Leveling Tri-Form Warshade

Recommended Posts

This is my preferred 1-50 no respecs required build for playing a Tri-Form Warshade.

This particular build essentially "evolves" over time ... from Human (1-5) to Nova (6-19) to Dwarf (20-37) and then finally starts to backfill in to Human (37-50) again until all three forms are "complete" and complementary to each other.  This provides the "safest" route of Tri-Form modes to level with on the ride to 50, and yields a combination well suited to being any (all?) of these Forms as needed once the Warshade has reached Level 50.

Additionally, this build is deliberately designed to Exemplar Gracefully™ into lower level content when needed, rather than being optimized for Level 50 (only) content.

The two breakpoints are Level 24 ... at which all of the Level 27 Set IO bonuses activate (including the ones slotted into powers made unavailable by Exemplar restrictions) ... and again at Level 28 ... where all of the Level 31 Set IO bonuses activate.  This means that even when Exmplared, at Levels 28+ pretty much every set bonus on the build is ON and engaged.

All of the Luck of the Gambler +Recharge IOs will activate at Level 22.

Hasten becomes accessible when Exemplared to Level 25.

So Exemplar Levels 22 (LotGs), 24 (Level 27 Sets), 25 (Hasten), and 28 (Level 31 Sets) are the "breakpoints" for where LOTS of set bonuses activate in this build plan.

This also means that as soon as you hit Levels 22, 24 and 28 you can start building the requisite IO Sets to slot up your powers with, and only need to refresh/update the common IOs every 5 Levels as you grow your way to 50.

I personally consider one of the keys to this build strategy the acceptance of the notion that 6-slotting "everything great" is just a pipe dream, but that 5-slotting MOST of the powers that get used all the time is an acceptable compromise ... especially since so my +Recharge set bonuses activate at the 5-slot investment level.

Could I have 6-slotted more powers and added a lot more Defense to this build?  Yes, I could have ... but then I'd have to be cutting corners on a whole an entire power (or two!) and wind up with more holes in this build than I'm willing to put up with.  This way, I wind up with a build that is "good enough" for my tastes in EVERY Form upon reaching Level 50, and can Exemplar down to almost any Level and still have a reasonably solid build to work with, all things considered.

Once I get all of my bindloadfiles for my Warshade perfected, I'll append them into a post after the build, in case anyone wants to copy/learn from them in the future.

Oh and in case anyone is interested, once you've got the build loaded into Pine (or Mids') you can do a Flip To Alternate on the Slots and see what the build would look like if FULLY kitted out with as many Level 50 Purple IO Sets as can be crammed into the build.

You're Welcome.

Are the dwarf attacks worth slotting if you're not going for sets? At lvl 36 I have more or less ignored dwarf attacks.

I think I have 2 or 3 slots in the mire (frankenslotted for Acc, rchg and endred) and 2 slots in the smite (also frankenslotted for Acc, rchg, endred) and 2 or 3 slots in the heal.

I didn't look at the numbers in Pine, but it feels like they do so much less damage (I guess tanker level vs blaster level).

I mostly use dwarf to soak up alpha and mire, or when things get dicey and I need to recover (res and healing if I don't have bodies yet). I have tanked a few times, and now with 3x res in the form I am resilient, but my focus then is on keeping agro and knocking the boss down, even with little damage.

Once I get closer to 50 I can dual slots some powers that take regular IOs (e.g.hasten) and gain more slots, although I have been slotted human attacks pretty fully at 5 or 6 slots (corpse goes boom, quasar and of course fluffies)

My experience has been that if you invest in the Dwarf attack powers, they'll make it worth your while to fight in Dwarf Form as an aggro magnet for a team.  With sufficient slotting, on a Warshade you can have a continuous attack chain using just the 4 attack powers (I consider the Black Dwarf health drain an attack power), with the Taunt power used as filler.  Interestingly enough, because the Taunt costs no endurance and lengthens out your attack chain, if you're having endurance recovery trouble in Dwarf Form, you can simply add the Taunt to your attack chain to reduce your endurance burn over time.

Just now posted the bindloadfiles I've got setup for my Warshade.  The Peacebringer is slightly different but not by a huge amount.

Rather than doing a pile of powexecname calls bound to keys, instead I do a pile of powexectray # # so that I'm just "function calling" the tray slots.  This lets me move my powers around in my trays without needing to do a complete overhaul of every bindloadfile I've got just to scrub any errors out.  It's a little more work to do on the front end, but it totally pays off on the back end, particularly if you ever need to respec (and want to change the powers taken and where they go in the trays).

