I only have thirty characters so far. What's good to play, and can I get 20 more characters out of this thread?

So I had all my character slots filled back before the sunset. 150 or so characters.

There is no real need to rush to fill your character slots (at 1000 per server, it would be quite a task)

When alting, the real thing is ...

    1) Do I have a sudden urge to make a certain character based on some character conception for one reason or another? (and create the character based on that conception either pre-existing or suddenly created in my mind for some reason)

    2) Do I have a sudden urge to make a new character for a server for some reason? (and then figure it out; example deciding a need a mix of archetypes on a server and something is obviously missing)

    3) Is there some archetype that I haven't played before? (what character conceptions do I have that will fit the archetype or what kind of character conception might fit that archetype)

    4) Is there some set that I haven't played before?

My main reason for making Alts is that I like to create alts. I like creating character conceptions.

I'm not simply making characters to be making characters. I'm making characters with a conception of what makes the different than my other characters.

The reason for this is to not only make the character different to play based on the traits of the character in the game, but how I approach the game through the way that I think that character would interact with the world.

This may or may not make sense.

I guess my point is, you will know when to alt out.

Don't push yourself to alt out.

When the spark hits you, then it is time.

That is to say I would like the shield with FDPC on it as an option. PDPC, SWAT, or LONGBOW wouldn't be bad ideas either. I guess this would fall under an emblem though, so I could work for a chest part as well I guess for t-shirts and what not.

could use a classic fireman's helmet to go along with it.

Just for those time that I feel like fighting fires in the City.

Disney bought marvel in 2009, while this game was still in live owned and operated by NC Soft.

Good time for NCSoft to prepare to cancel City of Heroes while Disney was negotiating in buying them out ... or could there have been a City of Heroes :: Marvel Comics Edition on the horizon back then if the dominos fell in a certain way?

An expansion with a parallel Marvel Comics world with it's own zones. I'm sure it would have been a microtransaction monstrosity.

if Homecoming can't stream due to ToS violations, then why can Thunderspy? Or those others? With seeming impunity, too.

Uh, I guess it's not in their ToS not to?

Want to stream so much then play on Thunderspy.

I know of another "gamer" that did that and they gave up streaming CoH pretty quickly.

I think they even gave up playing CoH honestly.

As I understand it, there is an entirely different breed of  players over there.

The point is no one here is trying to make money off of the game. The DEVs are working to insure no one makes money off it. That's pretty much the whole point.

If you are trying to make money of City of Heroes, kindly find some place else to game.

It's likely the NCSoft folks are politely negotiating,

I'd say it's more likely that NCSoft doesn't have time to bother with City of Heroes.
It has no cultural significance in South Korea.

Apparently, it was a bigger hassle than it is worth.

Letting City of Heroes remain in a rogue state is also kind of a poke in the eye to Marvel and DC for giving them a hard time when the game was active under them.

NCSoft having any part of it at this point would also perhaps wake the sleeping Disney empire as Marvel is now under it's multi-tentacled elder-god-like control.

With a Monster farming team you could grind out Salvage, but most of it would be Converters and Unslotters.

Maybe all those people that want a hard mode should spend more time on Monster Island.

Maybe the better thing to do is to put the King of Monsters on the Island with them.

    Character conception and name?

    It's a secret.

Maybe you will run into them in THE CITY or maybe just another one or more of my scores of characters ... regardless of what server you play on.

Ruins the session for me. Sometimes the day. I may have to drop Help, and I do feel like I "give something back" there. I like helping people.

I don't get involved with the general chat very often.

I use ignore and don't feel bad about doing it.

Like you said. The game is escapism.

If that guy is ruining the escape - ignore.

Don't look back and feel bad about it. That is the way that they want to behave. There are going to be a lot of people ignoring them one way or another.

There are plenty of cool people to engage and game with.

Those that I ignore are in the minority, but I do probably put far more on ignore than other people do.

That being said, by putting them on ignore, I don't have to bothered by their behavior ever again.

I think it may have happened once since I've been back that someone said to another character (that I obviously couldn't see was chatting) "I think they have you on ignore". And that was that. No more talk about me ignoring someone. No one chastising me for ignoring someone.

Using the help channel is an important way to help the community and no one that actually wants to take the time to try to help should be driven from the channel or made to feel bad because they provided help. The help channel isn't for attacking other players. Just ignore the trolls and move on.

Off on a bit of a tangent here, but when you run this as a team it's tough to follow the story. The dialogue came fast and furious at parts and you really don't get a chance to read the mission logs etc. Also, the talk to leader option also leaves the rest of the team kinda unknowing. I don't know if I was misreading or distracted but it is tough to follow/read MOST missions in game.

Most of the mission in-mission dialog boxes in these mission show up in the upper left side of my screen - where my map is located.

I'm not going to close my map so i can read the dialog while I'm actively fighting. I rely upon my map too much I guess.

