Looking for /Rad advice, or even a build.

I'm a long-time player of kinetics and radiation defenders and love them.  I wanted to explore the viability of these secondaries on a mastermind.  Folks have talked about kinetics, and I get the impression that it makes wonderfully violent pets that don't survive very well.  I can grasp that.

But I'm wondering about /radiation, too.  My rad/ sonic defender can solo just about anything in the game (though very slowly).  I wondered if I could make an effective mastermind using a similar strategy.

Unfortunately, my hero planner crashes when I even make the attempt.  It will not load the Radiation set for masterminds.  I looked online and saw that people used to have this problem, but everyone says it's fixed now.  So I tried to download the latest version of pines.  My version insists that it IS, in fact, the latest version.  No new updates available.  So I installed mids reborn.  Upon starting, it covers my screen with error messages that will not go away.  AGAIN, on the forums, people say this used to be a problem, but it's fixed now.  AGAIN I tried to get the latest version, only to be told that I already have it.

I'm not a computer expert.  I can barely turn my computer on without help.  I just want to look at the viability of these builds.  And I'm frustrated to the point of distraction now.

Maybe someone can talk about /radiation at level 50, fully slotted.  How does it perform?  Can it solo well?  Does anyone have a good build to share?  If it doesn't work well, I won't keep pursuing it.

Everyone swears by /time, and I know /time is effective (at least for a defender, it is), but I find it clunky and unpleasant to manage.  It's just not very compatible with my play-style.  I'm really hoping for a viable strategy that uses one of the sets I already love.  If this isn't possible, I will adapt and overcome.

I'm going with the standard build I do normally and break out from there.

Radiation is like dark I see so unless you can defense cap you will be relying on your toggles and anchor to keep you at defense cap.

ATM right from the start I am thinking Range defense cap, Smash and Lethal defense cap and then mid 20s with Melee and AOE defenses and use Radiation infection to get you to get you to Melee and AOE defense cap.

Not crazy about EMP Pulse and the crash. I am thinking power boost instead.

Will look at this some more.  But its a start

I really enjoyed my Rad\Rad defender back on live and I never created a Beast MM.    So I have a lvl 47 Beast\Rad.

Solo is not an issue at all.    Once I have the boss pinned with the Rad toggles it makes it easy.

I finally was able to slot my 50s so I am still pushing up how high I can go in missions.

Here is what I am shooting for,   I have the purples and MM sets,   they are not able to be slotted yet for me,

Thanks for fast and helpful responses.  On some of the AT forums, you get ignored for days, then abused, then ignored some more.  Who'd have thought such a naughty AT would have such a pleasant community?

I'll create a /rad MM this very day and see how it goes!

Anyone have any other strategies or build ideas?

Just wanted to say I find this aoe pulsing hold to be a useful form of damage mitigation, as you can pretty much ignore minions while focusing down bosses and LTs. I don’t run more than -1x1 because I’m more focused on merits, but most times I don’t even need to debuff, just let the choking cloud do its thing.

I appreciate that advice.  I've never taken Choking Cloud before, but I will this time to see how it performs!  In my own sketched-out build, which is a close mash-up of the above offering, I still have two powers I can pick that I'm not totally married to.  I'll use Choking Cloud for one of them.

I'm on a mission.  I hear so much about how well /time performs to make your minions unkillable.  I like unkillable.  But as I said before, I don't enjoy running with /time.  I'm hoping (desperately) that I can do just as well with /rad.  Because I think /rad is so much fun... and it turns AVs and monsters into paste and asks so little in return.

I'm running through an initial toon (sort of a test-toon) right now: necro/ rad.  He's only 30 so far.  He's soloed all the Task Force Commander TFs but the final two (about to do Manticore today) and my, is he beastly.  I know that this doesn't really say anything about the challenges of the end-game--they're very different.  I know that.  But I'll get to those things, too, in time.  If they defeat me, they defeat me, and this will be a learning experience.

