Finally found a dominator I enjoy playing - Fire/Ice

I have a lot painful history with doms. I probably have more than a dozen dead attempts. I have only kinda liked one before grav/psi, but I found it too slow for general play.

 

Now, I have found a combo I really enjoy, even if dom is not active, Fire/Ice/Mace.

 

The toon lives in melee all the time and survives at pretty much any level once built out. The secret sauce is two 30' diameter damage-slow auras plus Ice Sword Circle which has the same diameter. Anything with melee range is taking fire, cold, and lethal damage while being heavily slowed. Even before you add in fire controls.

 

Caveats, level endurance is not as bad as you would think from 1-40. You just need to relax, focus on controls, and let the auras do the damage. But I did hit a slump 40-50, so I engaged in some power leveling. Once, I got built out with IOs and Ageless, the build took off like a rocket. Even when doing lower level content you just need to remember, ABB, always be bonfire-ing, for the Force Feedback: Recharge. You can keep dom up most of the time then, even w/o team recharge buffing.

I tried one of these on live - it was my first villain but I just couldn’t work it right - so I weirdly love whenever I see one working out. Ice sword circle has such a nice SFX. Might try it out now I’m a decade older and have a lot more patience!

Glad to see folks like the build. One note I would like to emphasize again, ABB. If I don't have incarnates or team recharge buffing, I will cast Bonfire every time, even when waiting around. My teammate probably think I am weird, dropping Bonfire right next to me every 10 seconds. This will not always keep domination up, but it will knock the recharge enough that if you lose dom, it will not take long to get it back.

Quick question, I'm going to remove tactics and Scorpion shield for sleet and frozen armor. Bad idea? I lose some energy defense but I switched out the lockdown in cinders for entomb and that helped a bit.

 

 

I am no experts on Dominators. Sleet and Frozen armor is a popular choice. Give it a try.

 

With Scorpion Shield it's easy to softcap energy defense, because there are a lot of sets with some energy def bonuses.

 

I am rather obsessive about accuracy, I would not give up tactics, for when Dom is down at low levels. But again I am obsessive. 🙂

Hello!! Good to know you find a good combo for enjoying doms. As you said i noted checking your build that you achieved interesting defense numbers but not permadom which is highly advisable.

 

So i pick your combo and put together something similar in terms of defense but using Ice Mastery. This build has Ranged and S/L defense softcapped with Agility Incarnate and/or using Power Up when available. Also this build is in permadom. 

 

I didnt take any of the PbAoE auras because they are too end heavy in my opinion and dont see great benefits in return dps wise.

I didnt take any of the PbAoE auras because they are too end heavy in my opinion and dont see great benefits in return dps wise.

I do have perma dom, by only five seconds, before you account for Ageless and Bonfire FF:Recharge. Five seconds is too tight for my tastes, but Bonfire procs fixes that when Ageless isn't available.

 

The auras serve many purposes, they keep the mobs close, slowed, -recharge, and damage. And most importantly in range of Ice Sword Circle and controls.