Teammates not being able to see the mission texts from contacts both in the main game and in the AE are really an issue as some get great enjoyment from reading this.

Also, sometimes this information give clues into what one might expect in the mission and that can be very useful information.

This is true.  I only have anecdotal evidence to draw on, but one of my friends wanted nothing to do with the market...so he vendored recipes.  When it became clear his tanker was "cute but squishy" according to a teammate he quit and hasn't been back.  What if we get rid of recipes altogether and instead received enhancement drops?  Would that incentivize folks like my friend by simplifying the entire IO process?

This is something I agree with a lot.  The current system is far too obtuse for new players.  I know it (mostly, I still have to ask lots of questions) because I've been playing very seriously and reading every guide for like years on live.  But it's bugger all complex.

What you are suggesting would be a huge overhaul of the system.

Pretty much you are requesting removing crafting entirely from the game.

Without crafting to gain funds, the only way to make influence is to trade random enhance drops, sell merit based items and farm. And that would create a situation were people felt like they need to farm for Merits (which some already do). So this causes more farming which I'm against from the get go on multiple levels including that it is grindy.

I would much rather seem them take at much time to overhaul the incarnate system first.

The Incarnate system is way out of hand.

Being able to trade the Incarnate ingredients for crafting would be one of the first things on my lists.

I totally hate feeling like I am wasting a team's time standing around after a mission to feel like I picked the correct part of Incarnate salvage.

I really wouldn't suggest that they go after either one unless we don't want them working on anything else for multiple months.

I think the DEVs' time can be used more productively to refine the existing systems instead of trying to created a different system from scratch using leftover parts from the parts of the game they aren't retooling entirely.

In saying this, let me just say, if you change the game too much, it is no longer City of Heroes ... the game many of us fondly remember and love so much.

  12. I'm not going to go digging around to find it.

Someone probably did and posted it here at any rate.

The Echo are alternate timelines, and the zone teleport system isn't powerful enough to travel to alternate timelines.

You have to go to the Ouroboros first before you start fiddling with the timestreams....

..well ... unless you go to the Midnighters' Club, so maybe they should fix that as well - and move the portal to Crimerioa (or however you spell it) to the Oroborus.

The evidence for the bug is literally in the thread that you didn't read.

You can go into the game and repeatably prove that two specific listings are showing exactly the same sales.  Basilisk's Gaze Accuracy/Endurance Reduction/Recharge is showing the same last five sale as Devastation Acc/Dam/Rech.  If you make a purchase in one of them, it will show up in the other, something that people in that thread demonstrated.  There are three other pairs that have been nailed down exactly listed in that thread, plus more suspected affected listings.

I believe that the system is set-up to believe that some IO set types are interchangeable, and it give you the one that you bid on out of that combined pool.

So someone posts one, you bid on the other, and it becomes the type you bid on when it is delivered to your character.

  14. Ran this with a level 20 with other players at level 20 or below, so the street version not the Oroborus version. Set at 0/0.

First mission, zombie insta-spawn mob shows up, the group is tight like a good mission team, zombies blows up, and kill the entire team.

Continues to happen in other missions, whoever is the target of the zombie insta-spawn mob get killed unless they are flying or running around all over the map trying to avoid them instead of fighting them. Immobilizes and holds don't stop them. Best for the team leader to move away from the group and sacrifice themselves to save the rest of the team.

There are enemy types that unless you get a hold on them immediately and keep them held, they will kill you instantly if you are in melee range.

Add the Viral Cocktail to this, and death upon death to whittle down mobs.

This really needs to be better scaled for a team that isn't filled with level 50s powered down to the mission level cap.

OR possibly this is truly the hard mode that some players are looking for, but will never play because they won't play it with a level 20.

Maybe in the future, I'll play it on a team with level-locked 29's to see if it makes more sense at that level.

  15. It all comes down to when is a players want to have a certain character name greater than the player that already has the name wants to have the character name.

I would also remind all of you that want a character name that is already taken, just because a name is "freed up" does mean that you will be the one that gets it when that happens. The more "wanted" or "likely to be picked" that name is, the quicker it will be snatched up.

The same way people are accused of "squatting" on names, there will be people waiting to pounce if it is announced that a name purge is going to happen at a set time/date. I'm not sure that there is much of a difference between the two.

What I said could very well have happened because it could happen for those exact reasons.

Without evidence to prove that did not happen the way that I explained it, there is no evidence to prove that it did not.

My examples are based on the system working correctly.

Because you believe the system isn't working correctly, you disbelieve an explanation that explains why this could occur with the system working correctly.

    Fix this bug

I have other thoughts, other suggestions regarding the market and its interface but nothing compares to the urgency I think this bug deserves.   At the very least I'd like to hear some communication on why the devs have so far deemed this to not be worth fixing.

    So this screenshot is incomplete.

