Marvel / D+ 2025 slate

Recommended Posts

Leaked before embargo earlier, official version now up:

  • New Daredevil. Looks like they're doing the Mayor Fisk storyline. (Maybe a little on the nose right now.) Also, I sometimes like and sometimes loathe when writers/directors pay tribute to their favourite flicks. But giving Charlie and Vince the diner scene from Heat to play with is a good use of their time. Also Jon Bernthal back as Punisher.
  • Ironheart: suggests RiRi may not be a cut-and-dried Hero, more of a Rogue. Could be standard, could be a surprise. Might skip.
  • Friendly Neighbourhood Spiderman: looks like they're taking the Miles Morales style from the games and Spiderverse, but with Peter's story - and the What If Spidey Hudson Thames voicing. Charlie Cox will guest as Daredevil.
  • What If Season 3: last part of these adventures, sadly, with a cowboy Shang-Chi and mecha Cap: and already also announced, Bucky and Red on a road trip, and Agatha going to the musicals. Because the series wasn't camp enough.
  • Marvel Zombies: the What If ep was well-received, so it gets a season order. Should be fun.
  • Eyes Of Wakanda: the origin stories for a nation. Also for an artist: this is the brainchild of one of Marvel's storyboarding crew, ran it past Ryan Coogler, and they let him run with it. Let's hope it's good.
  • Wonder Man: MCU's sending itself up (again) with this one, with Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen) auditioning for the role. He then gets teamed up with a superhero storyline consultant, one Trevor Slattery (Sir Ben Kingsley back again), and Ed Harris as his long-suffering agent. Oh, and Demetrius Grosse as Simon's brother Eric, aka The Grim Reaper. I get MCU Get Shorty vibes from this, and that's a good thing. Hope I'm right.

Plus the D+ release of DP&W. Definitely watching What If, might give DD a go if it’s not full-on DARKNESSJUSTICEOPARENTS grimdark, and will give WM a shot. Everything else… we’ll see.

Side and slightly business related note: anyone in the US or CA on the ad-supported tier of D+? What’s the ad load like per hour, and what kind of ads are you getting?

In the UK, I get a 1 min-ish break, either one ad one two 30” slots in a short show (Agatha, 30-40 minutes… plus ten minutes of credits).

Lots of perfume ads because it’s nearly Christmas and clearly they think someone in my house doesn’t know how to shop for me, which… fair enough, actually. *glares* Rest seem to be Disney remnant/house spots for the Princess range and other shows.

And no matter what the AI thinks, I have no time for the Kardashians. Not since they invaded Bajor.

Mildly interesting how many of these are animated. I find them easier to pull off and obviously the budgets are cheaper. This feels like the better way to go forward.

Top 10 Most Fun 50s.

1. Without Mercy: Claws/ea Scrapper. 2. Outsmart: Fort 3. Sneakers: Stj/ea Stalker. 4. Emma Strange: Ill/dark Controller. 5. Project Next: Ice/stone Brute. 6. Waterpark: Water/temp Blaster. 6. Mighty Matt: Rad/bio Brute. 7. Without Hesitation: Claws/sr Scrapper. 8. Within Reach: Axe/stone Brute. 9. Without Pause: Claws/wp Brute.  10. Chasing Fireworks: Fire/time Controller.

Not going to lie, the only thing I am somewhat interested in is Daredevil.  I enjoyed the Netflix series, but I don't have a lot of faith that now that Disney is involved, it's going to be anywhere near as good as it was.  I'm cautiously optimistic.

As for the rest, meh.  I'll pass.  Zero interest in it.

Ironheart:  This one's going to be tough no matter whom they put into the role.  It's the character that falls the most into the shadow of RDJ's Iron Man, and that's possibly going to be harder to follow than Peter Davison following Tom Baker, or Brandon Routh stepping into the Christopher Reeves role.  The rogue bit I'm narrowing eyes at.  I'm already miffed (that's British for really mad, right? 😉) that they seem to be turning Sharon Carter into a bad guy.

Marvel Zombies:  I am....so...tired...of zombie stories. (and vampire stories.  Sorry, Snarky.)  I tolerated, and even enjoyed a little, the What If...? ones because I'd assumed the stories were short.  Not stoked for this.

Wonder Man:  not going to lie...years back when it was batted around that Nathan Fillion might be offered the role, I was stoked.  I've no real viewing experience with Yahya Abdul-Mateen except for his role as Black Manta, so I offer no opinion on him.  I'll consider it tabula rasa.  Ed Harris is fine.  I love Sir Ben, though I can take or leave Trevor (guess I'm still sore at the fake-out in IM3.  Kingsley would have been awesomely terrifying had that been the real guy.)  I always thought the Grim Reaper to be a rather silly character (ooo..he has a sythe for a hand!) until I saw the character as voiced by Lance Henriksen in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.  There the character was smart and efficient even if he had a rather silly cybernetic attachment.

Hey, I rather like Garik, even if he is a humble tailor and nothing more.

Animation also allows for aging actors (see X-Men '97 and The Incredibles 2) and replacements if an actor dies.  These days, all I ask is for high quality story lines and high quality animation.  Both of those, along with replacement actors and aging actors were found in the Star Wars' Tales of the Jedi, and I loved it.

Daredevil was one of my favorite characters when I could get hold of a comic growing up.  Unfortunately, I later learned what I was reading was toned down from the main DD comics.  While I believe violence, even extreme violence can play a legitimate role (see Saving Private Ryan), I'm not a fan of gratuitous, extreme violence, so after watching a bit of the Netflix series, I tuned out.  I'd hoped that MCU might have reeled that in a bit to target a larger audience, something more along the lines of Ben Affleck's movie (still pretty violent), but I gather it won't.  I'm on the fence with this one.  I know that's likely not the popular view.

New Daredevil.

Charlie and Vince will be enjoyable to watch, as they were in the Netflix series and their recent appearances in other releases. Wasn't that Kamala's dad asking the Most Frequently Asked Question, or did I see that wrong?

Would have preferred a continuation of Luke Cage, but I'll probably watch this one for a little more of Vince's performance as Fisk. I.E. This one is a Will Watch.

Ironheart:

Call this one a Probably, Leaning Toward Most Likely. Expectations of more of their usual formula. I submit the shot of her punching the truck a'la' Hulk punching the flying whale thing during the Battle of New York as evidence that this will be a Set Piece Heavy ride of Things We Have Seen Before. I'm as down for some Low-Thought-Required-Entertainment (from time to time) as any other 'Murican, so why not? 🤣

Friendly Neighbourhood Spiderman:

Undecided, but not for any particular reason. Call this one an Eventually If I Run Out Of Other Things To Watch, Or Get More Interested Later.

What If Season 3:

Enjoyed, mostly (see below), the first two. This one is a Will Watch.

Marvel Zombies

This was my least favorite of the previous What If ... segments. I'm with @Techwright on the Zombie Fatigue. Giving this a Probably Not Unless I Am Reeeeeaaallly Bored And Completely Out Of Other Things To Watch.

Eyes Of Wakanda:

Nothing much to say here, save for Sure, Why Not? Should be artistically interesting if nothing else. Could end up being solid, could just be into it for the art.

Wonder Man:

I don't even know what this is, so it will have to give me more to get my interest.

All in all, some interesting stuff, but nothing that I'm overly excited about. That's not a judgment of any sort, I am interested in watching some of them after all, but nothing that gets me saying I Must Watch This ASAP Upon Release.

I’m not sure he’s truly either. Then again everything about him is true… “especially the lies.”

BTW, apologies for manifesting weird pockets of reality again, but Kim decided to go as her true form for Halloween this year…