I'm sure most people can figure this out but in WSDwarf.txt":

y "powexctoggleoff Black Dwarf$$powexectoggleon Bright Nova$$bindloadfile C:/Program Files/coh/binds/WSNova.txt"

should be

y "powexctoggleoff Black Dwarf$$powexectoggleon Dark Nova$$bindloadfile C:/Program Files/coh/binds/WSNova.txt"

also instead of "C:/Program Files/coh" you can remove it and just have "./binds/WSNova.txt" and it will work with any path setup.

Just wanted to point that out and also add, do you use all those trays?

Bleh ... copy paste foils me again!

And I have to use the full file pathname since I'm playing on a Mac under Island Rum, and apparently the setup can't handle relative pathing like that, so I have to use "actual" filename pathing in order to make everything work right.

I'm browsing the forums during my lunch break and can't load it it Pine's to see some or the totals or even really grasp the whole build (not so used ot the forum view)

It seems most of your IOs are in the low 30s in order to examplar. Have you done an analysis of how much you lose by not going lvl50 or so IOs, in terms of DPS, def %, etc... when addded to your 5-slot philosophy I just wonder if the difference is in the noise (a few extra percents) or significant. Not saying it's a bad philosophy, just trying to measure/understand the tradeoffs.

Do you get perma eclipse at 75% recharge? that's pretty awesome to get at lvl28!

I have been playing around with trying to get both Rchg and Def bonuses, with Res provided by perma Eclipse, but I am intrigued by your concept.

Considering that Mids/Pine builds are starting to diverge, meaning problems with interoperability of code hashes, it's not all that surprising that you can't code load into your copy to bring things up.  It's part of the reason why I'm hoping that PK will succeed with building a webpage that does the job that Mids has been relied on (for far too long!) to do and which can be provided via URL links to bring up builds in a web browser window.

It seems to load fine. I meant I couldn't load them at that moment because I was at work on break.

I took a quick look last night and basically told Pine to automatically set all your IOs to 50 then opened the original build side by side and looked at some of the numbers. Mostly damage but also a little bit in rchg times. You really don't get that much of a boost between 30 and 50. It seems to be 3-5% in how much an attack does for example.

So I can see why compromising to examplar better can be nice.

Aye.  Now, I did this up without knowing about attuning enhancements and all the rest of the jiggery-pokery you can get up to with the Issue 25 changes here on Homecoming ... but yeah, the increase to 50 is really rather minimal on enhancement values, as opposed to the loss of some 20+ Levels of Exemplar performance increases from Set Bonuses.  It's why I moved to the practice of building to Exemplar in the first place back on Virtue, since it didn't "cost that much" in terms of ultimate/maximum performance.

I'm quite new to setting up macros with this game, how do I go about using these text files, as they seem amazing, just not sure how to use them.

First you need to decide where you're going to put your files, so you can decide on what the file pathname to the files is going to be.  As you can clearly see, I chose ...

C:/Program Files/coh/binds/*.txt

... as the location to put my bind files into.  I'm playing on a Mac using Island Rum, so relative path naming doesn't work for me.  What this means is

C drive

. Program Files folder

. . coh folder

. . . binds folder (I made this folder to hold all my bind files in)

. . . . *.txt file

The naming scheme that I used for my files is either PB*.txt for my Peacebringer or WS*.txt for my Warshade so I could put all of their bind files into the same folder without creating naming conflicts.  After that, it's simply a matter of making them use the following naming scheme:

PBDwarf.txt

PBHuman.txt

PBNova.txt

WSDwarf.txt

WSHuman.txt

WSNova.txt

In order to "launch" the system of bind files, all I have to do is be in Human form and copy/paste the following into the chat window:

/bindloadfile C:/Program Files/coh/binds/PBHuman.txt

If you put your files into a different location/file path then you will need to edit the file path portion of the bind file text to match that change in order to get them to work.

I have everything rigged so that in Human Form the 1-0 keys are bound to Tray 2 (not Tray 1, as is typical).  This then lets me put my Form Powers into Tray 1 and keep Tray 1 visible at all times so I can tell when the Form powers have completed their respective recharges and are ready for use (more important for a Warshade who wants to double Mire, but still).

I put the Nova Form (specific) powers into Tray 1 slots 1-4, but rig things such that the Tier 2 Human Form power uses the 2 key in Nova Form, meaning that I don't need to copy the Tier 2 Human Form power into the (Kheldian Forms) Tray 1 in order to use it via keybinding.

The Dwarf Form (specific) powers are loaded into Tray 1 slots 5-9 (with the Dwarf Step in the 10 slot but addressable via the Teleport keybind) but then (re)use keys 1-5 to bind the Dwarf attack powers.  This means that regardless of Form, I'm always using the 1-5 keys to attack with in either Nova or Dwarf Forms, even though I can see at all times the entirety of all of my Form powers loaded into Tray 1.  I then keep Tray 1 at the bottom of my pile of Trays in the bottom right corner of my screen.

