In terms of the current gamers playing online games, this is an odd time for CoH to return. IMO, in many ways, the game is simply not built for the 'current' muli-player gamer. Thus, a ton of people, both that have and have not played CoX, perhaps, IMO, think they should play this game the same way those other games (with not much real content other than cosmetics) - running to max level then 'hanging out' to show off the cosmetics they 'earned', since the 'new carrot' is fashion in many games. CoX did not have much in the way of fashion carrots, and what was there has been given to all. So now, these players rush to 50, just to hang out with 50s, with fashion we can make at level 1. Fine by me, they take up fewer map server instances. :) Addtionally, IMO, people assume this game is like others in that you have a 'main' that needs all the time, when this game is built for making many characters, all of which can get to 50 pretty easily. Because of this assumtion and the difficulty other games have around changing thing later, many players assume decisions here are set in stone when that is not the case, IMO. IMO, the _real game_ for long term players is the joy of building new ideas, coupled with 'breaking the game' with specific fun, mathematically supreme characters. Right now, IMO, we have a bunch of people showing up thinking this is like some old MMO where they need to run to 50 to 'catch up' with the 'old timers' and then expecting new content added...yeah...

Can this be the first thing people see on the forums, please? :)

OK, I'll make it easy. You are Right, I am Wrong, how terrible of me not to see that so plainly. Later! :)

Totally get the point of the the thread, personally agree. Done my share of DFB over the last couple weeks, but also done lots of other things, DFB gets boring. Thing is, you cannot really change the lemmings. Sure, posts like this will spark a few to look around, I agree, but it a little like yelling into a hurricane. Even way back when, much less now in the MMO world, the idea of racing to max level to 'get to the good stuff' and to be seen as 'worthy' was already deeply ingrained. Some play for the content, others play to be with friends, still others play just to level and get the dopamine hit on dings. The people involved can decide to change how they play and choose to not be swayed by peer pressure and the race to 50, or they can remain lemmings. It is a personal choice, but one that, IME, is really tough for most, because peer pressure is a killer for most people. Extroverts want to be around everyone else and Introverts just want to quietly get a group and not rock the boat. Again, no different than any other MMO I have encountered. It's kind of like watching someone devour delious, hand made food like it's a race, over savorying it - to some, food is just fuel, in any form, to others it is art to be slowly, lovingly consumed. How many McDs vs Fine Cuisine places to go are there again? :)

So many server ideas, so few server resources...the story of my life (literally).

Not heard 'lambasting' in a while, good one. And yes, say it's not so, I am just like other people! The humanity! I am very happy that those who want to go backwards are at least a posting minority here in this thread. So what? I have intentionally ignored no facts that I have seen, does not mean my delusion inteprets them the same as others though. The fact is, there are plenty of people that would roll back the code to get Villians and Heroes 'where they should be' and put restrictions back on Capes and Auras - I have two groups over the weekend clamouring for just that in-game. Just because the majority on posting on this thread like the changes does not mean the effort to rollback is not real. At least one server online right now plans to rollback characters to i24 when they rollback the server. My 'unwarranted emotional responce" - thanks for dissing my emotions - is based on a life of being creatively resticted by people who 'just cannot understand' and avoid change out of FUD. I am really, really tired of people that cannot keep up slowing me down, rather than moving out of the way. When other humans even voice considerations on stiffling creativity, my 'unwarranted emotions' run on high, thus my posting. The ignore function is a thing if my prose offends.

Okay... I TOTALLY read that as "free porn power choices", and my mind went completely nuts... for about 20 seconds. Now that does sound like my kind of server!

Duh? 'Please don't start" is what I typed. :) The OP said they like it the old way, I made my plea. :)

Let's see what the server landscape looks like in a year. The code is out, the ability run a server exists for anyone, and there are code geeks already making modifications. IMO, the Homecomming servers, because of the people and population involved, will probably be the most pragmatic and attempt to be the most 'original' - there is a huge push even in-game on teams to move backward to i24, for example. IMO, there will be other servers popping up with even fewer restrictions, higher XP, modded content, etc. that will be deemed 'unworthy' by many 'old school' players - already seen this in-game and in forums over 'too much XP'. IMO, I think we will see servers that do things no one here has contemplated for some time - free form power choices anyone? Sounds delicious. Like many others, this game is no longer under the control of any one entity and it is going to be great to see all the snowflakes get created, IMO. So, SCoRE opened the box, but there is no putting the code back in it and Homecomming does not actually have a monopoly, just an early lead with long-time fans though the secret server and Titan. I don't really care who did what at this point, drama-wise. There are personalities around this thing I have never trusted, never will, who I am sure do not like me at all. Doesn't matter, we have the code.

