Constant Mapservers

HI all,

I keep getting constant map server disconnects.  I have run with /netgraph 1 running and there seems to be no issues with my ping and I have a pretty constant green netgraph with no red spikes, yet I seem to map every 2 - 4 minutes.  This has been happing over the last 3 or 4 days when I have been trying to play.  I havent played for some time but wondered if it is affecting anyone else or if it is because of an influx of returning and new players after the licensing announcement?

**EDIT - this is on Excelsior

**EDIT 2 - also occuring on Indom as well

Thanks in advance for any assistance or insight.

Not surprised due to the HUGE amount of traffic on all servers in particular Excelsior.  Give it a few days or even try playing at lower than peak load times.

I rarely have issues and was having problems with connecting all last weekend too.

Are you on Wireless or Wired?

Most likely a network issue, with wireless having a bit more troubleshooting that wired.

Wireless: check your link speed, if it's below 3Mbps, you may have problems.  Either your network adapter, Wi-Fi Router, or both need a possible upgrade.  (Internal Wi-Fi in laptops since 2016, very unlikely to be an issue.  Routers on the other hand, people tend to run them until they break.  If it's been 5+ years, might be a good idea to consider it's successor.)  Also, device placement regarding your machine may be causing interference: cement, metal, etc. tend to bounce radio signals instead of absorb it.  Microwaves cause dead spots, whether they're on or not.  Finally, check that your netgraph isn't making large blocks (which could be any color: green, yellow or red - indicates a timeout about to happen), which means your signal is being interrupted.

Wired (same advice applies to Wireless as well): in case your router needs port info for manual firewall setup, here it is -- https://homecoming.wiki/wiki/Game_Client#Network_information (MOST shouldn't need this, if your router allows NAT, you should be in the clear with no changes needed.)  Also check any Quality of Service settings, such as Application preferences (Gaming traffic in particular) are enabled, or any "Preferred Device" flags (more common in Wi-Fi) that gives a device more bandwidth than non-computer devices who don't need as much.  Finally, if you're in the EMEA market, an alternate DNS such as Google DNS (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) (or both) may allow better uptime.  Your router should accept custom DNS settings that affect all the devices in your house at once.

If all else fails, a conversation with your ISP to get pointers or advice may be helpful.  (Most gateway devices are as simple as "have you turned the device off and back on?" to clear up connectivity weirdness.)

Okay more information.

I am on a wired connection - 500mb/12mb

I have checked the ports and they are open but I have also set port forward rules in my router just in case.

I have checked with my laptop on wireless and wired and the situation is the same.  My netgraph is the same on both machines and all looks good.

I guess it must be an issue with my ISP as noone else is having any issues, but without knowing what to ask them I may be stuck as they will say my internet is working fine, which to be fair it is, and I am not having issues with anything else on my PC or my PS5.

I will keep trying at different times of the day to see if it is an issue with server load, but I am in the middle east so am generally out of time to the US when it is busiest unless I get up at 0400 to play.

Thanks again

Additional information

I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled the game.  I have tried with the diagnostic and normal mode.  When I ran it with the debug console I was able to get the mapserver ip address and am able to constantly ping the server whilst losing connection to the map server.

I have noticed it seems to map server once the netgraph says it has retransmitted : 2.  I thought I was onto something but it also disconnects with no retransmits or duplicates.

I am now at a loss as to if there is anything else I can try or what to ask of my ISP.  I am able to play on STO with no issues and also online on my PS5.

it may not even be the isp, it can be any hop between u and the server.. programs like ping plotter or tracert can show where it is, using a vpn can maybe solve this cause u would have a different route to server.

Former Player on Server:

Protector, Guardian, Virtue, Liberty, Freedom, Union and Defiant (Hero Side) and part Time Infinity

Justice, Pinnacle, Victory (Villain Side)

Currently Reunion is the Main Server

Back in August , I moved and my new internet was horrible for City of Heroes.   Did some diagnostics and noted that my connection wasn't awesome, it's just everything else wasn't as noticeable.   After some more work, wound up replacing my router and immediately I was back to being able to run without too many issues.

One of the odd things happening to me before the replacement router was when I was dual boxing, one of the clients would map serve and disconnect while the other didn't have that issue.   However, I had bad lag whatever I was doing.

Thanks for all of the advice.

I have tried Reunion and I get the same result.

I am going to try putting the ISP provided router into bridge mode over the weekend and try an older router that I have lying around to see if that makes a difference.

Putting the ISP router into bridge mode and using my own router seems to have resolved the problem.

Thanks for all the suggestions and the help with getting this resolved