Use the T, Y or G keys to switch between forms and load the appropriate bind file for each Form when making the switch.

Use the tilde key (the `/~ key) to target the nearest target OR to target the most threatening target (Quantum/Void/Cyst/Sapper) in order of importance.

If there's a Malta Sapper, it will get the target lock.

If there's no Malta Sapper, but there is a Cyst, it will get the target lock.

If there's no Cyst, but there is a Void, it will get the target lock.

If there's no Void, but there is a Quantum, it will get the target lock.

If there's no Quantum, whatever is the nearest Foe will get the target lock.

In Human and Nova Forms, where you aren't necessarily going to want to automatically close range with a $Target, you only get the target lock.

In Dwarf Form, where you DO want to be in melee range of whatever is most important to you (so as to hit it), not only do you get the target lock but you also automatically put that $Target on Follow so as to stay within melee range of it (also known as the "Jackie Chan bind").

The remainder are binds for the arrow keys for various Archetype specific powers and switching the name of the power used in the Teleport bind depending on Form.

That should be enough for you to figure out what to do if you want to edit these bind files into working a different way for you (such as swapping Trays and so on) if you need to adapt them to your own preferences for layouts.

I am intrigued by the Warshade and want to try playing one. Your builds and the guidance you post with them is much appreciated, but would you be able to offer a more modest IO build without Hami-O's (or even any purps) slotted? I toe the line between serious and casual, and don't think I'd ever quite get a build like this put together. Just wondering what alterations can be made with this in mind, without hurting the effectiveness and intent of the build too much. Thanks!

Well, if you pure Common IOs, you're going to lose ALL of the Set Bonuses, which is pretty significant loss ... and a number of the slot allocations for powers will change because you aren't leveraging the multi-attribute Set IOs to your advantage.

CAN it be done? Yes it can ... but it won't be anywhere near as powerful or capable.  Slot pressure alone will push the entire build towards a different equilibrium of decisions and choices, simply because a successful Warshade relies pretty heavily on Recharge for being able to take on more than they ought to be able to survive.  It CAN be done, but it's a lot more difficult to balance your priorities in the build planner, simply because you are NEVER going to have enough slots (or enhancement values) to reach the performance you'll be able to achieve with Set IOs.  And perhaps the biggest/first question you'll need to answer, and it will depend on your personal playstyle and preferences ... what are you willing to "sacrifice" in order to play a "cheap" build that is slotted with Common IOs only?

I prefer to think of builds like this one as being more of a Long Term Project so I don't feel like I'm "done" with the character the instant that I reach Level 50.  ^_~

Note that I didn't say anything about eliminating IO sets altogether! I merely wanted to see what could be done with a WS build that stuck to orange and yellow quality sets (archetype sets are alright too). To me, those are "expensive enough" because A) I haven't settled on a main to focus most of my resources on yet, and B) while I do have a decent Corruptor capable of farming, it's not an activity I enjoy very much, and I'd rather gain resources while spending my time accomplishing fun and useful things in game. Those 2 points, along with time of course, limit the inf/merit generation that I tend to have. OK, maybe an inordinate amount of time reading about builds and "pining over Pine's" take up a good chunk of my time, too >.>....

And yeah, I view builds as a long term investiture as well. I tend to make a first iteration, with plans to respec at least 2 or more times as I acquire the more expensive IO's along the way. So, I guess my reframed question to you is: what might that build look like? I saw earlier in the thread that you didn't manage to get alternate enhancement sets for skills working in your export, which is a bummer! That probably would give me most of the insight I seek. As for what I'm willing to sacrifice...I don't know yet. I'm used to playing Corrs and Trollers, if that helps. I understand squishy needs Defense and Status protection so that they can let their amazing mayhem ensue. I understand Resist-based builds and playstyles a lot less, and I haven't dabbled much in melee this time around.

Anyhoo, your insight, as always, is appreciated. I had a blast on my WS for a few hours yesterday. I have no clue what I'm doing, but it sure was fun!

For what it's worth, here is more or less what I did on the way up. I recreated in Pine's and didn't worry too much about when I slotted what so the order of slotting may be a little off.

This is a frankenslotted build using mostly yellow sets. It's not really optimized and I'm sure you can do better but it got me to 50 quite well even though I didn't have perma eclipse, etc...

Very much a triform build,if it's a toggle, I don;t take it (I took combat jump in case I happen buy a Luck of the Gambler +rchg but it's not even in my tray right now). In fact several other powers I don;t sue I just didn;t know what to pick at the time (orbiting death is cool but a toggle, so I don;t use it).

The weird lvl21 IOs are placeholder for the free P2Win IOs that work at any level, Pine's doesnt seem to know about them so I faked then with a dmg/rchg at lvl 21 (obviously ignores the proc effect but that goes away at 22 anyway)

I slotted nova as a priority, mire+eclipse, then the booms. In retrospect I might try to slot some of the dwarf attacks earlier.

