  1. Are really going to bring that made up drama here? People are allowed free will and trying to shame them into doing what you think is right sounds terribly controlling to me. Is that how you meant to come across? Do you think that it is not possible to contribute in more than one area at a time? I am sorry, but you sound a lot like you are demanding a geek spend thier own time creating something you could just go get the code and do.
  2. I remain convinced that there were plenty of 'you will have fun our way' people running the live game. Did these thing intersect with performance and other things? Sure. Does not mean, as the example noted suggests, there was not also a large dosage of 'play our way' involved. Humans are human.
  3. We'll just have to agree to disagree on that one because we probably have different definitions of "working together". I'm not talking about making one single, linear system of updating that would depend on a bunch of devs agreeing on the same changes, I'm talking about establishing a "baseline" update system that allows for easy modification so that forks can be made easily, and any bugfixes written by one server can be applied to other servers when the patch is applied upstream. Basically I just want to be able to start a "basic" server with the core game content and applied bugfixes/patches/optimizations, modify it to my liking (*ideally* using only config files), then release it on a launcher without the need for everyone to re-download the game for each server they want to join. At that point new content (missions, zones, ATs) could be loaded modularly so admins can pick and choose the content they like, thus allowing for multiple "flavors" of the game to exist without the need for major client-side changes or extensive coding to add server customizations. Ok, we are on the same page. :) Fracturing an already small community. You'll have plenty of servers, but they'll all be ghost towns. This is a very real possibility, IMO. The larger populations are going to have to 'just get along' to be larger populations. The next year will be interesting.
  4. Personally, I can see almost endless content being added once the tools are in place by the creative types that lost this in CoH, Neverwinter, and STO. I think once there is a 'base' that can be easily modded by a non geek, the real fun begins. But code updates are a whole different ballgame. Software development 'by committee' does not even work when everyone is paid to make it happen, IME. :) And the idea that the Open Source Community 'works together' is ... not exactly accurate from my PoV. :) In general, OSS development is frantic and un-organized on lots of things. We can already see 3-4 very distict groups of players emerging, some of whom refuse to give air to the others. Traditionalists vs. Funchasers if you will. The Sentinal, for example, is trashed a lot, being called a 'selfish' AT. Over and over I see the old, "What's the point?" line trying to bring it down. The power proliferation terrifies some because 'players can never be trusted to balance things.' Personally, I am plugging 'back to the real idea' of just being able to choose from all primaries and secondaries and a free from approach, which has definately invoked some ire. I get that for a lot of people, the fun is in the busy servers. People that 'just want to play with others' will have to deal with whatever the larger servers do or don't do for future updates. As others have mentioned, many games in this state run successfully for years with no updates at all. I will also add that persoanlly, I just like to play, and the idea of 'having to move to another server and start over' is not a bad thing to me, just another opportunity to make that next idea.
  5. HA! I think the only 'problem' is some people choose to 'look down thier noses' at people that happen to like to hit that button without putting in the 'right' amount of (Protestant Work Ethic Inspired) kung-fu* and those disapprroving individuals then try to lord thier viewpoint over everyone. IMO, the 'problem' is just bullies, busy-bodies, and wanna-be GMs. IME with CoH, that has never changed, even after sunset, just look at the Titan forums and now back here at the number of people that think we are all just 'young greedy gamers that want it all now', with servers pooping up and the servers runner proudly saying they do things the 'right way', not like i25. I am 51. Frankly, I 'work/have worked' plenty. I like to kill pixels with pretty heroes, who are you to tell me what I like is wrong? Telling peopple they have to 'earn' pixels in a video game thorugh 'work' is absurd. Telling people they are having fun wrong? Evil, from my PoV. *really just means time and energy.
  6. Not converting anything. The human psyche uses fear as a primary driver. That includes 'lesser' fear like concern, and interest. The _driver_ behind worrying is fear, it's just how how brains work. Not shaking in my boots, need to find the restroom fear, just the little nagging voice of 'what if'. I do what I can to convey ideas. Like all humans, my vocabulary and vernacular are limited to my experience and therefore my choice of words and phrases might not always be what others would use, and therefore I am misunderstood. I prefer questions like 'do you realize with your words from my point of view it sounds like you are stoking fear?' over accusations of trying to do the thing I am clearly trying to prevent - I don't want anyone to be scared about this, I want it drug out into the light to talk about it. If you think I have a point of view, I wil happily confirm or deny. My whole goal is to make people use all available data to make their own informaed choices and to have a little fun making people think about the world. Why people often want to run to the most negative, worst possible interpretation of my words is actually facinating, TBH. Fear often seems to drive them to assume whatever I said was 'bad' if they don't understand me, IMO; deal with this in real life as well, nothing new here. I find as soon as people, generally, don't understanf me because I am not being clear, they decide to just get mad. Fascinating.
