Yes, it's possible, but as the set has no native Defense of its own it requires a large investment in power selections and Invention Sets to accomplish.    Taking a secondary which provides Defense (Broadsword, Katana, Martial Arts, Titan Weapons, Staff Mastery) could help if you go for positional softcaps - otherwise it's probably easier and less expensive to shoot for typed Smashing/Lethal/Energy/NegEnergy softcap. 

 

You also won't have any defense debuff resistance so you will be vulnerable to cascading defense failure - I'd consider an Ageless Radial destiny to cover that.

Yeah, without a +def effect of some sort coming from your secondary I'd think you will have a difficult time hitting any soft caps without compromises elsewhere.

 

I've posted an Elec/Staff build here that caps Melee and Lethal def with Guarded Spin active, and otherwise has defenses ranging from the high teens to the very low 30s. Different slotting / enh set choices would likely help buff those numbers if you wanted to tweak it out.

 

The DDR comment is very relevant. I built for solid resists first, with defense on top. It's certainly not meant to plug any holes: one -def attack would cause everything to fail and nobody needs that.

 

Going with /MA should prove easier to cap. Storm Kick buffs your 3 positional defenses (tho it's a smaller number than Staff's Melee/Lethal) and set bonii could top things up. I debated a long time between MA and Staff, ultimately making my choice based on AoE potential and Form versatility. YMMV and all that.

Here is a Copy of My SS/Elec build.. He's Melee Softcap, pretty unstoppable, Lord Recluse and the Incarnate trials are typically the only time he dies.. I've farmed pill boxes solo is RV, can farm +4/8 AE Smash/Lethal Farms(EEP Rage Crash) just a solid build.. There is one 5 set Bonus Cap, on Annihilation in Ball, so you can adjust how you like.. Added his totals and Incarnate stuff as well.. I have a spine/elec that's 0.3% from Melee Softcap,(in game totals vs Mids) he's only just unlocked his incarnates, so who knows how That build will evolve, I'll attach him to.. Both are higher endgame builds, Got lucky on drops and converting, Excellent Walkthrough on the Marketeering/Money making Side of the Game

Best Advice: Get crafty, mess around on Mids and slot strange things with bonuses you need and 100% Certainly, look into the Test server!!  You can Auto 50 a creation, ondemand IO's and Inf, all incarnates are free to unlock and craft, on and on.. I used to build for Smash/Lethal def, which was EXHAUSTING, melee softcap covers many more DMG types and Scenarios.. Also  Hybrid: Melee Radial Embodiment is good if you're still on a budget/Higher #s for Debuffs.. Good Hunting, and if you have any question, I'll try my best..

Also, All Generic IO's, Rech and End Mod types are +5 enhanced, quite a huge difference that makes.

 

SS/Elec Melee Softcap, No end issues, super fast recharge and Very fun to play.

Also look at the Ghost Widow patron pool. Darkest Night (and Dark Obliteration) helps offset defensive cascade failure (also a great pulling tool).

You CAN soft-cap to one set of types.
But you have no native Defense.  So you have no DDR.  So anything that hits you is going to automatically strip off the maximum amount of Defense.

Like my Fire/Fire/Pyre tank, I just concentrate on capping Resists, slathering on some basic Defense and calling it done.

"Oh noez!  My Defense has been debuffed to -70%!  What ever shall I do?  Oh yeah!"