I never use the TP foe, or dark detonation, shadow slip is meh, but honestly I don't know what to take after a while. If I respec with better sets I will pick pool powers that can be mules for the right sets

I love the knockback to knockdown on Quasar even if it's a bit expensive.

I'm not sure the proc in dwarf form is really well spent, but I happened to get the recipe drop

I went for perma-clarion in my Destiny slot. I have a T1 Spiritual in my Alpha slot for +rchg but I'm still considering Agility, I need to crunch some numbers. Most of the other incarnates are mostly personal preference I think

Anyway, a possible place to get you started for your own build without spending billions. It's not a monster build, but I did my alpha slot arc at 8x +0 and only died a couple times from not being ready for ambushes and the Honoree hits hard when you have no more bods around to buff you.

Um ... that's what the build I posted uses.  The only "must be 50" enhancements are the HOs and the Soulbound Allegiance - Accuracy/Damage/Recharge: Level 50 slotted into Dark Extraction.  I use the HOs where I do because they're the "best" at doing the enhancement function they're being used for in those slots (like Dam/Mez, for example), but some can be substituted for using Set IOs.

So if you want to, you can "downgrade" the build using some alternative slotting to fit your budget, but that kind of exercise is something best done to Suit Yourself rather than being something where I'm telling you what to do.

Your mileage may vary ... of course.

Redlynne, what are your thoughts on the Incarnate powers best suited to a Warshade?

Honestly?  I think they're a matter of personal taste.  It really depends on what you (as a Player) "value" in your gameplay, as opposed to what can be considered "best" courtesy of a spreadsheet analysis.

Back on Virtue, I remember putting Gravitic slotting (for the extra slowing) into my Incarnate and I think using Spiritual for the Recharge (because ALL Kheldians are force multiplied by recharge!) ... but beyond that my knowledge of the Incarnate system has atrophied pretty horrifically over the years.  That's mainly a function of knowledge that isn't used tends to decay.

Right now, as of this posting, both my Peacebringer and my Warshade are Level 5 ... and I've got Nine Alts To Feed ... so it's going to be a while before I have a seriously useful (firsthand) perspective on this question.

I'll give some quick thoughts, hopefully RedLynne won't mind or can correct me.:)

ALPHA

Spiritual and Agility both give you +rechg. ReLynne's build is almost perma Eclipse according to Pine's but it about 2s short. Either Spiritual or Agility will get you there.  Spiritual Core (I think) by about 8s and Agility by 6s. For most powers the difference is even more negligible, unless you didn't have enough set bonuses to start with.

So look at the secondary/tertiaries. I don't have my notes on front of me but I think I concluded that Agility was slightly better for Humans Forms that have a lot of defense because it will boost those. For Tri-form Spiritual is a safe bet.

Someone (Azrath?) mentionned cardiac for for +res. eclipse maxes your res so it would mostly have to be for single AV survivability. I couldn't beat Pines into submission to let me get numbers for Dwarf with Cardiac and I gave up.

DESTINY

Clarion all the way for me. I used to play a human only back in the day when messes detoggled you, so I know all about the WS hole being mezzes (defense helped mezzes miss)

Even now, it's a pain to be locked into Dwarf because you know you're going to be mezzed in the fraction of a second you need for Mire, Eclipse, or Circle.

The T4 is perma, lasts 2 minutes and recharges in 2 minutes. You can even wait for the first mezz to pop it, like a breakfree (this game has gotten so much easier!)

JUDGEMENT

Void is probably the best fit thematically and is PBAOE liek quasarr.

I'm partial to Ion since you don't have to be in the middle of the mob and it's a bit showy but oh so satisfying.

They really are all OK, pick whatever floats your boat.

LORE

According to the wiki, Coneroran have the brightest single target damage (by almost 50% if I remember right). So in my opinion it's the one to get . You want single target to help with AVs or EBs.

But I didn't take it. I'm a big purple alien, why would I have Romans follow me around (well, ITF could have the answer) but I didn't like it.

I took Polar Lights. Highest (or close to it) AOE damage for Lore Pets. More AOE isn't bad, but mostly I liked the subdued look and they look vaguely Kheldian.

Pick your favorites, I just hate big gigantic pets that block the team's view.

INTERFACE

I didn't do too much research on that one. I think I took paralytic because decreasing enemy damage is is like adding to your resistance even though it's capped.

I think Reactive is a good choice too. Makes you hit harder. Maybe a better choice for a human only where your damage is "only" defender scale

HYBRID

I haven't slotted mine yet even though it's unlocked. Been too busy with the other slots. Assault looks like a safe bet at first glance.