  7. Already being acknowledged by the HC team, try the search thingy, it will reveal...
  8. You are in for so many suprises. The easiest way I can say this is that the game does not work quite like you think it does in several ways. Main advice - do not think you are about to make only one character. Very little other than Bodytype, AT, and powersets cannot be changed later. Population is good right now, cats been out of the bag for a month. Lots of options to solo or group. Several storylines and things exist. SOme are good, some are...good enough. IMO, CoH is more like a comic and less like a simulation. It is a bit more divided up than DCUO. All ATs are fun. All mobs drop loot, it fall right into tyour inventory, no loot stealing, no kill stealing, they do not exist. Auction house is working great. Keep everything. :) Nope - because there are no items. You place enhancments in your powers directly; You can get to 50 as fast or slow as you want, IMO.
  9. Oh, I min-max each and every character I like to play. Just because I will pick a 'lesser' set does not mean I don't like to obliterate pixels. I _love_ that we can recolor and change animations to make things look like other things. Dark can become a lot of things IME. There are plenty of sets I don't find fun and the character lives no more. :) Just because I make a good concept and love the _idea_ does not mean they all get out of the Sewers.
  10. With DP/MA, I duo with a Arch/TA blaster. Both around 28-29 right now. Filled with basic IOs on both, plus a couple extras on both. I bascically 'tank'. Either start with purples and reds or finish with greens as available. We set to 5 players. I teleport in with the MA attack, Dragon's Tail everything, leap out while fire Hail of Bullets, then MA teleport back in so I can kick the remaining mobs, jump out firing whatever is up... So much fun. We just roll on through most everything, never ever was able to do this well on Live with blasters until they were Set IOed to the ears.
  11. Oh yeah, that's what I need. My responsibility-denying addiction on the go. Is there any other good use of technology, besides medicine, over avaoiding RL? :)
  12. Kind of like all the games in this state do now and have been for years... :) This is not new, just new for this game. Will be some serious growing pains for some CoH players in the next year as servers pop up and down.
  13. N CATS WILL SLEEP WITH DOGS BLASTFEEMY why not just pick any powers you want then, why have sets? huh? why not just have all powers, and use them whenever you want, timers suck. i keed. mostly. Heh. The whole 'battle' over this is the same one I have been in for 40 years, Creativity vs Winning. Had RPG players that like to start at 1st level, others that wanted to start at 20, others at 50, etc. Some want 100 points to build, some want over 9000. Even now we have a slew of players that choose not to restrict themsleves, but demand that the code do the restricting. Like a DM in a PnP game saying yes or no. If you play any game just to see moar, bigger numbers and Win, then we play games for entirely different reasons. :) I pick the powers that are right for the character concepts, etc., not numbers. In CoH, _any_ character combo can be made to break the game IME. But, in the original Apha, CoH was meant to be more free form, pick a primary and secondary. IMO, it's the very best way to play, it's the most fun. The rules-lawyers and nit-pickers need to understand that when I advocate for chnages of this kind, I am not trying to break anything or create min-maxed gods to make them feel bad about choosing another combo. _Of course_ to make free form choices work, additional work would have to be done to the game to make it enjoyable. It is so funny to throw out these ideas and see people lose thier minds assuming only the worst possible scenario. :) i know you keed, mostly. :)
  14. Not missing that point at all, I just know how those things work, been in litigation, I deal with corporate lawyers in the real world. C&D shows up, they roll over, done, no money has to be exchanged unless they want to fight it. Cannot get blood from a turnip as the saying goes. CoH cannot die, the code is out. So, sure, if one of the community server-runners gets loose on thier money, they might have an issue. So far, the runners are smart enough to have LLCs and such to prevent/minimize personal losses. Not a silver bullet, but shows the right intent, which is what laws and rulings are based on generally. I simply do not have a fatalistic view of these things. Fear, concern, thoughts, whatever word you like, I am not concerned in the least, IMO, it's a waste of energy for me. 'Bad things' will happen or they won't, and if they do, the game will not dissappear, just the foolish people tried to make money with things they don't own. With all this data at hand, why spend time being concerned/worried. I get that people want to discuss. I still see 'vague feelings of losing CoH' causing people to find fatalistic scenarios that are highly improbable at the least, and none of them can put the genie back in the bottle.
