Thermal/? suggestions

Doc Ranger

Recommended Posts

So I was planning on starting a Thermal having never played the set before. Any suggestions besides /Sonic to pair with it that would synergize well?

I play a lot of controllers as well so if there is a better synergy with a control primary then I'd be open to that as well. Basically looking forward to trying Thermal.

Hmmmmm, you could try dark blast. It doesn't really synergize with thermal, but I don't think anything does really. Dark blast would allow you to further protect your team though with -tohit and that combined with your +res shields would make your team very tanky.

I have a mid-level thermal/AR and one thing I've noticed--not a synergy, but maybe worth considering. You're handing out nice buffs to your team and have solid debuffs but little of that does a whole lot for you. So on teams I have to be a little more careful about what kind of aggro I'm pulling. Going all Flamethrower/Full Auto/Buckshot on a spawn that isn't tightly tied to a tank can be a bit fatal. So consider a set that's a little more single target focused than AoE focused, maybe thermal/beam or thermal/ice.

Beam has been on my radar for awhile as a set I haven’t tried but want to. Mostly single target?

Not sure that's the general opinion. IMO, you get cutting beam as an AoE fairly early but it's kinda not good. Roughly the same damage and arc as buckshot but the cast time is twice as long for that damage and longer recharge. But that's your basic AoE attack until level 35.  Very good single target damage and lots of interesting debuffs.

BR is not an AoE powerhouse but has a ranged nuke you will actually use as a Defender, so it's not as bad as it looks at first glance.

Because Cutting Beam, the AoE, does -Defense, you can slip a -Resist proc in there.

Sonic Attack gets a lot of rave reviews for Defenders but Beam Rifle isn't that far behind it in debuffing potential, with a different flavor nuke, and much less annoying sound effects. 😄

I tend to think of thermal as a better primary for defenders than secondary for controllers. It's quite a busy set with buffs, debuffs and heals which would conflict with another full time set. That said it might pair well with a hands off control set - ice perhaps?

A much underrated combo IMO is Illusion Control/Thermal Radiation. People tend to overlook it because it's not an obvious synergy right away. But Thermal actually has both -Resist and -Regen, and while not quite as much of it as /Cold, its still there. You don't need to worry about healing your Army pets at all, so that frees you up to manage Thermal's various buffs.

Nothing just obviously skippable in thermal. Some pass on thaw because they're busy enough. Some on the rez, power of the phoenix because you can mostly duplicate it with day jobs. Dark Pit (low accuracy mag 2 stun?) and torrent (tiny damage knockback?) are commonly skipped in dark blast. Life Drain is optional with the thermal primary if you can chain your other single target attacks well enough.

I finally decided on Thermal/Dark. Big fan of Dark on the Controller side of things so why not try Dark blast for the first time.

Any skippable powers in either set or builds floating around?

I did a thing!

Edit: I made some mistakes the first time I posted this. This should be better. Also, I should note that this is built around the idea that you will need to be self sufficient and not ely on anyone else in the team (while still providing your team with buffs....you're selfish selfish team...). You could get a lot more recharge, -tohit, and procs out of an S/L/E build using Mace Mastery. In order to get to the M/R def softcap, you need to make sacrifices. Mace Mastery is probably the way to go really. I'll post a different build with that in mind later tonight.

Noice...So skip Dark Pit. How is Gloom and Nightfall? Is Torrent terrible even with a KB/KD?

Torrent has some of the worst dps of any cone I know of and its only a 30 degree arc...its bad and whoever made it should feel bad. Then you also add knockbacl to it so there is a kb to kd IO tax too...boo Torrent! BOO!!

Dark pit is only good if you can stack it with another stunning power so that bosses and lieutenants also get stunned. You could make some changes and take dark pit and then switch out dark consumption for oppressive gloom. That way everything gets stunned and I personally think its hilarious and super fun to do. This would be incredibly easy to incorporate both of those things if we weren't trying to get R/M softcapped, its a bit harder to do on thermal as it offers no help in the set itself. Now if you will always be teaming and can count on having even one 4-5% maneuvers coming from somewhere else, I will redo the build with that in mind and take dark pit and oppressive gloom.

I was just curious about the power having never used it.

I will definitely always be teaming...I might drop Leadership (but keep Fighting). I may also take Soul for the Power Boost (seems to work on my Time/Sonic) and Dark Embrace.

The leadership powers on a defender are so good (especially on a team) that it is almost criminal not to take them. Maneuvers gives your whole team 5.5% defense to all without you needing to ever reapply it. Tactics is the same thing, but providing 19% tohit (with an alpha, not sure its like 16-17 without it, but thats still great). Those two things are huge, especially while leveling up.

Power Boost is incredible good on time because it applies to farsights defense and tohit. Unfortunately, power boost does not apply to your res shields or your +dmg buffs. Power Boost does apply to the -tohit portion of your dark powers, but they are already so good on a defender that I don't think its worth it (blackstar already applies a -62.5% tohit debuff, that is enough to floor damn near everything. I see no need to go up to 100+ -tohit).

With you mostly teaming and power boost not really helping you, I thought I'd try going the Mace Shield route. The advantages to this build are that you have a lot more global recharge and you have a very nice 'Oh shit' button in the way of rune of protection. Most of the time I like to use rune of protection as a break free, but it also seriously buffs your resists. The downside of this build is you have less resistance overall when rune of protection is down and you are not good against damage types that are not s/l/e.

That seems like underslotting of Thermal Shield-- it's your best team buff and you're only increasing the resistance of that shield by 16%?

Can Melt Armor do the regular damage resistance debuff and ALSO the achilles heel resistance debuff? Haven't tried it, curious.

For any Dark Blast build I always feel a strong pull toward Soul Mastery for Power Boost. Power Boosted Blackstar is just stupid good. The base -ToHit of Power Boosted Blackstar with no IOs at all is -124% ToHit for 20 seconds. That works out to -59.52% ToHit against +4 enemies. The incarnate soft cap is 59. So, Power Boosted Blackstar will basically soft cap any teammate to all positions for 20 seconds for against each enemy you hit with Blackstar in almost any content you encounter.

Here is my first draft at this build. Going to start playing and see what happens. Any critique is welcome.

Looks good to me-- small comment, if you're going to take dark embrace you may be overslotting your shields, at least if you're chasing the 3% s/l resistance bonus with the 4th slot of titanium coating. You're over your resistance cap.  Should be very survivable. Defense is high enough that almost anything hit once by a dark blast power will nearly have its tohit floored, and after two hits it all will.

Noice...So skip Dark Pit. How is Gloom and Nightfall? Is Torrent terrible even with a KB/KD?

Torrent could be pretty viable with just two slots. KB/KD IO and Force Feedback +recharge proc. I could see it having a lot of potential on a Thermal/Dark/Dark build. The extra recharge would be great for Forge, Heat Exhaustion, Melt Armor and Soul Drain. Not only that but the KD effect would be great for damage mitigation and the power also debuffs to-hit. I would definitely try finding room for it and pairing it with Tenebrous Tentacles.

Since damage isn’t a Defenders strong suit I think you’d find more utility out of Torrent than Night Fall. You could even throw 4 procs in there to have a mini shotgun cone that also buffs you.
