Hey there, friends -

I really appreciate all the help with the Therm/Sonic build, and while I'm currently leveling it, I may have found a toon that I enjoy even more. I promise I won't squander everyone's help in the other build, I definitely plan to level it up and IO it up, but I may finish this new toon first.

It's Cold/Dark.

I realize it's not min/max, as I'm not going Sonic, but I'm enjoying it so much!

Would love any/all input!

Couple things to mention.

My priorities are:

1) Support First -- whatever I can do to augment to offense and defense of my team because I never, EVER solo

2) Tankability -- I want to be as tanky as the build will allow

3) Damage -- Might as well, right?

Hoping for perma hasten and HL, which shouldn't be too hard, though I am not perma on the build just yet.

Thinking about potentially dropping Infrig for CJ to get tankier, but let me know what you think....

Hope everyone is having a wonderful New Year!

On my phone, can't look at the build atm, but I'm quite sure that can be a potent build that'll help teams dismantle anything up to and including AVs and GMs

That's what I'm hoping for, too.

When I'm back home I can post it into the thread properly without an attachment.

I just had a look at the build. I think it's looking really good overall. Good job.

One thing I wasn't sure of is which Alpha slot you're going after. That will affect the build a lot.

As for the Dark APP, it's not a bad choice. Like the Thermal build we talked about a few days ago, though, I'd be highly motivated to see if I could make on the Villain APPs to increase your strength. In this case, I'd be looking at the Soul Mastery APP. It has this structure:

image.png.425460bf7afa7423ea14b3540fa6af4b.png

So you'd actually end up with the same armor power without having to take Oppressive Gloom, a power you probably wouldn't get much use out of. You'd still get Soul Drain out of it, but pick up the Mistress pet and Power Boost.

In this case, Power Boost won't make your shields better. That's a limitation of Cold Domination's shields (it has to do with enhanceable resistance in the shields). What it will do is make your -ToHit skyhigh. It's glorious in your nuke power. Glorious:

image.thumb.png.8968d6418678ab7e453ea8daaa6f904f.png

That's with NO -ToHit slotted in the power. -124% ToHit means even +4 enemies have -59.52 chance to hit. That is, even up to the incarnate soft cap. This -ToHit lasts 20 seconds and stacks with your other sources of -ToHit.

Overall I think this will be a very satisfying, strong support character.

Here's some possible edits to the build. This assumes the Spiritual Alpha slot is selected for the extra Recharge. I think that suits this particular build style well.

No Super Speed, but with Arctic Fog +Sprint you're invisible anyway. You can use Sprint with Ninja Leap with no worries. The knock protection comes from x3 Gladiator's Armor.

BTW something I forgot is the recharge on Soul Drain in the Soul pool is x2 longer than the one in the Dark Mastery APP. I think it's worth the tradeoff for the pet (who you can shield) and Power Boost.

Eating one Purple inspiration would soft cap this build to all positions and damage types.

This is a 50 build, I would skip dark pit and take tactics instead for leveling. The idea behind dark pit is to stack it with oppressive gloom to keep even bosses stunned, this is dangerous for your HP (should be easy with life drain), but also hilarious so I kept it. Dark pit and oppressive gloom should also occasionally immobilize lesser enemies, which is also hilarious. This has perma hasten and heat loss is 5 seconds away, but while leveling I would put two rech red. in both hasten and heat loss. Other than that capped melee and range def, s/l res almost capped, perma soul drain, and 192.5% global recharge. I personally like water blast to pair with cold as it makes up for the lack of a heal while retaining AOE, but dark has life drain so you should be ok.

That is a very sweet build Darkir, about the only thing I'd really want is perma Heat Loss but not sure where I scrounge up the slot without hurting things.

Take the annihilation proc from sleet if you simply must have perma heat loss.

🙂

Edit: the proc won't go off much anyway, so you really aren't losing much.

At first glance this looks AWESOME -- The only change I would make, myself, without being able to see the full build as I'm at work... is swapping Torrent for Assault. I think Torrent is super meh, and don't feel like it's needed in my attack chain. At least if I pick up assault, I can provide some general-wide damage and gain back 4 slots back to put into Tactics for a full Gaussian set.

What you think?

Super interesting take on the build!

Mind if I ask about the Boxing slotting? I've seen, in several scenarios, people slot the heck out of Boxing (or brawl) to achieve certain set bonuses, but it seems like such a "feelsbadman" to have to spend so many slots on a power I never use.