  15. A GM said on Homecoming that someone has 277 on one server already.
  16. And I come at this with the PoV that saying, "The hell with it, anything goes," might not be a great idea. If you keep adding new options that are head and shoulders above the things that are currently there, the question rapidly arises, why would a rational actor ever choose the original choices? If the only answers one can make are "flavor" or "nostalgia", something has gone a little wrong. I am waiting for a server with the original CoH idea to pop up - 'choose 2' - just choose two powersets, out of all of them, and go! Creativity and fun beat out 'must have best DPS - srs bness' everytime for me. With community servers and mods will come all kinds of wild changes. I am already hyped for all the wild things people will add. Flavor and fun are all that matter to me, rules-lawyering and nit-picking over the little details is boring. Play what you like on the server (version) you like, everyone wins. There are i24 servers already up and running for those that prefer the more 'currated' experience, we all win, IMO.
  17. Eh. Private server and all, mistakes happen, etc. IMO, don't sweat the details, just play. :)
  18. I have not seen any hard data on the testing and balance of the 'non-original' powersets. I have heard a couple combos, like MM /Rad, are very potent and that Bio Armor might be really good. In the end, on Live, we could 'break the game' with any AT already, so I am not really worried about some of the new powers not being perfectly balanced. I come at this with the PoV as well that Thor and Hawkeye are not balanced, why do all characters have to be? :)
  19. At what level can you do this? 1 AFAIK.
  20. Great. So: • New Powersets Bio Armor for Brutes, Tankers, Scrappers and Stalkers Sorcery Power Pool Psionic Melee for Brutes, Tankers, Scrappers and Stalkers Savage Melee for Brutes, Tankers, Scrappers and Stalkers Radiation Melee for Brutes, Tankers, Scrappers and Stalkers Radiation Armor for Brutes, Tankers, Scrappers and Stalkers Wind Control for Controllers and Dominators Experimentation Power Pool Force of Will Power Pool Gadgetry Power Pool Utility Power Pool These powersets were not tested very much? Or were they ready for release? Tested by whom, when? These things have been added over the last 6 years by the people that had the code. One assumes that in that 6 years, people played them, so they have been tested. What else is it you are looking for? Some kind of 'authority' to tell you they are 'allowed' or what? :)
  21. So why would this? This is that '10%', IMO, and is not for profit. Still sounds like just general fear of Disney lawyers to me. Even IF Disney speaks up, the only thing that would happen is the server-runners would get a list of banned names - the costumes cannot be touched on their own, because of how trademarks work, it _has_ to be the 'whole thing' and they have to prove that people are mistaking thier products with others, diluting thier IP and causing a financial impact. IMO, fearing this is like fearing you will get sued if your neighbors here your music and call it illegal broadcasting ... Sure, anything is possible. I prefer to make choices based on things that are far less fuzzy than 'some evil lawyers might come get us, so stop having fun'.
  22. I have a DP/WP waiting in the wings, however, you just may have convinced me to try a new Gunkata combo. Most fun I have had - hated to play Blasters on live, was really looking forward to the changes on test, I love this combo.
  23. It's why I am not rebuilding, but re-imagining and making new characters.
  24. The Disney and daycare thing I knew about previously and can find references with details, most of which are very black and white about making money off of the images. I cannot find anything about a 12 y/o girl on YouTube, reference? Re-broadcasting and music have all sorts of restrictions. I am still not seeing a clear path here beyond, "They have done wild and crazy things in the past." If that's all we are going to go on, then I can come up with all kinds of wild scenarios! :) Also tried to sue a 12 year old girl for multiple millions of dollars in the early days of YouTube for having one of the songs from Lion King soundtrack playing in the back ground of her VLOG video IIRC. Something stupid like that anyway.