I can't see how many bids there are and it looks like the number for sale is cut off.

But I can tell you what could happen in these cases.

1,600,000 - someone put on the market for over 5,111 and the purchasing player either guessed at the price or raise it from some point until they purchased one.

5,111 - someone put in a X# of bids at 5,111 and someone put a new one on the market below that and no one else had a higher bid. (lower the price you place an item the less it cost you to put it on the market)

4,000,000 - someone really wanted it and kept upping their bid until they got one.

1,200,000 - someone put a new on the market below 1,200,000 above 1,111,111 or below 1,111,111 but the guy that was bidding 1,111,111 had all their bids filled

1,111,111 - someone put in a X# of bids at 1,111,111 and someone put a new one on the market below that and no one else had a higher bid.

So you see, it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with what the DEVs did. I could very well be how the market works when players are involved.

  18. 12 hours ago, arthurh35353 said:

The thing with everything about the market (and buying things off the market) is that it really is gated on people willing to spend the most time on... not playing the game

I don't spend most of my time in the market instead of playing the game.

When I log into a character, I check the market. It might take 5-10 minutes dependent on what I have sold/purchased, etc. I watch LFG while doing this and join a team if one pops up that I want to/have time to join. Once done with my marketing I may decide to run missions until a team shows up, start a team, or alt/server-jump. I check the character before I log out again, and this doesn't take more than a couple of minutes.

So, if I join a mission before I'm done marketing, I spend the time waiting at a door to do my marketing. Of course, as per above, I check the market before logging the character out.

But sure, people can take a lot of time doing anything.

If you want to spend all you time digging through everything on the market every day then I guess that is possible.

I make decent profit on the market and I don't spend a lot of time doing it.

    1. There are those who are classical Magicians - They started life with no magical ability, but learned how to cast spells and access magical power through study and intellect, and could be considered scientists or engineers of magic. These ones are Magic for what they know.
    2. There are those who have magical items.  A magical outfit, magical talismans, a font of power secreted away that is 'theirs', so on. These people are Magic for what they possess.
    3. Then there are those who are innately magic, either from birth/creation or from a transformative event. They have magic in their blood, soul, mind or body, but may not even understand how it works. They may be from another dimension (e.g. demons, etc.). These people are Magic for what they are.
    4. Then there  are those who can use magic granted to them by another sentient power with magic. The character may be the priest/priestess of a deity, or have a powerful friend or ally who allows them use of their power. These people are magical for who they know, or who knows them.

I think it is a really good list, but when I look at it to break it down and think about it.

2 and 4 seemed to be the same thing except a person instead of the object. Both would be relying upon a source for being magical versus innately being magical.

But then I started breaking down 1 and 4. Did the character in 1 learn magic from a mentor? Does that make it 4 because they have a mentor?

If 1 has a book of spells, does that make them 2 even if they wrote the book themselves?

My evaluation of your list would be

    1) Studied Magic - know it

    2) Possess a magical item - own it

    3) Magical by Birth - am it

    4) Magical by association - granted it

Elric pretty much has all that covered.

Studied magics, check. Has Stormbringer, check. Born a Melnibonéan, check. Summons and deals with spirits, elements, dragons, etc., check.

    Stormbringer

Magical by birth/creation as far as we know. Not sure if Elric count as 2 or 4, but I would tend to count him as 2 because Stormbringer possesses him to kill his friends.

    Dr Strange

Not born with it. Otherwise he has the others covered.

Too tired to go on, but great concept(s) to think about.

    Thanks lot for posting, Andreah.

Should be good stuff floating around my head when I go into the Dream Lands.

  20. I decided to do a little user interface changing mainly due to masterminds and needing to add another tray because of them. I didn't have my pet window open on this screen shot, but it is placed between the main active trays and Tray 4.

One of the secrets of my alt-jumping ways is to keep everything set-up in the same format for all characters, so I save the revised interface loaded it up onto all my characters and moved slotting around on all my characters to fit the new paradigm.

Yes because the HC devs are going to implement this secretly and tell nobody about it.

Look at your character roster, they're all generic'd already.

I think it's pretty standard in any game that only 10% of the players ever go to the forums for anything except to get questions answered.

There is probably a much higher percentage of City of Heroes players that come to the forums, but think it is a pretty accurate guess that it is well less than 25% of the players.

Saying that, players don't have as much reason to come to the forums to ask questions as the City of Heroes /help channel kicks so much booty.

So yeah, if the DEVs announce it in the GMOTD some players will catch it that don't come to the forums, but, honestly, I pretty much blow off the GMOTD myself and jump into the action.

And I don't know who you are to say that "Look at your character roster, they're all generic'd already."

You have no idea what my character are unless you are a DEV and you are digging into my account.

All my characters have bios. They are all character-conception based.

So if you think that taking my names is so important to you then why are you telling me that they are generic?

It is insulting to say that.
