I liked the first one enough and Urban as Johnny Cage (my favorite character since the first game) seals the deal for me.

This one is causing family discord. My wife is hyped for this movie. I love Karl but....a martial arts movie at 53?

Making it rated R is a hopeful sign. If you want PG-13, stick with Street Fighter.

Exactly!  I'm going to watch it, but he's got 16 years on Sonya Blade's actress, and just that he's 53.  Maybe if he was playing a later in time Johnny Cage, after a few MKs.

 

I am going to guess we're going to get less Cole Young, which is good, because I did not like his character.

I think given that he's toting his own Comic-Con posters around, this is a very washed-up Johnny after an awful lot of movies, but no actual MKs.

 

Oh, and Keanu's just turned 60. Which is... disturbing on many levels.

Oh, for sure.  It's just, not the direction I would've gone, but I'll take it as a whole different universe and such.

I think there's definitely a route to make this work. Karl is plenty physically capable enough to do the 'retired action movie guy who is in shape, but comically out of his depth against real kombatants' shtick before he gets the Shadow Kick/Punch deity-cult upgrades. After that point, digitally slap his face onto a stunt double for the intense 'Johnny got his groove back' fight scenes and have Karl do what stunts he can along with reaction shots/framing. They've already got a CG Scorpion doing extreme ninja parkour nonsense in there, so why not splice stuff together to provide the full Cage experience too?