Are the bonuses that important? Are there different ways to achieve it?

Genuinely curious.

Genuinely curious.

So, the slotting of boxing is to get the extra 3.13% ranged def AND the 6.25% recharge which allows the build to perma hasten with only one +5 rech redux. The build never uses boxing and I could put the set into dark pit, but then I'd have a chance of knocking enemies out of the pit...which would be super lame. This way dark pit and oppressive gloom should both stun and occasionally immobilize. There are many other ways to get the extra ranged defense, but none that I found while also keeping the amount of recharge in the build while retaining dark pit and oppressive gloom.

Now getting hit 8% of the time compared to 5% of the time doesn't sound like much, but that's actually a 40% damage difference. In actual play the difference between an almost softcapped character and one that is 3-5% short is very noticeable.

In an ATO and IO world it is often preferable to slot powers you don't use for set bonuses when min/maxing a toon. However, I only spent a little more than an hour on this and so there may be more you can find that I missed (I spend a little more time futzing with things on builds that I find amusing or enjoyable and dark pit+oppressive gloom made me giggle). 😁

A great deal of just how bad depends on the character.  Something like /SR with its typical levels of defdebuff resistance being a point shy, while not ideal,  isn't a looming disaster.  But on your typical squishy support AT it is a defeat waiting to happen.  The first debuffing hit lands and drops your defense from 44 to 34 (or worse). This  makes the next hit substantially more likely and suddenly you're hit several more times and your capped defenses have vanished in a 'cascade failure.'  On a character with significant ddr like SR it's less hazardous because that same debuff drops your defense from 44 to 43.5 a slight uptick in damage and your foes have to continue to be very lucky to land further hits because your defense remains fairly static.  You'll be dead from the blows before your defenses are really eroded.

Now think about a character with defenses at 47 or 48 and think about what that first lucky hit means with and without ddr.

I've been torn on this build for the past few days. I really like both approaches, but something still feels off. I'm going to try retooling it a bit myself, with some inspiration from both Darkir and Oedipus.

Appreciate you all so much -- which I could give more detail to what is bugging me with the build, but I'm not entirely sure yet.

For starters, I think I'm convinced in switching to Mace for Scorp Shield. Whether I go all in and grab web+pet is TBD. Scorp shield, although boring, is too important to give up. Being able to soft cap defenses much easier is important to me as I want to be as tanky as possible.

Oppressive Gloom, while fun, is super weak right? Like a suspiciously low Mag 2 compared to base ST holds of Mag 3....

Soul Drain is amaaaazing, but damage is least important to me... I also don't think this toon is really going to put out much damage.

I was thinking about how to stay at range a bit more to compliment my cones, but I realize that with HL and Blackstar I have to be in melee at least once a minute anyways.

Also I definitely will be dropping Infrigidate in my final build... and I don't need a travel power. Ninja Run might as well be one, it's simply so good for free. Giving me access to vengeance or assault or anything else.

Just speaking out loud.

The reason I recommended a tertiary app with Power Boost is that Power Boost contains a multiplier for -ToHit that makes Dark Blast uber.

Here are the non-Power Boosted and Power Boosted values for Dark Blast against +0 and (in paren) +4 enemies:

Dark Blast, Gloom, Moonbeam, Tentacles, Night Fall, Torrent, Life Drain

-9.38  (-4.50)         -18.59 (-8.9)

Blackstar:

-62.5   (-30)          -124.0 (-59.52)

Power Boost almost lets you ignore the level difference between +0 and +4 enemies in terms of your debuffs.

Power Boost is so effective in -ToHit powers because ToHit (along with Defense) takes Schedule B enhancements. These enhancements only increase +ToHit modestly. But Power Boost close to doubles them. As you can see from the values, Power Boosted Blackstar will bottom out the Defense of all enemies even in incarnate trials. Slotting-ToHit in the power doesn't bring it nearly as close.

A downside for you is Power Boost won't increase the effectiveness of your shields. It will multiply the endurance you get from Heat Loss though, multiply how much Life Drain heals you, and just generally make life easier.

I would definitely pass on S/L defense armor for that. -ToHit isn't exactly the same as +Defense, because it can miss. But Power Boost + Dark Blast pairs soooo well that I'd be loathe to give it up.