What I really want is a great bots/ toon.  I've always thought bots were the coolest.  If I can do well in the end game with this necro/ toon, I'll make a bots/ rad and (hopefully) love him, cherish him, put him on my page 1 with all my 50s I actually like and want to keep playing.  That's my goal.

Here's my concept build for a Mortician: necro/rad!  Not only does he raise the dead to serve him as pets; he calls allies to him with recall friend and then casts vengeance, fallout, mutation!

He's just shy of soft-cap to S/L, but with radiation infection, gloom, life drain, and all the -tohit generated by the pets you are essentially softcapped to much more than just S/L.  The defense is backed by moderate resists, and heals from radiant aura and life drain (which some pets also have).  The pets also have +10 defense to all (+25 to AoE) and +25 resist to all from the pet proc IOs, which goes on top of their inherent armor.

While Bots are better AV and GM killers this build can also solo AVs and GMs.

That build looks beautiful.

I notice you did NOT go with choking cloud.  Do you not feel that it's an effective enough controller for lesser bad-guys?

I also see that you took Mutation and Fallout, neither of which work with your pets.  Are they meant to make you more  useful for groups?

I'm generally not a fan of choking cloud UNLESS it's paired with another aura, like hot feet for example.  Other people love it, especially with the Lockdown +2 hold proc.  And yes, recall friend/mutation/fallout/vengeance is part of this build's gimmick as a "mortician" or a necromancer.  You could certainly switch those out to go in a different direction and you should if you intend to solo all the time or play in teams where no one ever dies.  But in PUG groups, it's an amazing combination that can turn an almost team-wipe into a curb stomp.  Fallout does amazing damage AND is an insane debuff (-20 def, -50 res, -30 tohit, and -30 dam).  That combined with the buffs from vengeance, which also benefit your pets, and even the dead ally gets a boost from the mutation rez, makes for some fun times.

I’m surprised you’re finding AVs so easy on your/rad; my necro/rad had to get the envenomed daggers temp power to take down the clockwork king, though I didn’t have any of the pet aura IOs and everything wasn’t fully slotted yet, so that might have made the difference.

Dr. Vahz in Posi 2 gave me the most trouble.  I was exemplared to 16 for that one, of course, so that didn't help--two little minions and one medium was all I got.  When all the additional mobs arrived, I eventually had to back off and heal up.  But when I did, the little mobs followed me and he didn't.  So my guys killed them, then I came back, found him alone, and dropped him.

And Vandal (was that Citadel's TF?  I think it was Citadel) stunned me and dropped my toggles at one point, and by the time I had my debuffs up again he had ALMOST killed me, and he'd killed most of the pets.  But I was able to recover and get him.

The clockwork king was the easiest of all--he gave me no trouble I could remember, except at low health he started running around, which was annoying.

I didn't get to Manticore today, but if I remember right, you have to kill an AV, then you have to kill that one a second time and another one with him.  And Numina's end-boss is Jurassic, a monster, which should be much harder.  Those will be more interesting tests, for sure.

Main thing I'd give for advice is don't bother trying to hit 45% Defense values.

With a slotted Rad Infection you'll hose their chance to hit, meaning you can get by with lower Defense.  I wound up with 33% S/L and 26% Energy without even trying.  That should be enough in most circumstances.

Nemesis Vengeance stacking will suck regardless.

I built this with that lower Defense target in mind; main thing it does is perma Lingering Rad and Accelerate Metabolism.  Didn't take Hasten for this, as I can now autofire Clarion instead.

I also left out Call Ravens, as it drew a bit too much hate.  Rad works best when things aren't targeting you with mez.  If you get mezzed, your debuff toggles drop and you die.  Hence why I went with Clarion.

The Endurance values in Mids are bugged for some reason, but with perma AM going you shouldn't be out of breath too often.

I finally decided on this for my Beast/ cuz I wanted to hunt AVs/GMs, and Rad tends to do that better than any other secondary.  Beasts can kick out serious proc damage against a single target, and the Wolves keep Achilles' up nearly all the time.

My pet slotting is optimal DPS for Beasts, but I'm sure you can do something similar with Demons.