Then please pick the powers when you think they are appropriate and you have 'worked' enough for them, please don't start asking for thinsg to move backwards. Thanks.

That's, like, your opinion man. Yeah, and? I said it was my Opinion. All of we post here is our interpretation of the facts we have been presented - our opinions based on our own personal delusions. Duh. It is also my opinion that the current class availability in what is called i25 is great, I don't want it changed, and I don't want people who think they know how I should have fun to dictate code restrictions on servers. Since anyone can now run a server, they can grab the code and build whatever they like. If there are enough restriction-lovers, then they will come and play. I realize there are those who clamour for things to be 'just like they were at live sunset'. They have what they need to build what they want, they are welcome to to so. That level of nostalgia, IMO, is not for me.

Why? This is not Paragon. There is no claim of copyright, as there was in the retail game. These are fan run, fan played. I can show up at a gaming convention dressed like Supes. This is just an online virtual gaming convention, not a retail product or service. Please show me a valid law that can be applied here and I will back off, but until then, this is just FUD by people that do not understand copyright. The reason Marvel could even try to sue previously was because the game publisher, though ToS and EULA, claimed copyright on all creeations. NCSoft, Homecoming, no one is doing that here.

All expected. Many of us are hopeful 'mods' and 'fixes' of this nature will be picked up by the 'masses'. :)

Can we lift the name restrictions already?

I'll just add here that when the server was under full retail control with funding, they could not solve this 'human' problem. It is a human problem of perception and reality, the adding of 'value' to names. No action or inaction by this team or any team running a CoH server at this point will be able to keep the whole playerbase happy on this topic. Even _if_ someone spend what looks like a ton of time changing this in the code, implementing will have both sides screaming. I for one think we should not be pushing the server hosts about this topic at all, as they are volunteers, we know this is deep in the code, and is simply not a big enough fish to fry right now, IMO - just play the game. My pennies. -
Um, OK, but, why? Just for people to have something to show off to the 'lessers'? I just do not understand why people have to have something 'written in code' here. If they want to add things as their character progresses, they can do that. What is the point of restricting things in code like this other than to give people access to an e-peen variable? Why do people have this need to show others they are 'better' and 'been through more' content?
-
This was my experience for years on live. The breaking of the need for the 'trinity' on CoH is one of it's best attributes, IMO. Play how you like, I'll even carry your 'healer'. I won't even put anyone needing/being a 'healer' on ignore, in hopes they learn. But given the chance, I prefer to have a productive team member over a 'healer'. :)
-
I understand. They are nice. I still don't bother until way later, unless I happen to own them. :) IMO, characters in CoH have long been fun _because_ until way later, there is no real need for them. We can share merits between chracters, which changes things a bit too. I think many of us just wanted you to know it's not a carrot that you have to chase very hard...
-
Sweet, sweeeet, suffering... Yeah, there are some tricks and as you learn them, awesome appears. I think we have a few people still thinking they will have 'just this one main character and no more", or that all descions are set in stone... Boy are they wrong. ;)
-
I think mods and modded/enriched servers will be popping up for some time. The code is now in the hands of many passionate people, we will all be able to enjoy thier labor, but it will take a little time.
-
Just use commons! No need for sets until much later in the game, unless there is a very specific something like KB/KN you might want to get. IMO, it's just a waste to do more than plain IOs, and upgrade here and there, until way later. On this version, it will be easier to move them around, but still. Just my pennies.
-
Did this on live for (too?) many characters once it became available. Build/Buy plain old IOs (mostly) and fill up the slots as you get them. Start at 22, when you get to 27, use 30's if you like/have/find, etc., until you hit 40-ish and both understand the character and know if it's worth investing any more resources into...several hit this stage (or earlier) and flounder, pouring resources into the next experiment, etc., until you find a goood one, by then you have lots of resources to really trick out 'the one' you like...until you roll the next one...

Seconded. Having run live servers for biz and consumers for years, ths Homecoming team has been doing a great job from my PoV. That downtime was only about 1.5 hours, very smooth! Your dedication to the community does not go unnoticed.

New Powersets or Powerset Customization
jubakumbi replied to titanium87's topic in General Discussion
Load up your own server. With full admin power, you can assign any power to any character.
