Breaker set.

I have a Fire/Trick Arrow Corr around vet level 36 on Excelsior, and I absolutely love it. This combo is surprisingly potent in virtually all content I've participated in. I personally recommend taking the perma-Soul Drain route, while capping smashing/lethal res with Dark Embrace + set bonuses, Tough, and the Defense Amplifier from the P2W vendor. With 20+% defense, Flash Arrow will floor the tohit of whatever enemy you face and you can avoid chasing softcapped defenses while maintaining very solid survivability, as long as you remember to paint your targets with Flash Arrow before engaging.

 

I went for Ageless in lieu of Clarion or any other Destiny, as I rely on the Defense Amplifier/EMP Arrow for mez protection and to push myself to the smashing/lethal res cap. Additionally, this is one of the most endurance hungry builds I've played and extra recharge never hurts. Intuition Radial is handy here as well to push your damage up a little higher while increasing the potency of most Trick Arrow secondary effects and improving range on powers. This is the setup I currently run.

One other thing to note: half of Flash Arrow's -to-hit is unresistable, meaning even if you aren't quite at the soft cap for defense, against Flashed enemies, you are.

 

I noticed you skipped Poison Gas Arrow... this power is really underrated.  The sleep isn't really worth much, especially with all of fire's DoTs, but the damage debuff is huge.  Here's my Fire/TA for comparison

I've run every permutation of Fire/TA (plus TA/Fire) and in my opinion the best of the bunch is the Corruptor track.  You don't notice the difference much with minions and lieutenants, but boss and above, the Corruptor wins easily on account of Scourge. 

 

As far as slotting goes, I think your build is the right approach (big fan of splitting up Superior Scourging Blast) but on a /TA I prefer to stick as much Ranged defense in there as possible, since /TA really doesn't have any survival poppers the way /Dark or /Rad might.  You'll kill plenty of GMs and AVs with a Fire/TA, but only if you're evading the incoming; Flash Arrow and soft-capped Ranged defense should make it difficult for anything to lay a hand on you.
