Cold/Beam for review/feedback

My latest project is a Cold/Beam Defender. I envision him as staying at range with Hover, using debuffs on tough enemies. In that pursuit, my goals were to chase Ranged and AoE Defense where possible. This is not the order I would take the powers necessarily; it is just easier in Mids sometimes when you are trying to see what you can fit in at 50. So view this as at "at 50" build, rather than a leveling build. Any tweaks or feedback (big or small) is welcome! I am not sure what Incarnates fit best for this concept so all suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance!

  • The shields need 2 more slots each
  • Add the 6th piece of Defender's Bastion to Single Shot for the recharge bonus
  • Slot the full Winter's Bite set in Disintegrate
  • Slotting Sleet for damage is a waste. All it needs is 2 recharge IOs or 3-4 pieces of a Defense Debuff set.

Thanks @Uun, I'll take a look!

 

I suspect you and I are chasing slightly different primary goals in our respective builds. For instance, the 6th piece of Defender's Bastion is nice to have, but my Recharge is already more than yours (mainly because I have Hasten and the LotGs). I needed a slot at the time (for what, I don't remember now) and cut it from Single Shot. If I can find a way to work it back in, I definitely will. 

 

I franken-slotted Disintegrate mainly because the extra defense the 5th and 6th Winter's Bite pieces provided was overkill. But if I drop Superior Frozen Blast out of Sleet, I need to find the defense to replace it. I agree my Sleet slotting was not optimal and you are entirely correct - damage is a waste in it. That was probably far too tunnel-visioned of me chasing AoE defense. I guess I can take the procs out of Overcharge and use the Frozen Blasts there, drop at least two slots from Sleet

 

Is the extra two slots in each shield worth the investment? I'll have to tinker. Looks like that adds 8% more defense to each in your build, which is significant. I'll have to play around and see if I can find the extra slots.

 

Finally, what Incarnates did you choose for your build?

 

Your build gives me lots to consider, so thanks much!! That's why I post - to get opinions and advice from folks who have real experience playing a certain build and who can speak knowledgably on it. Good stuff!

Proccing out a nuke totally is a little unusual. You're sacrificing a lot of slotted damage & recharge for the procs. I'd be inclined towards Superior Frozen Blast instead to give you a heap of AOE Def. 

 

I'd also consider swapping Aim and Tactics in terms of position and slotting. Personally I like the "Chance for Build-up" to be on demand, so you can go Sleet > Aim (+Chance for Build up) > Nuke and everything dies. 

 

And as Uun says Sleet only really needs Recharge (it will stack too vs AVs) so slots to play with.

I can't use Mids, no computer only internet is this phone so that might lead to some odd questions etc..

 

If Infrigidate can hit reliably, then you shouldn't need Accuracy in Benumb.  Granted it's more important to hit with Benumb but that's why you use Aim, Sleet, Infrigidate then use Benumb.  Unless of course the final hit chance is well shy of 95% for both.

 

It's always floating in the back of my mind but both Glacial and Ice Shield accept both defense and damage resist IOs (as does Arctic Fog).  There's a lot a unique and special IOs that can be placed there.

 

Gaussian's is a nice +defense.  It's also 6 slots to get there.  I tend to agree with moving the proc to Aim and slotting Tactics differently.  Too many slots for the benefit but hard for me to tell how easy it is to make up elsewhere.

 

Heat Loss - you could squeeze a slot out by 2 slotting HL with 2 +5 boosted recharge IOs.
